The smell is horrible. I tried airing out in open window for 2 days, soaked in soapy water, even tried washing each individual stone with soap and water and brush—and smell still there. I won’t be able to used for jewelry or essentials oils. I will continue to keep laid out and hope the smell dissipates.

I bought these heart shaped beads and some round beads also to make aroma therapy jewelry for essential and fragrance oils. While they are very pretty, the oils don't soak completely into them, even overnight. They do work much better with regular perfume sprays or drops because of the alcohol content and lesser oils. I think it's because they are painted lava stone, likely man-made, and the paint prevents absorption. The jewelry set I made is lovely at any rate. I'll try roughing up a bead slightly with an emery cloth and see if that helps.
