Arrived in perfect condition. Let it sit for a day for temp and humidity to stabilize. Tuned it in steps over two days to minimize stresses. It is holding tune with only very minor adjustments. I play guitar, and the mandolin is my fun learning instrument! For a beginner, like me, it is the perfect mix of price, quality, tone, finish (beautiful finish) and workmanship. Very pleased. Could not ask for better, at this price

4.0 out of 5 stars The Red Sunburst is a Pretty Little Thing!
This is my second one of the same model due to replacement of the first.Initial impressions:The unit was well-protected. Foam Bag on the instrument itself, placed in the nice included Gig Bag which was wrapped in a Plastic Bag, in a tough Cardboard Shipping Box, then inside the Bolo carton. Visibly the instrument appeared to be a "used" unit due to several visible minute scratches and rough edges of the peeling protective film over the pick guard. Further examination did not reveal any physical defects. Installed Strings appear to be new. Included items include a set of Four Picks, Digital Tuner, Cleaning/Polishing Cloth, Strap, Amp Cable, Owners Manual, and Chord Chart for the beginner, all stowed in the Orange Accessory Bag which fits in the Accessory Pouch of the Gig Bag. I noted that some slight adjustment of the String Action would be required, but the bridge appeared to have room to accomplish that. So far so good.Set Up:I checked the Tuning machines for looseness with a 10mm wrench. All good to go with no slop between the gears. With the Strings loose I applied Nut Sauce to the Nut Grooves and Half-Tuned the Strings, then adjusted the Bridge until I obtained at the 12th fret just under1.5mm clearance of the G String and just under 1.25mm clearance of the E String. Neck edges smooth with no sharp Frets, and all Frets level. Spent a couple days periodically Re-Tuning the Strings until the stretch was gone and correct Tuning held overnight. This morning the Action was still as set, and Intonation so close the Tuner showed no differences between Open Strings, Fretted Strings at the 12th, and Harmonics at the 12th.The Playability:I am a beginner Mando player, though I have been a guiterist for nearly 50 years. I find this unit very playable with good tone and surprisingly good sustain. And no buzzing! Tuning remains constant after an hour of play, so I felt it was time to check the Electronics using both Wired and Wireless Interfaces. The Pickup provides very acceptable volume as set. The Mando sounds just as good with or without amplification. Volume Control operates smoothly with no static or roughness, and amplitude rise and fall is smooth top to bottom/bottom to top. I'm unsure about the quality of the Tone Control, but for the $$$ it seems to be quite adequate. If necessary I can always EQ it via the Chain. All told I'm VERY satisfied with my purchase. I've looked and played several Mandos at the local Music Shops and find this unit to perform favorably against them. For the money you can't beat it. I highly recommend at least giving this a try first!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great mandolin
Amazing value, ready to play right out of the box! A+
5.0 out of 5 stars Great value
This is a great mandolin package for the price, I am new to mandolin. I am experienced with ukulele, so understand string instruments a little. This overall is truly a beautiful mandolin. My action was high, there are screws at the bridge to bring the action down, may need to sand the bridge to take it down more. The sound is very good and works well with my amp. There is no truss in the neck that allows changes. I did notice what I thought were scratches/marks on the pick guard and contacted the store through Bolo- kudos for very quick response - and I was told there is a thin layer of plastic (like saran wrap covering the pick guard- once removed, my pick guard was perfect (but I kind of wish I left it on for protection, lol, but needed to see if any damage under it). I saw mention of the mandolin strings not holding tune in other reviews- but if you have played stringed instruments in the past, you know that it could take a week or more (depending on how often you play) for the strings to stretch and hold tune. Right now after owning for over a week and playing daily, only the 4th string needs tuning, the other three are holding. Finally, there is also mention in other reviews that the tuner that comes with the mandolin does not have mandolin turning as a choice- that is true but you can find free phone apps for tuning mandolin, which I prefer anyway. This is not a big enough issue for me for the product to lose a star. Looks beautiful, sounds good, very awesome package for the price.
Great beginner mandolin and price is right for starting out
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } After reading other reviews I can confirm a few items to watch out for when you get this. It is a great value package for beginners but the initial setup may prove daunting to a beginner. Any new instrument, especially smaller ones, need time to break in and adjust. You wont be pulling this out of the box, tuning it up and playing perfect pitch the first day. It is a tedious setup process, but once setup you will enjoy this instrument for years to come. It comes pre strung but strings are loose for transport. As a test I tuned the strings that were pre installed and it sounded good enough. The included tuner works as expected but is not as easy to use as Snark or other known brands. I am a guitar player but have not played mandolin. Replacing strings here is no different on a mandolin than guitar but does take more patience and finesse to tune than a guitar. The included strings are not fancy but will tune properly with some patience. Get the mandolin tuned as close as possible and play it a bit. Yes it will sound off. Don't try to get it sounding perfect that first day. Set it aside for a day to 'rest' before coming back and fine tuning the strings again. On this second day you want to ensure the floating bridge is in the correct position. Mine had shifted slightly in travel resulting in the odd mismatched sound on the 1st fret. I verified the bridge placement by playing the (tuned) open strings one at a time followed by playing a 'harmonic' on the 12th fret for each string. (lightly touch but do not press down on the 12th fret then remove your finger so it rings out) Using the tuner, check that the open string matches the same tuning as the harmonic on the 12th fret. Take note of any strings that do not match then see what movement is needed on the bridge. Mine needed just the low string side of the bridge moved back barely a millimeter toward the tail (body) end to fix because my low string was out but high string was ok. Have to loosen the strings a bit so you can very carefully adjust the bridge. Want to be able to move it with some resistance but not too loose as too much movement and you will have to tune and start over. (This is the tedious part) Then tune it again and may have to repeat a few times until you get it right and all 4 sets of strings are tuned open and harmonically at the 12th fret.
Excellent value and quality
Very nice mandolin at a very good price. The nut was cut a bit high, but I plan to change the strings to a lighter gauge and will correct it then. Excellent finish and sound, very happy with the gig bag and extras.
De mi completo agrado
