I can watch Ms. Ronan in anything. Her initial musical audition is classic. The cinematographer achieves an ambitious palette, the sort all too often ignored in indy work, which is unfairly considered light on a cinema-level, perhaps because there are few explosions to admire. The look according to helmer Greta Gerwig mimics the fabric of memory -- now that is ambition I admire -- with a washed-off, remote, nonetheless color-saturated texture influenced by period specific "fanzines" pressed-off at Kinko's in those sweet days. It was also nice to see Sacremento photographed with love for a change, in a way that suggests all life does not die outside of NYC and LA, the problem of entirely too many films. These extra touches make the piece shine. Still, in watching it, with the realization that "The Breakfast Club" has now been collected by the Criterion Collection, (good for them for understanding film; even Eric Rohmer's "Pauline at the Beach" is merely a beach tale. I could not help but consider how a work, such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (consider the slowed-down art museum sequence) would have been a Best Picture / Director nominee today, now that American film is starting to better understand cinema. This, too, seems doubly the case when one considers Cameron's meltdown in the John Hughes work. Even "Some Kind of Wonderful" and "Lucas" wear well with age, especially now that multiplexes are dominated by the inane. This film is great. Do not get me wrong. And while standing beside those earlier giants alone bodes well. But I cannot give it a mere four stars for not living up to prior classics, or even the greater Gerwig-penned work, "Frances Ha," or "Miss America," both of which I adore - ADORE. I cannot take away a star, especially in today's film atmosphere, so saturated with spectacle over character. There is something intentionally minor about the work which could, at points, swing for the fences just a bit more, as in the sequence near the close of the film in which Lady Bird visits a church and re-adopts her name - on her terms. BRAVO.

The acting is top-notch, the direction and writing is brilliant, and it all comes together in a sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad, sometimes poignant teenage coming of age story led magnificently by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. This is Greta Gerwig at her best.

If you are looking for perfection in a coming of age film, look no further. This film is beautiful, hilarious, heartbreaking, and nostalgic all in the most wonderful ways of those words. It manages to take a simple act ( a young lady graduating high school and heading to college) and turn it into a meaningful glimpse at young life and reflection on the relationships we form or force to form and how they affect our lives and spirit. I can’t say enough good things about this film. Great Gerwig has managed to make her first act into her masterpiece. It truly is a phenomenal film which should remain timeless and inspire many future generations to not be afaraid to take the little things of life and turn them into big meaningful artistic endeavors.

('Lady Bird') In the neat and charismatic household of the MacPhersons there are ancient traditions which intrude into the reigning dynasty of casual culture. Christine(Saoirse [pr.surshah] Ronan), or Lady Bird, as she likes to be called, is disciplined by her mother about her messy room. Lady Bird's mother(Laurie Metcalf) scolds: "Some of your friend's fathers could employ your father-and they're not going to do it if it looks like your family is trash."As we go through various social and intramural segments of Lady Bird's school and drama-theater curriculum, Lady Bird courses through a tunnel and we are witness to her various choices; although the tension mounts on some decisions tentatively, Lady Bird never travels outside the walls. Lady Bird(aka Christine) is a senior at a Sacramento high school. The elegant architecture, and wane sunlit grass plots of land look artful - add to this the theme of reckless rebellion, saturated with a matte gloss of spring colors, and 'Lady Bird' attains a class aura and intensity like many of the instrumentals that serenade the various frictions of communication.Like a diary that's different in writing alacrity when it defines favoured impressions, in 'Lady Bird' etchings discern themselves from trajectory scenes. Observations of teenage insensitivity and trends of the parents; of disparagement, love, then the unresponsiveness of each person to the declining reasonableness of the other. A revolution is brewing, of the attitudes of youth to their upbringings, but these new thinkers invoke high ideals amongst each other. The fantasy, and an absorbing one it is, in 'Lady Bird', is in the interactions. An argument becomes a fight, then over the edge the emotions go-but these faithless people just stare at one another-and so what? Just when you think the movie is about to become something less than what it promises, the mood foists on to Saoirse(playing Lady Bird), and the scene turns, pensive or foreboding, in her pirouette of defining articulations. Irish Catholic traditions are sanguine and begrudging, but it's love when it really counts. Not all the story lines are tied-up consummately, in the end, but 'Lady Bird' is a work of art.The piano piece for the end credits, 'Lady Bird-Ending Credit' composed by Jon Brion is a gorgeous instrumental.

Ihr Leben hat sich 17 Jahre lang in Sacramento abgespielt. Nun will sie da raus. Jetzt. Und weil jetzt nicht geht und damit alles zu lange dauert, rebelliert sie gegen alles und jeden und bei ihrem Namen fängt es an. Sie heißt Christine. Aber sie besteht verbissen darauf, "Lady Bird" genannt zu werden. Sie will raus aus der Stadt im mittleren Kalifornien (an der Westküste scheint San Francisco der einzig akzeptable Ort zu sein). Die Ostküste soll es sein, und natürlich soll es eine Elite-Uni werden. Allerdings ist das illusorisch. Ihre Noten sind gut, aber nicht so gut, dass es für solch eine Uni reicht. Zudem müsste sie so gut sein, dass sie ein Stipendium bekommen könnte, denn ihr Vater verliert gerade seinen Job und ihre Mutter versucht mit Doppelschichten als Krankenschwester, genug Geld zusammenbekommen zu können.Das Geld. Lady Bird würde so gern in einer wohlhabenden Familie und deren Haus wohnen. Ihr erster Versuch lässt sich prima an. Die Großmutter ihres ersten Freundes bewohnt ihr Traumhaus, aber ihr Freund trägt seine eigene Last und kann ihren Erwartungen nicht gerecht werden. Ihr zweiter Freund ist smart und blasiert, nahezu des Lebens überdrüssig, aber er hat alles, was das Leben so hergeben kann. Auch dies wird sich als Zwischenetappe erweisen, genauso wie die gesamte Clique, die sich am finanziell gut gestellten Ende des Schulskala gesammelt hat.Ihre Mutter kämpft auf ihrer finanziellen Seite um die Existenz der Familie und sie kämpft um den Zugang zu ihrer Tochter, einem Papa-Kind. Kunststück, der würde alles für seine Tochter tun, leider reichen seine Mittel dafür nicht. Ständig kracht es zwischen Mutter und Tochter. Sie finden nicht die richtigen Worte und Lösungen für die Wünsche und die Mittel, die Lady Bird einsetzt, um ihren Willen durchzusetzen.Alles ist blöd. Alles ist langweilig. Sie will nicht länger bieder sein. Sie will Status. Sie will da raus.Das ist natürlich kein neues Setting für einen Film, doch hier wird es sehr gekonnt und vor allen Dingen sehr lebendig umgesetzt. Die Schauspieler liefern eine großartige Leistung. Der Film kann sich sehr gut sehen lassen.

Film simpatico, come si usa nel cinema d'oggi. Un gioiellino.Attrice favolosa, madre come non si vedeva da Gente comune. Se avete amato Timothee in Chiamami col tuo nome amatelo cosi' e non come lo stronzetto che e' in questo film. Con Chiamami col tuo nome e Tre manifesti ad Ebbing Missouri una tripletta da favola, avrebbero meritato molti Oscar in piu'. Orgoglioso di averlo. Lo consiglio caldamente a chi ha figli/e neo diciottenni. Ascoltateli ed amateli. Bolo come sempre puntuale. Film assolutamente da avere.

"Lady Bird" ist ein sehr stimmiger Coming of Age Beitrag, der es bei der Oscarwahl 2018 auf fünf Nominierugen brachte. Die Hauptdarstellerin Saoirse Ronan schaffte es damit zum dritten Mal für einen Oscar nominiert zu werden. Als beste Nebendarstellerin ging sie bereits 2008 mit "Abbitte" ins Rennen. Im letzten Jahr schaffte sie es erneut mit "Brooklyn - Eine Liebe zwischen zwei Welten" - diesmal in der Kategoriei Hauptdarstellerin. Bisher ging die irischstämmige Aktrice leer aus, aber man hat das Gefühl, dass sie ihre beste Zeit noch vor sich haben könnte.Genauso überzeugend ist auch Laurie Metcalf als Mutter von Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson. Auch sie wurde mit einer Nominierung belohnt. Ebenso erfolgreich lief es in den Kategorien "Bester Film", beste Regie und bestes Originaldrehbuch - beide Male Greta Gerwig.Die Filmemacherin hat ihren Independent Film auch selbst produziert.Obwohl das Drehbuch zahlreiche Elemente ihrer eigenen Jugend aufgreift, möchte Greta Gerwig ihren Film "Lady Bird" nicht als autobiographisches Werk verstanden wissen.Ein bisschen erinnert ihr etwas vor sich hinplätschender Film mit lauter kleinen Episoden an "Edge of Seventeen" von Kelly Freemon Craig aus dem Jahr 2016, der ebenfalls sehr viele gute Kritiken erhielt. Der Unterschied beider Filme liegt vielleicht in der Wirkung - während Craigs Film ausgelassener und lockerer wirkt, ist "Lady Bird" weitaus melancholischer und setzt auch auf eine Menge poetischer Anteile im Sinne von "Erwachsen werden ist nichts für Weicheier".Saoirse Ronan haucht ihrer Figur eine Menge Seele ein, sie trägt den Film. Unterstützt wird sie von einem famosen Ensemble. Die beiden männlichen Jungstars Thimothee Chalamet und Lucas Hedges sind beide schon für andere Rollen mit einer Oscar-Nominierung bedacht worden. Auch Tracy Letts und Laurie Metcalf als Eltern überzeugen auf ganzer Linie. Lois Smith als Schwester Sarah Joan, Beanie Feldstein und Odeya Rush als Christines Freundin oder Stephen Henderson als Priester bleiben positiv in Erinnerung.Ein kleiner, aber feiner Film und der Zuschauer bekommt einen Einblick in eine katholische Highschool in Sacramento. Dort legt man Wert auf Disziplin, auf Fleiß und Ordnung. Nur für Christine, die möchte, dass man sie "Lady Bird" nennt, hat genug von dieser etwas beengten Welt. Sie würde gerne ihre Heimatstadt verlassen und an der US-Ostküste studieren, dort soll alles moderner und gelassener ablaufen. Sie liebt ihre Mutter, hat aber mit ihr ständige Konflikte. Denn Marion McPherson (Laurie Metcalf) ist eine genauso starke Persönlichkeit wie ihre aufmüpfige, manchmal etwas rebellsiche Tochter und hat darüberhinaus einen harten Job im Krankenhaus.Zur Familie gehört auch der etwas stillere Vater und Christines Adoptivbruder Miguel (Jordan Rodriguez).In der Theatergruppe ihrer Schule lernt sie den etwas schüchternen Danny O'Neill (Lucas Hedges) kennen und verliebt sich in ihn. Aber auch der etwas wildere Kyle Scheible (Thimothee Chalamet), Gitarrist in einer Indieband, könnte ihr gefallen. Ansonsten hängt sie meistens mit ihrer Freundin Julie (Beanie Feldstein) rum und ist etwas eifersüchtig auf die hübsche Jenny Walton (Odeya Rush), denn deren Eltern sind um einiges vermögender als Christines Eltern..."Lady Bird" ist ein interessanter Beitrag des Coming of Age Bereichs, denn der Film bietet auch ein Stück weit realistisches Leben mit echten Typen. Ein großer Vorteil dieser Geschichte im Mosaik-Style, denn erst die vielen kleinen Epsioden fügen sich am Ende dann zum großen Ganzen und dort kommt dann auch das Plädoyer für die Indiviualisten, für die Aussenseiter voll zum Tragen. Auch besinnt sich die Hauptfigur wieder auf ihre wirklichen Bedürfnisse, nachdem sie es vorher ein bisschen ausprobiert hat wie es ist eine andere zu sein. So kehrt sie am Ende zu ihrer besten Freundin zurück und erkennt auch in den Konflikten mit ihrer Mutter die starke Bindung und Liebe, die sie mit ihr verbindet. "Lady bird" bezeichnet im Englischen auch einen Marienkäfer, was gut zur Geschichte passt. Denn wie dieser putzigen Insekten mit den schwarzen Punkten auf dem roten Panzer hat Christine den Drang einfach mal wegzufliegen. Natürlich ist der Marienkäfer auch immer wieder ein echter Glücksbringer, wie man sagt - damit steht fest, dass die Haupfigur sich selbst auch das beste für die Zukunft wünscht, wenn aus dem Mädchen irgendwann die Frau wird. Ein kleiner, aber feiner Film.Zwischen 4 und 5 Sternen.
