5.0 out of 5 stars Well done sequel
I was a big fan of the original "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" so I was a little skeptical when I saw that the producers were updating it with a Sixties spin. The original, starring Essie Davis as the indomitable - and very posh - private eye in the Roaring Twenties, was extremely well done even if it didn't follow exactly the marvelous novels of Kerry Greenwood. Since Miss Fisher never married and never had any children, and because her sister was gay, it seemed unlikely that there would be a niece to carry on her adventures. That problem was quickly cleared up, however, when it is revealed that Miss Fisher's philandering father had, in fact, sired a daughter who only learns about her relationship to Phryne when she is declared dead after disappearing in the New Guinea jungles a year earlier. This first series is short - only four episodes - but they are packed with interesting situations, some offbeat humor, and at least two budding romances. The ensemble cast is well chosen and the writing nicely reflects the early Sixties in terms of dialogue. The producers and directors have taken great pains - as they did in the original series - to stay faithful to the era.Personally, I enjoyed this first stab at continuing the saga of the Fisher women and hope that there will be a second.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great set of characters
I love the Miss Fisher's Murder Mystery series, all 3 seasons of it. This modern one is a Ms Fisher who is a niece. It also takes place in Australia. The dialogue is just as witty as the original one and the 4 episodes were very entertaining. The characters are well drawn and I look forward to more episodes in the future. I was sorry that Miss Fisher ended with 3 seasons but was happy to see just recently a stand alone movie that had a nice hook at the end that made me hope there will be more of them.
4.0 out of 5 stars '60s Update for Miss Fisher
An interesting idea for an sequel to Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, situating it in the Mod early 1960s instead of the Roaring '20s. I am not sure that it is entirely successful, given that there does not appear to be any more TV seasons coming up. But for those who enjoyed Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, it is not a bad romp.Phryne Fisher was clearly modeled after Louise Brooks, the famous actress/model from the 1920s who popularized the bob hair style, and was superbly portrayed by Essie Davis. The updated 1960's Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries, has Geraldine Hakewill playing the character of Peregrine Fisher. Peregrine's "look" is modeled somewhat on the actress Audrey Hepburn in her younger, gamine days (which ironically were the mid 1950s, not the early 1960s. But the look and character type fits with the stylish early 1960s when thin models like Twiggy were the rage. The four mysteries of this DVD are serviceable, but not exceptional. What the show does do well however, I believe, is to create enjoyable main characters.Peregrine is young, pretty, bright, witty and "game" for just about anything it takes to solve the mystery. The character of Peregrine's ally/foil--in the manner of Detective Jack Robinson for Phryne--is Detective James Steed (a tip of the hat, maybe, to John Steed from the 60's TV show, The Avengers?) cast and played well by Joel Jackson. Other characters circling around Peregrine who are interesting and fun to watch are former World War II spy Birdie Birnside, and Italian female biologist, Violetta Fellini , both members of a club of extraordinary females named the Adverturesses Club. While I would say that the pluses outweigh the minuses, there are minuses. Peregrine is sprite and spunky, but almost always finds herself "over her head" by end of each episode, and while she usually isn't quite the "damsel in distress", she is also often not in control--which gets tedious. The other flaw, I would say, is that, while the secondary regulars are fun, the episodic suspects tend to be stock characters, without much dimension and fairly predictable. All of which can make episodes feel predictable as well.As said, it is not clear that there will even be any more Ms. Fisher Modern Murder Mystery episodes. That would be a shame. The show definitely has its charm. and is worth a look for anyone who enjoyed the original Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, or enjoys more light-hearted murder mysteries in general.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wanted the set for our video collection.
Enjoyed this series on Acorn streaming.
5.0 out of 5 stars It was delivered , different woman playing Ms Fisher but she is a good substitute

5.0 out of 5 stars A great bit of fun and cleverness.
Like Vexed this is a crime drama which is patently unrealistic but loads of fun. The co-stars work well together. The plots are interesting but not too tricky. This won't tax your imagination but just sit back and enjoy--as I'm sure many will do.
5.0 out of 5 stars That it works and it's clear
The first time I saw this movie I really liked it and had to purchase both 1 & 2.It's a really cute movie
5.0 out of 5 stars The characters are a good fit.
This is a good home viewing Mystery. The characters work together very well and are a good fit for the time period. There is not a lot of high action drama and out of this world antics. It is easy to watch. Very enjoyable.
