5.0 out of 5 stars Small PC, enough for a home LAN firewall with high traffic and over 150 smart devices total.
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Pretty good first impression together with PFSense! Yes, it gets warm even when it's idle, but there is a simple solution for that: "AC Infinity MULTIFAN S1, Quiet 80mm USB Fan, UL-Certified for Receiver DVR PlayStation Xbox Computer Cabinet Cooling". This fan is pretty quiet, the size is a perfect match and it can run at 3 different speeds. In my case the lowest speed is enough to keep this device only at 2-3 degrees above room temperature. If it gets warmer I will simply switch the fan to its second speed and it will still be silent. The PFSense load and configuration took some time, but it 100% worth it. To my surprise the speed became noticeably faster since the entire parasite traffic was blocked. I asked Grok to generate me a step by step manual keeping in mind my router brand and model and it made it. There were some difficulties, but not too critical and easily resolvable. What nice is - I dropped an old 15" monitor and a keyboard together with this PC, UPS, cable modem, router, switch to where they are almost invisible, at the very top of the furniture where I can check it every time if I need to. The web interface is powerful and works pretty well on both my laptop and even my cell phone.
5.0 out of 5 stars Solid product!
I bought this device and installed pfSense CE for my homelab in June 2023. After two years, I have experienced no issues at all. Solid product!
5.0 out of 5 stars Drop in replacement for Netgate SG-2440 no config changes needed.
My work relies on pFsense (firewall/router) and I had a SG-2440 (2 core Atom C2358) go belly up after five (5) years, it wasn't the netgate products fault, e.g. Intel's Atom C2000 processor family has a fault that effectively bricks devices, costing the company a significant amount of money to correct e.g. Errata note AVR.54, titled "System May Experience Inability to Boot or May Cease Operation,"So I needed a replacement fast Netgate was great but the RMA process is about 2 weeks (in fact they covered it free of charge on a 5 year old unit), but I needed to be back on line yesterday. I couldn't get the "newer" SG-3100 as it has no AES-NI (required for the next generation of pFsense). So I was forced to look to other sources I settled on a Protectli FW4B (4 core Celeron J3160).I only lost one (1) business day as the Protectli FW4B arrived quickly (as in 2 days) sowing up at an Bolo locker on Saterday.PROS:I didn't need to change any configuration after 1) booting off a CE USB image and installing pFsense 2.4.4 then 2) updating the config.xml file on the Protectli FW4B system. The SG-2440 system has 2X the cores and 2X the performance over my old SG-2440CONS:I used the HDMI port and a USB keyboard to confiure, however the FW4B is picky out which LCD Monitors it will support. I have three 1920 x 1080 Monitors available but only one would sync up and display the Bios. Once I got a one of my three LCD monitors to sync up to the FW4B it was smooth sailing. Pontecelli claims they might have issues with weird resolutions. Note once pFsense is installed you essentially have a headless device after configuring it.Note, I didn't want to deal with a serial console, Pontecelli provided a micro USB to DB-9 Serial - seriously when is the last time anyone used a serial cable in the age of USB. Even if they supplied a micro USB to USB cable one would still have to find and install serial drivers something that is still a pain to do (I needed to do this for my old SG-2440)
5.0 out of 5 stars Small but powerful Firewall appliance at the right price
The best small business, and home firewall available. The FW4B gives you all the power you need to protect your home or small office network from outside incursions. Running PFSense the options to run system wide data caching, VoIP, VPN etc are almost endless.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Firewall, Just Happened to be Bad Luck
The media could not be loaded. Started out with 1 vault, planned to have 2 vaults for managing 2 locations. The first one came with bad RAM and bad CPU.Asked for a replacement, and the replacement had good RAM but during the memtest86 process, the vault decided to shut down and never turn back on again. So basically, the replacement turned out to be DOA.This is my second replacement, so I learned to be wise and do a memtest86 (even bought the 9.4 version) stress test before actually putting it into production. I'm glad the second replacement passed with flying colors! The tests I did were pretty much all of them, with 10 passes and the CPUs all active in parallel mode. Not sure if it's Protectli getting bad hardware or it's just broken hardware being exchanged around the ecosystem, but yeah, this upgrade was a pain. Still I'm glad the second replacement worked, you just have to be pretty lucky :)Update: I got the 4th unit so far, with 2 returned because of DOA and failing CPU/RAM, this unit also passed as well! For those looking to purchase one of these, definitely make sure to do a full MemTest86 run, at least 10 times with 0 errors!
5.0 out of 5 stars Customer support is top notch!
Protectli support was excellent in helping me be successful with getting the device set up correctly. That made this purchase very worthwhile!
Great alternative to Netgate hardware for pfSense or OPNsense
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } My trusty old Netgate sg-2220 died and I needed to get my hands upon a replacement ASAP. This little beauty had next-day delivery in my area, and I was up and running again in less than 24 hours after my original hardware failed.Everything you need is right there, and now I'm considering more of these for light automation duties around the house. HDMI output is useful, as fiddling around with the serial console with the sg-2220 was at times frustrating. Thought has been put into the rear-facing Ethernet and power as well, which works out well on a desk with your network cables facing to the rear.

Best firewall yet, and it looks cool
Over the years I have owned a fairly large variety of different firewalls. I started with consumer products and gradually moved towards the commercial product market.I would say that this product can offer much more than anything for a comparable price, and more than a good deal of more expensive commercial devices.pFsense is a dream to use on this thing. I have monitoring configured and I don't think I have seen the CPU go past 25% ever. My environment is not too big, household traffic plus a small business. However, I do have OpenVPN set up with several users and it still runs everything without issue.Speaking of VPNs, if you already have a firewall and are just looking to get a quality VPN box, this is a perfect fit. As it uses OpenVPN there are no additional licensing costs to worry about (as there are with so many other devices). Finally, this thing looks super cool!
Excellent device for running OPNsense
The barebones Protectli Vault is a fantastic piece of kit for anyone getting in to building their own firewall / router. You need to buy your own RAM and mSATA storage. Buying the barebones kit and getting the RAM and storage separately can work out cheaper than buying it includes, but you run the risk of compatibility issues. I settled on 8GB RAM and a 128GB storage drive and have had no issues. The device is delivered with the AMI bios flashed. If you buy directly from Protectli, you have the choice of AMI (similar to what would be on your normal computer) or Coreboot. AMI works with a lot more hardware but Coreboot has the advantage of being completely open-source. There's some discussion over whether Coreboot brings with it a slight performance increase but I haven't been able to prove it one way or another. I did choose to flash Coreboot to my Vault. This was an easy process of running a live USB with Ubuntu and following the instructions on the Protectli website. The process was a breeze and worked immediately.Once this was complete, I installed OPNsense. The process was as simple as following the install guide on their website. In theory, since this is an x86 platform, you could run almost any OS. Both pfSense and OPNsense work fantastic on the Vault. My Vault has been up for a few weeks now. It's running a number of VLANs with a DHCP server for each. I don't use it for IDS/IPS but plan to in the future. The system has been rock solid and I'm getting the full throughput my ISP advertises. The system idles around 2-3% CPU usage and occasionally spikes to 20% when changing settings in the web interface.Overall, the Vault (FW4B) has been excellent. You certainly don't need 128GB storage, but I'd suggest extending to 8GB RAM if you can afford it since most firewall operating systems load in to RAM when they boot, although 4GB minimum would suffice. This has been a fantastic upgrade to an old desktop running pfSense, the stability is unparalleled and price to performance is absolutely worth it. Whilst the upgradability is limited due to the form factor, the extremely low power draw of the integrated system makes it entirely worth it.I have absolutely no complaints regarding this product and thoroughly recommend it to anyone running a home lab or small to medium business.
