5.0 out of 5 stars An Inexpensive Feature-Rich Camera

NOTE: long review but worth reading for tips and features.I shopped for a tiny sport camera that had to meet two criteria: it had to fit the 3D printed camera mount on my bike and it had to have an HDMI port to play back videos directly on my TV. With the APEXCAM I got that and more for less than $40. In the box were: a zippered case, the camera, camera mounts for any need, a remote control, TWO rechargeable batteries, a charging case and cord, and — a big surprise — a lavalier microphone! (There’s a built-in mike too.)The camera itself is a wonder. My previous sport cam had three or four settings total but the Apexcam has four separate menus of settings. There are settings for picture quality and pixel count, settings for color tone including B&W and Sepia if you want something other than the default settings. It seems just about every facet of still or video filming is adjustable in the Settings menus.Use the camera’s WiFi to connect to your phone or tablet by downloading the free Live DV app. TIP: if the app doesn’t want to load completely go to the app settings and turn off the cellular data option. After that the app loaded and worked fine. I could transfer items to the phone via wifi and control the camera in the app. (This is in addition to the wrist-mounted remote control that came with the camera.)You will need a MicroSD card up to 64 gig before you can use the camera. Some cameras like this will appear to be dead unless there’s a card inserted. I already had a card because: nerd. TIP: format the card in the camera to get the best results. There’s a Format option in one of the camera menus. To play back through HDMI to a TV or computer monitor you’ll also need an adaptor to convert the tiny HDMI port on the camera to the full-size port your TV uses. Those aren’t expensive but one is not included. I already had one. Without that adaptor you can either download pics and vids by direct connection to a computer, cable included, or remove the SD card and copy to your phone, tablet or computer using a card reader. My 5-star review is because I’m impressed with the value for the price and with the features of the camera and accessories. I am in no way connected with the maker or seller. Having used the camera for about a week in various circumstances I heartily recommend it. I think you’ll be happy too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera for the price

Great camera for the price! Batteries work well, the film quality is good, and the quality is great. I will be purchasing another one in the future!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, battery could be better, get an aftermarket mic

    A.C. · April 27, 2025

Sound is meh even with the mic provided so get your own.The software is kind of a pain to use when using their app and waiting forever for files to transfer so I recommend getting something to physically put the micro SD card into and take the footage from. Using the app is really bad.Quality is alright. 4k sure but it'll die fast so if you want to record more than an hour bring it's second battery.Battery lasts about an hour each.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good little camera

    M.M. · May 2, 2025

Way better then I was expecting for a 40 dollar camera. would recommend getting the attachments set. the footage looks unclear on the camera screen but when blown up on a tv or desktop the image really is 4k!

3.0 out of 5 stars It’s works ok- not as high of resolution as described.

    S.C. · April 18, 2025

The 4k quality doesn’t seem to be there or accurate of what the camera can do. Camera has stopped recording by itself. I almost returned but kept it in case I needed it for the summer. Not super impressed. Pictures are even worse quality even at highest resolution. Remote doesn’t work well at all either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Consider for low resolution (1080/60) with limited applications. Hard Pass for 4k.

    A.G. · December 17, 2020

Summary: Very inexpensive camera that might meet some needs at lower resolutions (1080/60). However, does not come close to the specifications stated (your results may vary) and hard pass for 4k video.Detailed Experience:When I found this camera, I really wanted the performance stated to be true-- would meet nearly everything I wanted for a 10th of the big name cameras’ price. I intended to video hockey games with the camera affixed to the glass so didn’t need the optical image stabilization and with ample lighting the sensor could be less sensitive. With the stated 170 degree field of view (FOV), only needed 2 cameras to cover the sheet of ice, so I bought 2.Initial impressions: Camera build seems fine relative to the price. Slightly smaller than my GoPro, lighter weight, mostly plastic build, pointed corners vs round of GoPro, similar size screen (not touch), and immediate access to connectors. Comes with 2 batteries, a nice clear underwater protective case, and a plethora of mounting options (albeit a couple I would claim are not very sturdy for action recordings), a remote recording toggle and a soft sided carrying case.Battery:One battery was in the camera, one external. However, to remove the battery from the camera requires a common screwdriver, e.g. really don’t find this as an acceptable solution. I tried my fingernail (not sturdy enough) and coins (too thick) without success. Kinda goes against the grain of on-the-go, action camera especially in light of the observed limited battery life. Using the 2 cameras across 6 games, I averaged 64min at 1080/60; 55min at 2.7k/30 and 40min at 4k/30 from a fully charged to completely depleted battery (camera shutdown) with the only actions performed setting the video resolution and recording. This is vastly different than the stated Apexcam response of “support 190 minutes working even on 4k video mode”, i.e. even if they were stating duration across 2 batteries, my results were less than 50%! FYI, WIFI and remote control were turned off with screen saver on 1min.An annoyance (not a deal breaker for me), was that the date/time had to be reset each instance of a battery change.Video:4k/30: First thing noted is that even though it was stated to be 30Hz video capture, camera appears to use a double frame, e.g. 1 sample for 2 frames, so effectively the video is at 15Hz. I verified by clicking frame by frame in VLC media player. Very disappointing and quite frankly it nearly triggers nausea (feels more like a strobing effect). In a very well lit rink, the fast images appears blurred/streaking (players crossing in the video let alone the puck movement). Thinking that this must be a firmware issue, I tried researching. My camera was Model: M80 Air Firmware: JL15IP79RGM_1.5 updated 20201001. While I could not find any updates (in fact I couldn’t find any), I did see similar complaints of duplicating frames with other OEMs with amazingly comparable cameras.Likewise, there was a glare about the lights. In the first game I used the included clear case (it seems very ruggid and protects the camera). Thinking that this could have been the culprit for the glare, second and later games I used a different mount. While the glare was slightly less, it was present across all video settings on auto (white balance, ISO). While I could have tried alternate contrast and ISO settings, I found the camera unacceptable for my use, and not worth the effort to further refine. While the FOV was stated to be 170 deg, my measurements were dramatically reduced at 80 degs.2.7k/30: While the video frame rate was MUCH better than the 4k, the blurring of faster moving play persisted and the glare against the lights was present (now without the clear case). Unfortunately, the measured FOV was even worse at less than 55 deg.1080/60: There still was some blurring of faster moving play, but this was this best mode in my opinion. There was less clarity of the players (lower resolution), but could see the action better and the FOV was measured at 80 deg. Instead of mounting at the blue lines, I placed behind the goalies to see their point of view.Picture Quality: Didn’t meet my expectations at any resolution and was far from the stated spec.Easy to Use: In general, the GUI was fine, but the battery case was very annoying. Some of the mounts didn’t really lock in place, e.g. would be a problem for a camera in motion.Value for Money: This was the least expensive camera, so went in with low expectations. Even with that consideration, there was only one video mode (1080/60) that was close to acceptable. If you are looking for an inexpensive 1080/60 camera, then may consider this one (although the battery cover would still annoy me). Otherwise, hard pass. PS. I intend to return these since they weren’t even close to meeting the specs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome helmet action cam!

    M.S. · April 19, 2025

I have bought 14 of these cameras and they have been great! They have been reliable with good battery life and easy to switch out batteries for continuous filming. The camera came with a TON of extras and accessories that have been really useful. We have mounted them on our helmets for ziplining.

    Problemi con il grandangolo

    P.M. · August 26, 2023
