5.0 out of 5 stars Six things you should know

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I try to stay away from reviewing movies or music albums because there is no agreed upon method people use to rate them. Some people look at the overall performance while others critique the individual performers or directors or other roles in the credits. Then there are those who focus their attention on the quality of the disk pressing, or if the case is cracked or the cover artwork or something about the seller. I’m just going to take a casual birds eye look at my overall experience with this product.1. I suddenly decided I wanted this disk one day when a friend mentioned the festival. Both of us lived in Monterey at one time in our early lives but that was several years after the festival. I was aware of it back then because the company I worked for did some of the sound and lighting for it. I have seen small segments of the performances but never anything about the entire event. So I was interested.2. I almost didn’t buy it because there are two nearly identical pages but one’s pricing is substantially more for the same thing. Since you landed on this page, congratulations, you got the better deal.3. Being in the business of making TV and movies myself I know the reality that you can’t take film that’s over fifty years old and make it look or sound as good as something made today. The efforts to enhance old film and soundtracks are far better now that in the early days of digital processing but personally I think making a Blu-Ray of something that old is useless. My preference would be to see and hear it exactly as it was recorded back then. But I bought the Blu-Ray anyway, thankfully you can turn off the multi-channel sound and revert to a simple stereo track.4. I may differ from others on my opinion of what this product is but I understand it to be a documentary. Such movies about music and musicians never include full songs in their original order, that’s not the purpose of a documentary. I’m not on the same page as those who expected it to be an album of the full concert with every set and every song in its full and uncut originality. If that’s what you want this movie isn’t for you.5. There’s some other misinformation I’ve seen, like five minutes of ads with no cancel button. I believe they are reviewing a different product, the disk starts with the typical movie menu and when you select play the movie starts immediately.6. I think I saw something about the case being unusual and the disk being difficult to remove without breaking it. Yes the case doesn’t have indentations for your fingertip but all you have to do to remove the disk is to press on the button in the spindle hole. It pops right out.As a movie that includes a gathering of performers that will never again be repeated with performances that are truly legendary the film is entertaining and for those way too young to have experienced that era who want more, there are full complete collections and albums available. For the low price of this set I think it was an enjoyable movie night and worth owning a physical copy. It seems such things are becoming rare these days.

Early hippie era, summer of love, during the Airplane Coming Back To Me the camera man was infatuated with Grace Slick and refused to take the camera off her even though Marty Balin (RIP) was singing the song, funny, but Marty didn’t think so

Ignoring the overly sexualized cover that just looks creepy, it's an ok dvd. Nicely put together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile upgrede to the original release

D. · January 5, 2018

I own the original Blu-ray release of this film. I read about this remaster and decided to upgrade. It was worth the price of upgrade.I compared several scenes, especially the more problematic night scenes with Otis Redding. The newer version is noticeably sharper with better dynamic range. Black levels are also better. The audio is taken from the same source as the earlier version and is excellent, especially for a film this old.The film is a wonderful capture of the festival. If you want to understand '60's music, you need three films: The T.A.M.I. Show, Monterey Pop and Woodstock. Monterey Pop is the most idealistic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important event in American musical history.

A.C. · December 8, 2018

In 1967, the performers at this event were significant for their cultural and ethnic diversity plus being a collection emerging talents that would influence music for generations to come. This would include Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, and The Jefferson Airplane to name a few. The final song, which was performed by Indian artist Ravi Shankar on the Sitar, is one of the most amazing musical pieces you will ever hear. Finally, the success of this concert was undoubtedly part of what inspired the people who sponsored Woodstock. Everyone knows about that show, but this one came first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories...

s. · June 25, 2022

Great video/audio of a time that is very much missed (at least by me). Text on the case says video is restored in 4K, not so. 1080P/24. Great sound both on the 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and the uncompressed stereo soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars fond memories of the past.

A.J.P. · February 4, 2018

This Documentary is just like I remembered it from a previously released Sony version however, because of the Blu-ray, the image is a lot sharper. i was fourteen years old during this concert and i remember the rave reviews of the original concert from my piers who were lucky enough to go to it. i have watch this over and over again and it is one of my favorites especially during the performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Mamas and the Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar.

il prodotto viene tuttora elencato come "germania" ma non può funzionare in europa.

I love the music

Un grand festival

L.B. · July 29, 2024

Le film décrit le festival pop de Monterey de 1967 et montre plusieurs images inédites. On peut y voir les prestations de Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas and the Papas, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Otis Redding, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, etc. Des noms plus que mythiques. Bien sur, Monterey Pop n'a pas l'aura qu'aura le film sur le festival de Woodstock en 1969 mais il vaut quant même la peine d'être vue.

Unbelievable performances

V.i.V. · November 23, 2023

Hendrix and Joplin are AMAZING!!! This concert is Rock music at its finest!!! I am so glad I bought this. If you like classic rock or music in general, this is a must have. The Blue Ray is way better then when I first saw this film back in the day. I have my Yamaha surround set up so it picked up the DTS 5.1 surround sound and that was the magic I wanted.
