5.0 out of 5 stars "The Crow" on 4K - A must-own disc for fans and physical media collectors!

T. · May 8, 2024

It's utterly insane to think that "The Crow," one of the definitive movies of the 90s, is thirty years old this year. I remember being a child when it came out and hearing all about it, and eventually stumbling onto it and becoming a fan when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. It's one of those films that really needs to introduction. The late Brandon Lee stars as Eric Draven, a rock musician who was murdered along with his wife-to-be Shelly one year ago. When a mystical crow brings Eric back to life and imbues him with superhuman abilities, he sets off on an odyssey of revenge and redemption, seeking to put the wrong things right bring justice to the men responsible for his murder...Directed by Alex Proyas, the film largely succeeds thanks to the remarkable performances and exquisitely stylized presentation. The movie's visuals are a celebration of grunge and goth, and its hauntingly mournful tone sets a beautiful mood. And there isn't enough that can be said for Lee, who I firmly believe would have become a superstar had he not tragically been killed during production. Special props also go to the excellent Ernie Hudson, a criminally underrated Michael Wincott and the excellent child-actress Rochelle Davis.I sat down and watched this wonderful new 4K release earlier tonight, and I have to say... if you're a fan or a physical media collector with a 4K set-up, this is absolutely a must-have disc! The 4K presentation is excellent all around, and this is easily the best I've seen the film look on a home-video release-- and that's saying a lot, because I felt the 2011 Blu-Ray was quite good. Picture quality here is near crystal-clear, with subtle increases in detail from start to finish. Things like the textures of the wardrobe are more noticeable, and many of the sweeping shots of the city (accomplished with miniature photography) look significantly sharper. The film also maintains a nice level of grain throughout the runtime, with no noticeable noise reduction... and thank god, because the graininess adds a lot to the presentation.Additionally, I adored the color of this release. The film is already quite dark visually, and I was worried since 4K discs can sometimes play up black levels too much. But this 4K wisely pumps the breaks and only lightly tweaks things like the contrast and black levels, creating a very nice balance. This is what I'd call a pretty ideal 4K remaster and release... it gives us the film we love as we remember it, but just a little better all around.I haven't been able to check out the new bonus features yet, though from what I understand there is roughly 40 minutes of new content, in addition to what was included in previous releases. So far as I can tell, everything that was on the previous DVD and Blu-Rays is here. All in all, I give this release the highest of recommendations. This is one of those discs that I firmly think everyone should have in their collection. It's a great film given an excellent presentation.5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrible sadness ends in revenge for the innocent

N.L. · January 11, 2010

The Crow is one of my favorite goth movies ever. It is a small classic in it's own way. It is a fantasy, an action film, and a romance all rolled into one dark and disturbing, scary, sad, inspiring, and sometimes downright chilling saga. Based on the graphic novel by James O'Barr, the movie has unfortunately been romanticized into a somewhat different story. Way to go Hollywood. But the story works. Brandon Lee is a good choice for the part of the main character, Eric Draven. He is a young and good-looking rock musician. His girlfriend, Shelley Webster, is petitioning for tenant's rights in her building in the worst part of downtown Detroit. The story in told interesting enough through Eric's flashbacks and cop scenarios throughout the film. The little girl Sarah tells us at the beginning of the film that a crow can carry back the soul of the dead once a terrible sadness will not let it die. And what happens to this couple is evil. Thugs barge in and shoot Eric until he falls out a five story window. Then they gang rape the poor girl until she dies later of agony in the hospital. It all happens on Devil's Night, the nickname in the area for the night before Hallowe'en, when they were to be married. Devil's Night is so named because the entire town goes up in flames as to the wishes of Big Dollar, the head of the underworld Syndicate. Exactly one year after the tragic event, Eric bursts out of the grave and, led by the huge raven, finds his way back to the deserted apartment where the murders happen. Everything he touches reminds of the event in a crazy flashback. He paints his face to look like the clown he feels he is. Fueled by a pulsing goth rock soundtrack by banad like The Cure and Nine Inch Nails, he sets out to destroy the thugs. In the meantime he ends up destroying the entire Syndicate. The violence is too sadistic and the atrocities are too real. But the villians are so sleazy and despicable that it somehow seems necessary. Eric also saves Sarah off the streets and gets her mother away from the gang. With the help of a kindly black cop he finds out everything he needs for all this action. But Big Dollar's girlfriend Myca disables the Crow so Eric is no longer quite as unstoppable as he was when it's guidance gave him the ability to conquer death. The final sequence in the church is a thrilling shootout to save Sarah's life after Eric tries to return to the grave to be with Shelley, his obsession. Eric wins the fight against Big Dollar by placing his hands on his head and giving him all Shelley's pain. He falls off the roof and is impaled on the gargoyles. Eric then, exhausted of energy, returns to the graveyard, where Shelley comes like an angel to kiss him back home. And home they go. The cop, on suspension, gets to say "I told you so!" to his snarling boss as he is wheeled out on a stretcher. No one believed his story. It's quite a yarn, true. But it works. The revenge fantasy is very inspiring, even though the violence and the flashbacks are hard to take. The movie does not stay true to James O'Barr's version, but it is exciting in a different way. It opened the door for the genre of graphic novel movies to come. And if you are brave, you should see it, even if it too dark and dangerous. Because it is worth seeing. It;s exciting.
