A good "Fall Back" Item - but not in 50+ pound crates!
I'd never had any Chef Boyardee products until 2-3 years ago, and I've found that while their "regular" ravioli is pretty nasty (either in 15 oz or big 1.3kg cans), the "mini Ravioli" seems to come from somewhere else, and has a reasonable flavour, not bland and not overpowering. It also doesn't disintegrate while trying to spoon it up. I would normally give it a 4 star rating, considering what it is. HOWEVER: The mini ravioli has come, up to now, in packages of 8 tins, each 15 oz - 1 large adult portion. It's not inexpensive, but it is a good to have a few tins in the pantry, for "just in case." But recently, there was a "deal" on Bolo, that offered a large number of regular-size tins for an extremely reasonable price. I don't know why I thought this would arrive in packages of 8 tins; instead, I came home to find my Bolo delivery driver (not a large gentleman) struggling to get a large crate onto my porch. A crate roughly 2 ft. in length and width, 21-22 inches tall. It weighed in at over 25 kg. For those using Imperial measure, that's about 55 pounds. Attempting to get this monstrosity over the sill was what some would call "challenging." With one good arm, and one arm having had 19 fractures (and limited in lifting power as a result), It required levering the damn thing over the sill with a snow shovel, just to bring it inside. That proved too much for the cardboard box, because it split along most of its seams, and that was when I found that the cans were loose inside the box. Sorting out this 'inconvenience' required a fair amount of work as well as bad language, as stray cans made their way through split seams, then rolled down stairs or under furniture.All of this might possibly have been overlooked but for one other fact: the "Use by" date on all the cans was less than 14 days from the date of delivery. Since mini ravioli is not something to be eaten three times a day, and since I am a bit reluctant to let any tomato-based products overstay their welcome, well over half of the order would be date-expired before I might get around to using it. Short-dating has been an issue with some other products ordered previously, but the sheer amount of this order that would become 'stale-dated' before I could used it made it not very much of a bargain at all - even ignoring the wrestling match to get the ridiculous crate into the house.What to do? A near neighbor volunteers at a local food bank, and she came with two healthy teenage sons carrying plastic bins, and gratefully accepted most of this order as a donation to the Food Bank. That group is stretched very thin lately, so this would not have lasted long.So, full marks for the product - which is quite good for something of that kind, but -1 stars for the absurd packaging and delivery, and a second -1 star for the very short product expiry date. Mini ravioli is tasty - occasionally - but this 'volume buy experiment' was not a good experience. Why the order was not split up into two or three smaller and more manageable packages I don't know. As for the stale-date issue - I was quite surprised by that, and not at all happy.
