Slab has live edges on both sides and is very nice. I wanted a finish that would be durable but not encase this beautiful slab of wood in a thick layer of plastic looking epoxy or even poly. After considering Tung Oil and Danish Oil, I came across Osmo. It was a recommendation from someone who had heard about it but never used it, so I took that recommendation with a grain of salt. But after doing my homework, I was interested in giving it a try. I am almost done applying - final coat going on tonight. But I wanted to share my thoughts in case someone else out there is on the fence. Obviously, it will take some time to decide on the durability of this finish, but for both ease of application, and look / feel - this stuff is awesome.Super low odor and thick enough that it doesn't run all over the place and drip. There are a number of videos on youtube where people (my favorite was from Isak Ziegner) are using different techniques to apply. I used my stir-stick to dribble a stream of product onto my wood, and then used a plastic putty knife to work the product all around. Once the entire slab was covered with product, then used a non-scour white pad to work it into the wood, and then used rags to buff it off. Just that simple. We filled some cracks with a tinted epoxy, and this finish brought that sanded epoxy to life ! almost to a neon extent. We used one coat of the Osmo extra thin 1101 as a base coat on the top and sides of the slab, but not the bottom (didn't have enough product). Then a single coat of this PolyX on the bottom, and 2 coats of Poly-X on the top. Can't wait to see how it holds up over time. It feels very natural to the touch, and makes the grain really pop. And this stuff really does cover like it says on the label - one can goes a very very long way.Based on my experience so far, I don't see myself using any other finish for interior woodworking projects. It was designed for hardwood floors, and if I ever refinish my floors might even use it for that. And they make a UV protective product that seems good for outdoor use. So many more projects I need to tackle now that I have found Osmo....

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly durable and easy quality finish

G. · May 8, 2020

Osmo has quickly become my favorite finish. It seems very expensive at first, especially for the size of the can, BUT a little goes a very very long way, a crazy long way. It took a few builds before I got used to just how little is needed. So it really is not all that expensive at all when you consider how far a can will go.I have found the finish to be very durable, and exceedingly easy and quick to repair. I had a customer who put a gouge into the top of their coffee table with a remote control helicopter, and I was able to repair the damage on site in a little more than an hour, and after a couple days you could not tell where the repair was done... if I would have used arm r seal I would have needed to sand/strip the whole top and it would have been at least a couple days work. The client was amazed with the turnaround and overjoyed with the result.I can not say enough good things about osmo polyx. My favorite variety of polyx is the gloss- which can get anywhere from a light satin sheen to a glossy polish, its very versatile, and the satin is a close second- it can be buffed to a nice shine if desired, so also very versatile. The only drawback of osmo polyx compared to varnish/poly is osmo is a bit more physically demanding, you are polishing the finish into the wood, and the more you polish and rub the better it turns out. Its not really a big deal in my opinion, but it might be a factor to some people I guess.PS. Just a tip: Use a white scotchbrite pad for application and buffing, and a grey scotchbrite if you want to sand between coats- though sanding between coats isnt necessary, you will get a slightly nicer end result on most species of wood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great woodworking finish

This is the second purchase of the Osmo Polyx Oil system. I really like how easy it is to apply and how professional the results look. So far I have used the hard wax oil on rift sawn red oak, walnut, jatoba, olive wood and hard maple. The results on all but the hard maple have been excellent. I think that I should have used the thinner version on the hard maple project. I was initially apprehensive about starting with the product as it is very expensive, but after using on some projects, the quality of the finish and the ease of completing the applications have made me reconsider. My first purchase of the Osmo hard wax was used on some pull out drawers for the kitchen. I made three oversized drawers from red oak and oak plywood and was able to get two coats on the drawers from the .125 L can. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product. Unbelievable results.

I purchased this product after watching some wood working videos on YouTube. I wanted something easy to apply and that would be very human safe. This product was everything I expected. You just have to make sure to apply it correctly. I applied this on a solid red oak desk I was building and it worked out well. For anyone that tries to use this with a grain filler such as Timbermate, I would not use a non abrasive pad to apply but some brush in a very thin coat because the non abrasive pad leaves these small circular patterns on the finish. If you have solid wood and no grain filler, then using a non abrasive pad is the way to apply it. You just have to rub it in very very thin in two coats. So far I've spilled like two things on accident on the desk. One was a salad vinegar and the other some sparkling water. In both cases, the two liquids would bead on the surface with no damage the wood underneath so its worked out great so far.My only con is: Price. While the product is great, I think the price is a bit high. I just wish the company could save us regular consumers a bit of money. Hell I'd buy more if they priced it lower ;).

Expensive but the small container seems like it will stretch a long way

It Did the Job

J.D. · September 22, 2023

Good product, we put it on oak parquet that we had lightly sanded and cleaned, and one can did about 200 square feet. But there is an odor, so best to apply in dry weather when you can keep the windows open! We used a 10 mil lint-free paint roller to apply.

It’s osmos oil.

B.H. · January 26, 2024

Works as advertised

Works okay, very smelly. Won’t use again.

J.W. · September 5, 2022

I’m an experienced woodworker, and I thought I would try some Osmo polyx oil since there are so many glowing reviews out there. Well, either they don’t know how to properly apply an oil finish (or shellac for that matter) to their projects, or they don’t have a sense of smell. Because this stuff STINKS. Worse than mineral spirits really. It smells of strong acetone, like nail polish remover, but lasts much longer. I can’t imagine doing a floor or countertop with this stuff. And I should have known to not believe the “one coat is all you need” bull. I’ve never ever been able to get good results from one coat of anything. And believe me, you need several coats of this stuff with normal sanding in between to get an acceptable result. Won’t buy it again.
