5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Lens

    F.D. · August 16, 2021

I got this lens after trying the Tamron 20mm 2.8 1:2 which while was nice lens wasnt as sharp as I'd like and a bit too wider than I liked. After looking at the reviews I decided to pay the difference and upgrade to the Samyang 24mm F1.8. This lens is outstanding my biggest hesitation was the autofocus because while Samyang is known for excellent optics they are still working out the kinks with the autofocus. I'm glad to say that this is excellent, I'm sure my Sony 85 f1.8 is technically faster but I can't tell. Distortion is pretty well handled which was another knock on the Tamron 20mm f2.8 1:2. I also love the added button which I use to switch to APS-c mode which give me 36mm at about 19MP on my A7R3, I also used the Lens Dock to change the switch to AF/MF this makes the lens more convient to use and definitely adds value. My one gripe is that there isn't a lens profile for the lens yet in Lightroom, but hopefully it comes soon.If you're looking for a sharp excellent focusing, feature packed wide angle prime this is it. There isn't anything else even close in the price range. Ofcourse I'm sure the Sony 24mm f1.4GM is superior but for my budget and the fact that I'm just a hobbyist I'll save $900.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I hate about this lens.....

    J.C.C. · April 22, 2022

I have had this lens for about two months now and recently put it through its paces on a trip to Portugal where I thought it would be almost exclusively used for interior architectural and late evening shooting. Actually, I found I really liked the 24mm length for just walking about as well. When paired with my A7C, this was a nicely balanced and very capable lens. Images were crisp and I found the subject isolation very pleasing at 1.8. Low light performance, including focusing, was simply stellar. I would say this lens is very hard to beat as a compliment to a mid range zoom such as the kit lens or a Tampon 28-75.Now for the bad...Honestly, the sharpness of this lens has become a burr under my skin as I can no longer be totally happy with the images from a zoom. Dammitt!!!! Even the wonderfully sharp 28-60 leaves a little to be desired, but this is the limitation of these zooms. I recently picked up the Tamron 28-200 and found it very disappointing in its resolution at 28mm. I think it will be going back today as a result. So, I think I will now be picking up another Samyang prime. Probably the 75 or 85.So, be warned.... This may be the lens that converts you to a prime lens shooter.

Auto focus is great. sharpness is great edge to edge even wide open. color neutral. Light weight and good astro chops. Best 24mm for the buck. Can't find a weakness to this lens.

1.0 out of 5 stars Samyang 24mm 1.8 vs Sony 20mm 1.8. Reduced to 2 star. Major flaw. Now broken.

    O.V. · November 7, 2021

Just got a 24mm 1.8 Samyang lens to replace my Sony 20mm 1.8 lens. And I did not make mistake on this. Lens distortion with in-camera correction is much worse for Sony 20mm than for Samyang 24mm. I understand that Sony is 20mm and Samyang is 24mm, but man, that is a huge difference. I took some shots while on a trip to Alaska and I had only Sony 20mm. Each photo had to be corrected and could not be posted straight out of the camera. And after correction, corners were destroyed for each shot using a Sony lens. With Samyang that distortion does not exist in JPEG files at all. Going to sell my Sony soon. Focusing in low light. Both performed the same. Image quality not considering distortion both perform the same. For street photography, Sony 20mm is NO GO. All structures are bent. For group shots side people are stretched with Sony 20mm. That problem does not exist with Samyang 24 mm at all. Sony 20mm landscape photography - if you have trees in the picture, side trees will be bent. So, practically I do not see any use case for Sony 20mm. Samyang 24mm does not have this problem.UPDATE 11/18/21 - After using this lens several times, I noticed that it takes about 30 or more seconds for the lens to "boot" while locking aperture dials on the camera in AP mode. Once I power the camera up, I cannot adjust the aperture in AP mode using dials and have to flip the switch on a lens up and down to make it work or wait about 30 seconds. That is knocked off 3 stars from my original 5-star review. Maybe it could be fixed by future firmware updates, but it will not stop me to return this lens.UPDATE 11/20/21 The switch is completely broken and shorting between Mode 1 and Mode 2 constantly even not touched at all. Returning.UPDATE 6/6/22 - Got another copy of the lens and still returned it. Very strong purple fringing and autofocus issues. Turned the camera on and a person's face was right in front of the camera, it took around 10 seconds for the camera to acquire focus. Purple fringing is so bad, that you cannot film or take pictures of water streams, because it all going to be purple. Out of focus tree branches will be with visible purple fringing. You can see for yourself in this video: (youtu . be /Udj_hyGIMYw)

Excellent all around prime lens with a few tricks up it's sleeve. It's very compact and well made, even though it's mainly made of engineered plastic. It feels very good in the hands and is very lightweight. The lens also includes a decent lens hood as well has a handy travel case.Autofocus works great and is fairly speedy on my Sony A7Rii. The focus is very accurate as well. There's a neat focus hold button which also has a great function to focus to quickly focus to infinity if you're into astrophotographic shooting. This button can also be reprogrammed in the camera menu. The other cool feature is the custom mode 1 and 2 switch. In position 2, the focus ring turns into an aperture ring. I love that feature!Photo quality is excellent at all apertures - super good when stopped down a little. Great lens overall.

    AMAZING Lens for Sony ZV-E10

    A.C. · April 8, 2022

I bought this "full-frame" lens for my Sony ZV-E10 APSC and it crops in from 24mm to 35mm and is perfect for video work with plenty of very pleasing light at F1.8, the background Bokeh just melts the background away and only leaves what is in focus, and for video focus pulls there is little breathing on focussing which is very pleasing. On the Sony ZV-E10 when you press the blurry background button with this lens... WOW, I love it!I'm just a beginning learning to use the different length prime lenses and these Samyang (Rokinon same thing) lenses are just amazing value and offer such incredible value.I was originally looking at the amazing Viltrox 1.8 line of lenses also, the Samyang's equivelants being a touch more expensive but the Samyang lenses have one thing up on the Viltrox in that they're all "weather sealed" and the Viltrox lens are not (I nearly bought the Viltrox, but glad I got the Samyang value).
