5.0 out of 5 stars 🎬 Powerful Story and Amazing Cast

C.K. · October 25, 2025

A classic worth owning. The acting, especially from De Niro and Walken, is incredible and the story still hits hard. It’s long but worth every minute. I’ve always loved this movie. My family is from near Clairton, so it hits close to home, and my mom grew up around the same era the film portrays. The story feels real, the acting is powerful, and it still gives me chills no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

Robert De Niro has made many, many iconic films in his time that will live on for generations. The films span time periods, decades and cultures. The list is long and distinguished and for good reason, he made brilliant films with brilliant performances and chose brilliant scripts. Any film maker could make a masterpiece with De Niro in his prime. One film maker took full advantage of his opportunity to do so.Michael Cimino's second film was the period at the end of a long sentence that was the Vietnam War. The Deer Hunter may have been the most, sadly forgotten film by many, as it's rarely shown on television and certainly not on pay cable channels. It was the darkest side of the war that everyone knew was terrible, dark, sad and cruel. The story is that of several Pennsylvania steel worker friends and what happens when three of the them are proudly shipped off to Vietnam and leave their small blue collar town behind. After being captured POW's and facing the horror of what a POW goes through they struggle to return home and find any sense of normalcy. The Deer Hunter took much criticism at the time of it's release and since for it's most controversial scenes during the POW capture. The prisoner's are forced to play Russian Roulette for sport for the Vietcong to gamble over. The film then shows the effects their capture and the roulette has on the three surviving veterans. The controversy is over whether or not these things really happened or if this was a figment of the imagination of the screen writer. The true fact is that it doesn't matter. The scenes were shown for one reason only, and that's because the show so harrowingly how horrific this war and ALL wars are. These powerful scenes that are even hard to watch no matter how many times you see them are like that so they make the deepest impact on the viewer and reach him in an effort to show the ferocity of war. When Robert De Niro was awarded the AFI lifetime achievement award in 2003 with a special ceremony, they touched on most of his films and showed clips of interviews where he discussed his films. During no other discussion was he nearly as emotional as he was when he talked about The Deer Hunter and the affect it had on him. He was nominated for every award across the board but won very few, sadly.Christopher Walken emerged an acting star for his role as Nick. Nick becomes disconnected with reality and stays in Saigon and begins playing roulette for money and the thrill, not realizing his actions and what he has left behind at home. It's only when Michael (De Niro) returns to Saigon to attempt to bring his friend home does he briefly see his friend through his jaded and fogged view of life.Michael Cimino never achieved again anything close to The Deer Hunter in his career, nor does he ever have to. His film left an indelible mark on the minds of those who saw and those who continue to discover it. While the film will be remembered for it's terrifying roulette scenes and for Walken's stunning performance. It will also be known for bringing Meryl Streep to the forefront of the movie world and being the last work of John Cazale who was in some of the most pivotal movies of the decade. It was the sad and last word on a horrific time in American history. The film is not a perfect film, but all of it's aspects together from the story and the emotions it draws on to the acting to it's most beautifully haunting musical score, it's a movie that couldn't be made any better. Many artists make many many pieces and rarely are they masterpieces let alone one of them. Film makers are artists and many of them don't make masterpieces, Michael Cimino didn't make too many films but he has the distinct privilege of having made a true masterpiece, no matter how dark and depressing or sad it may be considered. It was truly a piece that had to be crafted and made and it was done with a perfect stroke by it's artists hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars WAR is Hell, Let's Not Repeat It

I saw this movie when it was first released. I was pretty young at the time but I do remember that It helped me to understand why so many soldiers were coming back emotional trainwrecks. When I recently watched it again it had the effect of making me feel transported back in time to 1970s, it's just so real to that time. The deerhunter movie is like a time capsule of real life during the seventies. The houses, the buildings, the steel mill, the bar all look reminiscent of life in an established city of the time. This could be Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland or an number of areas in the U.S. The wedding, the Polish neighborhood, the ethnic dancing, the clothing, the cars once again are accurate to the times. The behavior of people in the neighborhood as well reminds me of the seventies. People were friendly and knew each other. The mother of the groom looking for pity because her son isn't marrying a neighborhood girl. The bridesmaids look real not like models with a ton of makeup. The group of women wearing babushkas and carrying the wedding cake to the hall. This is something you might have seen in such a neighborhood. The behavior of the men who hung out together after work and who go deer hunting together. The phones are few and are attached to the wall. The men trying to honor a soldier who doesn't want to talk about the war. So true of the turbulent seventies. As we follow the group to the Vietnam war we see them dealing with a lot of different circumstances which have changed them in different ways. In the initial Vietnam scene one of the friends can barely deal with the emotional trauma of hearing men pulling the trigger with a gun held to their head. In the hospital Christopher Walken is so traumatized that he can barely communicate. These are things which really occurred during the Vietnam war. People treating death and killing as casually as swatting a fly. Later we see that the recently married fellow has lost both his legs. We see scenes in which multiple soldiers are returning home dead in metal boxes. And of course the scene where Robert Deniro attempts to persuade his friend to return home but Walken shoots himself instead is also very emotional. All of this gives those of us who didn't go to Vietnam a peek of the horror show we missed. This is a movie about a group of people dealing with the effects of war during the seventies. Those people were changed forever by war. Robert Deniros character can no stand to see handguns mishandled and will not shoot a deer. His recently married friend will not walk again on his own legs and possibly may never work again. The third friend is dead and buried at the end of the movie. Anyone who watches should be changed also in some way. This is movie that shows the watcher that war is hell. This is important especially for the young to learn. Today it is common to see so many kids glamorizing war and viewing themselves as indestructible while playing video games. This is a movie that makes a statement to "wake up and see the reality of war." Few movies have have made an impact upon me as this one has. I think that's why do many people see this as one of the greatest movies of all time.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

T.P. · April 27, 2012

My interest in cinema and film began about a year ago. I decided I'd methodically work my way through many of the "classics" of modern film - the films of Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, Tarantino, Leone and many more: but sincerely, and I mean this - none of them had more of an effect on me than Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter. This is, in my opinion of course, the greatest Vietnam War film, hands down. Now that's a bold statement, I know. I'm probably incorrect when I actually think about it - just because it's my favorite, that doesn't mean it's the best, does it?The Deer Hunter tells the story of three Russian - American steelworkers, Michael, Nick, and Steven. Michael (Robert De Niro) is a quiet, thoughtful and a very loyal friend to both Nick (Christopher Walken) - a chrismatic, loving man and Steve, (John Savage) the more sensitive one. Their wider circle of friends contains Axl (Chuck Aspergren) Stan (John Cazale) and John (George Dzunda). They are all hardworking blue collar men who labor in the steel mills of the town. The film opens with the men leaving work in the morning to prepare for Steven's wedding, which is taking place that day. The men are also planning one last deer hunting trip before Michael, Nick and Steven leave for their imminent voluntary service in the Vietnam conflict. This is one of the most brilliantly created pieces of work I have ever seen. Quentin Tarantino described The Deer Hunter as an epic in every sense - in aim, in length, in intention and in emotion. The film is comprised of three main acts over three hours, and not one second of it is wasted. There is no scene, no moment and no piece of dialogue from the masterpiece that is the screenplay that is not needed or superfluous. The dialogue and language in this movie is pure gold, and the cinematography is breathtaking. To any fans of John Cazale, it was also his last feature film, before his death from cancer in March 1978.Michael Cimino's reputation was permanently tarnished by the incredible finacial failure of his following picture, Heaven's Gate (1980). However Cimino's The Deer Hunter remains a masterpiece in the truest sense of the word, earning five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken, who is phenomenal is this film, and in the opinion of some, actually outshines Robert De Niro.I do not wish to give the film away as I would have absolutely hated it had someone done that to me. Be prepared for a breath taking journey of friendship, love, tragedy and the cruelty of war. The only thing I was am disappointed by is that I could never have seen this film in the cinema. The Deer Hunter is an unforgettable experience.I don't wish to give the story awa
