5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product! Affortable practical solution

Execellent solution. We are very happy with this product. It keeps our pup independent .. freely coming in and going out when we are home and the the door can be closed easily when we dont want him to go out. It still leaves enough space for humans to go out in the yard comfortably. Flap closure can be better but it hasnt really affected its functionality. Our pup loves it and uses it well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great option

I'm very happy with this purchase. My dog learned to use it in a couple of days. The double flap system works well. The build is very solid. I like the double paned glass versus a lot of the other single paned examples I've seen and used before.Be prepared to add your own foam (or other type) weather stripping in addition to what comes with the item. The double sided tape on the plastic sweep that is supposed to insulate the vertical part of the overlapping sliding door panes doesn't stick well to the door or the rubber itself. It's a minor issue and can be fixed. But it will be needed in very hot or cold weather.I'm very handy with DIY so installation wasn't difficult. It may be more difficult for others. The item was packed up well. Assembly instructions were easy to understand. My Pella sliding door sits on a narrow rail in the bottom track. Because of that, this item wouldn't sit all the way down into the track. I was able to solve for this by cutting slots in the bottom of the item with a dremel tool to allow it to straddle that rail and sit all the way down into the track.Overall for the price it's a great item. I highly recommend versus the cheaper options available.

Our senior dog has bladder cancer needing to go out quite a bit and this saves us from having to let her out, especially at night we don't have to get up she just comes and goes. Of course initially there is some slight training involved w/treats to learn the door. The overall door is quality made and worth the price for the double pane glass needed for the winter months. There will most likely be some alterations needed since every slider door frame is different. I had to cut off part of the bottom plate w/a reciprocal saw then install a piece of wood beveled out in the middle to accommodate my door track groove. I'm sure if you don't want to go to this extent you could get some thick foam insulation strips that had adhesive on one side. I installed 2 vertical runs of foam insulating v-seal in between where the slider and panel, then added a 2" rubber strip between slider glass and slider frame gap to seal from door being partially open. Somewhat of a design flaw that others have noticed is the door flap does not always seat itself properly leaving a large gap on the bottom allowing air to just flow in. There are 2 magnets on the bottom that are supposed to freely slide up and down to catch the door as it swings open and close however if the gap is too big the bottom magnets do not attach to door panel. Also, the door will swing open freely during heavy winds bc it.is not properly attached to the bottom defeating the purpose of a winterized door. Either they need to design this flap with stronger magnets or less of a gap. I had to raise the magnets about 1/2" higher then added duct tape to hold in place while still allowing for the magnets to have some slight movement. The locking bar that comes with it is also sturdy. Despite needing to figure out some issues, I've made the deal tightly sealed and operable w/the need to occasionally manually clasp the doggy door itself if the flap is misaligned, other than that it saves us from constantly having to get up to let the dogs out. Aesthetically, it looks like it is part of my slider which is also nice, doesn't look cheap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Non-existant customer service

M.J.K. · January 18, 2023

I purchased this door in late October of '22, and installed it early November. After installation, I noticed that the outer flap wasn't sealing properly. I can push back into place so the magnet holds it in the closed position, but the next time it's used, the flap remains open. It seems to have a permanent warp in the material (see photo). I ordered the "extreme weather" version of this door, as we live in a cold climate area, often with windy conditions. Hence, with the outer flap not sealing properly, a strong wind easily blows open the inner flap, allowing a gust of cold winter air into the room.I went to the PetSafe website and spoke with Jena via their online chat on November 11. I explained the situation to her, and she suggested that I contact their customer service via email (info@petsafe.net), explaining the issue. She also said to include in the email a copy of the invoice from Bolo, along with photos showing the issue with the door. As our online chat was on a Friday, she said it would be 3-4 days before getting a response.I sent the email the same day (11-11-22) with the requested information (proof of purchase, photos, and explanation of the problem).Receiving no response as of December 1st, I once again emailed customer service, asking if the issue was being addressed.By December 27, there is still no response, so I emailed them yet again! It's now January 18, and STILL no response.I really shouldn't need to spend $70.00 on a replacement part for a brand new item that cost me $300.00+, but I have no other option at this point. This is unfortunate, as it is overall a quality product, well designed and sturdy construction. If you have no issues with this product, it's a very nice option for a dog door. But Lord help you if you ever need to contact PetSafe customer service.

Instructions great, door is awesome

A.C. · December 8, 2024

I purchased this for my balcony door to see if my dogs would actually use it before I committed to cutting a hole in my ground level exterior wall. The door was easy to install but I did use extra weather stripping to help insulate against drafts. The door itself is 3 layers and stiff but even sealed at -20°c. The quality is great.

OK insert, crappy pet door, BUT!..

V.D. · December 31, 2022

The door insert itself is OK. Pretty easy to assemble and install. As others already said, a rubber layer between two metal halves would solve the draft issue - but a weather strip over the connect line solves it anyway. Now, the pet door is CRAP.What "Extreme Weather" they had in mind, I wonder? Extreme cold of +15 C somewhere in South China? Because it just cannot be used even with a mild cold of -10 C. The draft is terrible! All three flaps do nothing to stop it - the external ones stick to magnets on the bottom, but have gaps on the sides. The inner one has some 5mm gap from all sides, so its purpose is not clear at all.The weather strips they provided doesnt cut it. There are still small gaps between the insert and the sliding door, and they let the cold draft in. What should be used instead is the weather strips which sticks to the insert but overhang over the sliding door, fully covering the gap.The magnets are so strong that my cats cant open the flaps. I had to bend one flap up - which made the cold draft issue all the more terrible. And there is no 3-way lock, too. If i want to keep one cat at home at night while letting the second one in, there is no way. It is either open or closed. (I wonder if the designers ever had pets?)But there are good news if you're into DIY.Remove those useless flaps.Cover the huge hole with a wood plate with weather strips between it and the metal.Buy one of those normal doors with brushes on all sides and a three-way lock.Install that new cat door thru the wood plate.Cover all gaps with weather strips. And viola! You have yourself a quite weather-proof pet door.See the photo for the end result. Works awesome!

The flaps are designed to fail

S.B. · March 17, 2025

The metal part of this product, the tempered glass, these are mostly fine. I did not want a tempered glass window, but when I discovered it had one, I just accepted it. I figured that it was mostly fine. The door frame itself is very sturdy, very reliable. It seems like a fairly decent unit. But it wasn't until 8 months after purchase and installation that I became aware that the PVC has vulnerability. 4 days ago I noticed that the flap in the door had broken at the top. Looking at it, I can easily see that the failure is in the design. The pet flaps are PVC, the holes at the top there, there is only 2mm of material between the holes and the outer edge of the PVC. I unscrewed the cassette holding the flaps in place and slid the channeled plastic piece out to replace the flap. And cut myself because the edges are sharp, so do be careful about that. There are five pins holding the flaps in place, so you have to remove the pins, this part is fairly simple enough. The channeled plastic piece is pretty tight, took some effort to get the PVC in far enough to line up with the holes. Placed the pins back in, slid the plastic piece back into the cassette and screwed it back into place. Yesterday to my chagrin I find that the replacement pet flap is broken in the same way that the previous one was. First one lasted 8 months, second one lasted 2 days. The replacement flap is part #PAC11-11039, which are $30 for 2 replacements. The design is fundamentally flawed, using a ruler there is 3mm of distance between the bottom of the holes and the outer edge of the flaps. The holes are 1mm each, but there's only 1mm of PVC material between the holes and the edges because for whatever reason the flaps have a 1mm semi-circle punched out above the holes at the edge. The PVC is 0.5mm thick. With little other choice, I will need to construct a replacement for the cassette (never mind just the flap) with a hinged metal flap. These petsafe doors are not cheap, the extreme weather unit cost me $450 all told when the unit was $400. Now the same unit is $473 baseline. So when petsafe tells us that they can't offer us a hard plastic or steel or aluminum replacement "to save us the cost of metal parts," I find it to be a hard pill to swallow. In only two days the replacement flap was broken. It feels like a subscription model at that point, buy replacement flaps that will fail and need to be replaced again.

Good Pet Door For Extreme Cold - After You Modify It Due To Some Poorly Engineered Parts

G. · September 11, 2023

It's a very good invention, but some poor engineering and materials choices means you will need to modify it to work to its potential. The frame and glass parts of this are good quality. The way it installs in a sliding door is very good design. The new adjustable locking bar is much better than the crappy latch on the non-extreme weather version. The rubber flaps, however, are poorly engineered. When installed correctly (and I tried as much adjustment as I could) this is way too hard for most small dogs to push (we have a few dogs between 9 and 14 lbs). I had to disassemble the flaps and carefully cut about 2 mm off the long edges of both flaps to get it useable. There are also two strong moving magnet closures at the bottom, one of which I had to duct-tape in the down/open position as both of them were too strong to let it open easily. It now opens easily enough and yet always returns to the proper closed position. The weatherstrip that goes on the edge that contacts your patio door when closed was definitely the wrong type. It was a rather stiff/dense rubber-ish which does not compact and did a very poor job sealing against the patio door. I spent a fair bit of time scraping that off using a heat gun, then replaced it with flexible foam type weatherstrip about 1 cm x 1 cm ( bought a roll of it at Home Depot for about $8).The locking bar is well designed and made, but ruined by a crappy mount that breaks easily. There is a plastic bracket with thin plastic pin upon which the lock bar hangs when not engaged. This broke after a few week, as I expected. I have to replace it with long metal screw, requiring drilling into the patio door frame. If they made this bracket out of metal it would be great.Have used this through 1 winter and summer in Edmonton, Canada in temps ranging from +32C to -35C and it has worked quite well - now that I fixed three design flaws.
