The Yearling

Description:

Life abounds in the 1870s Florida scrubland that's home to young Jody Baxter. There are bears to hunt, cash crops to plant, evenings of storytelling with Pa and Ma. And there are timeless lessons of love and letting go that Jody learns from Flag, the orphaned pet fawn that follows him around with devotion. From Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, and sensitively directed by Clarence Brown (National Velvet), The Yearling is superb family entertainment that knows well what a shiny harmonica means to a lonely boy or what a six-day rain means to hard-luck farmers. Gregory Peck, Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman, Jr. play the Baxters in a resplendent film nominated for seven Academy Awards and the winner of two, plus a Special Award for the year's Outstanding Child Actor to young Jarman. SPECIAL FEATURES: Screen Guild Players Radio Broadcast; Cartoon Cat Concerto; Theatrical Trailer

Wow! Great movie, they just don’t make ‘em like these heart tugging, real life, good wholesome storyline! Seeing the real “Florida scrub” and how hard people had it pioneering the way for others. After you see the movie, visit Cross Creek if you can. Home of the author and where the book was written, Marjorie Kinan Rawlings ….. Watch it with your family. Sort of like Old Yellar…. One of my Favorite movies. Let children watch it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and moving

m. · October 2, 2019

I read the book in seventh grade but only got around to watching the movie now (57 years later). I was surprised at how beautifully made and moving it is. Sure, "Jody" overacts at times (probably with the encouragement of the director), but his naturalness and sincerity shine through. Jane Wyman is superb as the chilly mother who finally softens at the end. A very young Gregory Peck already shows some of the mannerisms that became more marked as he grew older, but the empathy between him and his son is remarkably unforced and touching. The bear fight in the film probably wouldn't be allowed nowadays! Real hunting dogs getting hurt by a real bear! The scene of deer running parallel to Jody and his pet yearling through the Florida woodlands, while an orchestration based on a theme by Felix Mendelssohn plays, is magnificent...Technicolor at its finest. In fact the color is so crisp I wonder if the movie has been restored or remastered in some way? The last half hour is deeply touching without being sappy...practically guaranteed to bring tears and a lump in the throat.Nice to see Hollywood handle a classic work of literature with taste and honesty.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Yearling is worth checking out

C.H. · January 14, 2013

The sound quality was poor, but the picture quality was very good. Beautiful scenery and animal shots. The bear and dog scenes (too long, but wonderfully filmed), were especially good. Unfortunately, Jane Wyman did not physically fit AT ALL the depiction of the large woman, Ory, in the book. Her emotional responses to Penny, Jody and the circumstance they faced were well-played, however. Peck was too handsome and healthy-looking for the role of Penny, but I guess that's what Hollywood.looked for at the time. The boy looked just as Jody was described in the book, but was a very poor actor--way too much emoting in scenes that didn't call for it. The most true-to-the story and character actor was the young boy who played "Fodderwing." And of course Forrest Tucker had his turn at accurately portraying another mean, vindictive character: Lem Forrester. The film was fairly true to the book--certainly to the gist of it. The portrayal of the eight-day rain and its devastating aftermath were realistic and very poignant as was the funeral scene. Many side-stories had to be omitted, and several scenes were in different places than they were in the book, but in general the story was told as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Yearling Comes Of Age On Blu-Ray

Q.K. · May 11, 2021

Warner Archive releases this beloved, fondly remembered family film from 1946 and based on a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings starring Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman as the Baxters, who live as crop-planting pioneers in the Florida Everglades in the late 1870's with their young, lonely son Jody(excellently played by Claude Jarman Jr. in a powerful performance) who befriends an orphaned pet fawn he names Flag, whom he has some happy times with until Flag grows too big and hungry, eating their corn crops until a drastic, tragic solution must be made...Looking superb in HD, a huge upgrade from the 2002 snapper case DVD in a 4K restoration that brings the color to sparkling life like never before. Porting over the theatrical trailer and a Tom & Jerry cartoon, omitting the trivia sections but instead including a radio adaptation presentation with Gregory Peck.Would love to see Warner Archive release similar animal-themed films like "Lassie Come Home", "Son Of Lassie", Courage Of Lassie" and "Hills Of Home" for example.

After being asked to review this film, these are my thoughts. The acting is fine, but there is little reality here. ThesePeople live in a mansion! I can't see raising deer as pets,We eat them down here. "Here Flag, here Flag". But I digress. When that little dog ran away from the bear fight, I told maw,"HooooooEeeeeee, look at that little dog EMOTE, he shouldHave gotten an honorable mention at the very least. I can't believe any but the suicidal wouldWant to chore in south florida wearing black. And Peck talkingAbout digging a well "one day".
