Description:

Twenty One Pilots shook the world with the release of their 2015 LP BLURRYFACE, an album that would go on to sell over 7 million copies worldwide and earn the band their first ever GRAMMY; Award as they shattered longstanding chart records, and captivated audiences worldwide on sold-out arena runs and at international festivals. Now three years later, the duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun have returned to write the next chapter of their story with TRENCH, the band's highly anticipated new studio album. TRENCH finds Twenty One Pilots fearlessly reimagining the possibilities of their music through the same candid expression and genuine identity that helped to cement their place as one of the largest bands in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing Musical Evolution

R.G. · October 24, 2018

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I hear a few dissenters out there who are dismissing this album as "rushed" or a "creative misstep". I completely disagree. I think some people who like the music of Twenty One Pilots don't realize that this band isn't a pop party song band. Yes, Vessel and Blurryface were heavy with pop sensibility and "up" melodies. But if you think that's all that is going on in those albums, you are truly missing out on what this band is about. There is a lot of depth to these guys, and the music they write has intellectual purpose.Trench is no exception. From a creative standpoint it represents an evolution not only musically, but personally for Tyler Joseph. This guy acknowledges how much fear and anxiety try to overtake him on a personal level. That resonates to a lot of people through his lyrics, voice, and songs. There is serious depth to this album if one only bothers to listen for it. Both musically and lyrically the songs are very deep. Listen critically, and you will find there is a lot going on that is subtle and meaningful. It is clear that a great many hours were spent agonizing over every minute detail of these songs. You don't make songs like these by accident. If you're looking for "Ride Pt. 2" or a repeat of "Stressed Out", it ain't happening. These guys aren't at all interested in repeating themselves. Tyler Joseph is a very intellectual soul and that has to come out of him in his creative process. Trench is that album that you don't quite get on first listen. But with each additional listen the songs worm deeper and deeper into your brain until you are absolutely in love with them. Where Blurryface offers pop gratification that is immediately accessible, Trench demands your time and attention to fall in love with it. It is telling a story as albums were always meant to do. So if you're dismissing Trench after only hearing once or twice my advice is to keep playing it for a while longer. It will eventually suck you in. My experience is the albums that pull you in slowly, are the ones you tend to love for the long haul. Trench is that kind of album.

It's very difficult to mess up with delivering a CD, so there's no reason for me to complain about anything. Love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely impressive

O.A. · October 6, 2018

I hadn't heard much of this band when I first got "Blurry face." As such, the first few times I heard it, I thought it was just bizarre. "Is this supposed to be hip-hop? Reggae? Is that a freakin' UKELELE!?" I was rather disappointed at first, but after a few listens, the confusion I had initially felt was replaced by a feeling of "I actually don't care what genre this is supposed to be, because these songs are all great." I was really looking forward to this, and, even though I've only owned it a day, I know it's another beautifully constructed album with no filler. If you liked "Blurry face," it's hard to imagine you'd be disappointed at all with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a mother- Thank you TØP

J.S. · January 12, 2019

Twenty one pilots continues its positive evolution from blurryface in this amazing album. In true tøp fashion, each song is a story, some connect and some are stand alone. The album IS a story. Love them or hate them, they must be appreciated. Talent like this, with the open, honest and raw lyrics , the brotherhood of Tyler and Josh, along with their family of fans, cannot be ignored. Twenty One Pilots are important and necessary.I’m a mother of a teenage daughter who has found herself with the help of tøp. I’m just one of many. But I’m also a fan. What these guys stand for, how they execute their message, and the love they exude is undeniable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album

R.a.T.G. · January 24, 2019

These guys are going to join/have joined the greats. Their entire catalogue is wonderful and a testament to their musical and personal journeys. This album is dramatic and fun and unexpectedly epic in places. Favorite song that I hope to see performed live one day is Bandito. We are in our early 40s and we hear traces of inspiration from artists from "our time" (80s,90s,early 2000s) but Twenty One Pilots is refreshing and modern and great. There is plenty to relate to and interpret on a personal level. Fun beats. I can go on ... : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Multi-layered songs - Tyler does it again!

P.W. · December 19, 2018

Twenty One Pilots latest shows the growth of their songwriting - experimenting with sounds, catchy melodies, introspective lyrics. Some of the songs seem to pay homage to 80's groups, which I really like. Also, I'm happy to see that Paul Meany of Mutemath was involved in the making of this album - Tyler Joseph and Paul's style really work well together. TOP is one of the few newer bands that I make a point to listen to.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Should Buy All of TOP's Records!

E.M. · January 26, 2019

I quickly became a huge fan of TOP, which I'm sure is very common, and well deserved. These kids are brilliant, honest, and talented.I liked "Jumpsuit" and "My Blood" when I heard them as singles, but they did not render me incapable of waiting for the CD to came out, frankly. However, buying Trench was absolutely a given, so now that I've had it awhile...I do love it, but it definitely ranks a distant third behind Blurryface and Vessel for me. I love nearly every single song from those two albums, whereas I'd say only "Chlorine", "Cut My Lip", and even "My Blood" now garners the same level of adoration. Still, there's SO much good on this album it's an easy recommendation... TOP continues to blow me away and deserves a ton of respect!
