The Last Monument

Description:

About this item:

One small handwritten letter,
Sent from a dark, remote corner of the planet,
And lost in the system for sixty years,
Is about to change the entire human race.

Outside Denver, Colorado, Joe Rickards stands over a small aircraft wreckage, studying burnt remains still smoldering in a field of freshly fallen snow...an investigator for the NTSB, working to carefully roll back the last several hours and identify the cause of the accident.

But this time, he can't.

The details behind this tragedy don't add up. Unlike every other investigation of Joe's career, the facts make no sense. Each new piece of information only makes the accident more mysterious, and more baffling.

Why would a person receive an age-old letter and suddenly disappear into the thick of night...paying to be flown out of a closed airport in the worst possible weather conditions, by a pilot who hadn't had his hand on the stick in years?

With the only surviving relative insisting her grandfather would never have climbed into a small airplane in the first place, even in perfect weather.

A bizarre string of events culminating in a horrible accident unlike anything Rickards has experienced. Leaving his only hope at understanding it in the hands of the victim's sole remaining relative. Beginning with how a mysterious letter could turn up after being lost in the system for sixty years. Sent by someone who should have already been long dead.

A single letter, Joe Rickards is about to discover, with a secret that will change the entire world.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good one!

Most I would say are on classics I’ve should have read in school and didn’t. I lost out on so many rich and informative subject areas. When I move to fiction it’s for pure escapism and entertainment. If the author doesn’t grab my attention I move on so not to waste my time. Michael Grumley captured my imagination and also got at a core of my values and beliefs. His 1st also was touching on what is happening today. I will read another one of his books!

Re-read this book and enjoyed it immensely. My husband bought it on audible and thought it was a new release. Had to tell him it was not but I couldn’t fully remember the details of the story. I expect there is more to tell-

3.0 out of 5 stars Very light and quick read but unsatisfying.

J.C. · May 5, 2025

This book was frustrating to read because there is too much left out about the characters until the very end, which doesn’t really end. There are also way too many questions left unanswered. I think that it’s unrealistic that the 2 main characters would have come together as they did. The content is just not deep enough for me. I guess there’s going to be a sequel. I won’t be reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, well scripted novel with an intriguing science fiction twist. The 2nd book should be very interesting.

Good, exciting story about interesting people. This will make a good day’s reading for science fiction lovers. Enjoy the story.

Look for a good read for a sunny or rainy day.The last Monument would fill the bill. Just be careful once You start you won't want to stop .Plus it will drive You nuts with trying to guess what is it going to be. As the worlds worst mystery guesser , I didn't guess right but I enjoyed the ride. It's a very light action /adventure, with a twist, well more then one. Its a pleasure to read but not close to bedtime I was up to 3am twice so watch out we all need our beauty sleep. I was that happy with the end of the book, no I'm not going to tell . felt it was just a little wer one of the best book this summer or stash it a way for winter and a long winter read. Just remember to read. It. When you have lots of time. Have a good end to summer be careful and happy, Love from the rainy side. BF

Imaginative and easy to read

Perhaps a little too many scenarios that left the reader hanging until they were resolved. But the story drew me in and the ending was unexpected and satisfying.

Chrichton meets Baldacci

So excited I could finally give this book the time it deserves. Had it waiting in the wings for a while. At a time when many mass book series out there are pumped out lacking in developed writing and editing, it’s great to sit down with a really good read. Great story, well written and well edited with intriguing characters. Michael never disappoints.

Yeah, the plot is interesting but...

M.L. · July 14, 2020

When I started the book, it had got me full attention. A letter found accidentally 60 years after sent, and all the mystery of it: who wrote, why and when exactly. 10 out 10. But after this first part, things began to be more of the same: another search for a lost Indiana Jones kind of City and from that point on the book was good but not the exceptional quality used to be on others written by this same author. The end - probably for personal reasons - was a spiritual one: a second chance to meet someone you love for a brief moment of time. I confess that I was expecting a lot more...If you have spare time, worth the shot.

A tour de force

Michael Grumley’s easy reading style is matched by his ingenuity and unique way of getting us all involved in his ‘treasure hunt’. With every twist and turn, and there are plenty, we are led forward to an answer that is both exiting and unexpected. A great story teller deserves to be read widely and I am more than happy to continue my ongoing reading journey with him.

Worth reading

I liked this story. It ended not the way it began but in the way it should. Characters were real and realized. The plot was consistent and tautly written. I closed it quite satisfied.
