詠唱か、トーチソングか、民族音楽か。深いところからの叫び、歌が、見事な曲と歌唱となって結晶する。
「Hello」の歌唱に驚いたのがきっかけで、このアルバムを購入した。以来、愛聴盤になっている。アデルの面白いところは、普通のポップスやロック（２拍４拍にスネアが入るような音楽）に傾いていかず、ありきたりのR&Bにもなっていないところだ。では何かというと、詠唱（チャント）やある種の民族音楽のようなものに近いと思っている。語尾などの上がり方を聞くと、ブルガリアンボイスのようでもある。あるいは、ひとの叫び声とか。そういう彼女の歌のルーツは、とても深いところにあるように思える。だから多くの人に訴えかける力を持っているのだろう。シャーデーの楽曲が、”トーチソング”といわれることがあるが、これはアデルの歌にもそのまま当てはまるだろう。ただ、これほど歌いあげなくてもいいのではないか。と、思うこともある。もっと抑えた方が、より感動が伝わる気がする。しかしそれは20代前半という年齢を考えたら、無理もないのかもしれない。出せるところまで出し切ってしまいたくなるのだろう。それとも彼女の声量を上手に録音できるだけのレコーディング環境が整っていないだけなのだろうか。ともあれ彼女が、30代、40代、50歳代になった時の歌唱が、今から楽しみだ。次のリリースは、この流れでいったら30代になっているだろうから、一歩、数段、深まった彼女の音楽世界に触れられるだろう。それと、これはこのアルバムの良さにもなっているのだろうが、ややヴァリエーションに欠けるきらいもある。アデルが歌いたいメロディを選んで歌詞を付けたら、こうなったという結果なのだろう。だからどうしても同じような曲が並ぶ。ワードローブの中が、灰色の服のグラデーションになってしまった、というようなかんじだ。だとしても、このアルバムの魅力はここでしか味わえないものだから、今日も、このCDをプレーヤーにセットする。ちなみに輸入盤では曲数が少なく、国内盤に入っている３曲のボーナストラックは貴重なので、入手するなら、こっちの方がいい。
