Description:
"Ruby" is a horror film with the emphasis on atmosphere and suspense, but it also contains enough creepy special effects and blood and gore to satisfy the most demanding genre fans. Most of it takes place at night, with all kinds of marvelous influences lurking in the shadows. Directed by cult-film director Curtis Harrington (Night Tide, Queen of Blood, Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, Games, What's the Matter with Helen? Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? The Killing Kind) and featuring an impressive cast including Piper Laurie, fresh from her starring role in Carrie, 1976, as Ruby, and Stuart Whitman (Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, 1965). The movie begins in 1935, Ruby Clair, beautiful hostess of a Florida gambling house, watches in horror as her gangster boyfriend is gunned down, his bullet-riddled body sinking slowly into a dark, foggy bayou. That same night Ruby's baby is born. Fast forward to 1951. Ruby now owns a drive-in movie operated by a crew of ex-convicts she has befriended. Her beautiful daughter has never uttered a sound since she was born. One by one her theater employees are savagely murdered. Could it be the work of a rival criminal settling an old score? Or could it be an evil wreaking vengeance from beyond the grave? A psychologist from the state prison tries to find out - and what he discovers is not for the squeamish. This special BD/DVD combo is the definitive original theatrical version of Ruby, with a 2K restoration, 2 commentary tracks and over 2 hours of video interviews and special features!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruby

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again the veterans save the day
What could've been a run of the mill supernatural rip-off of multitudes of movies during this era, has been saved from veteran actors needing a paycheck. Stuart Whitman is just great in all his stoicism. Oh my dear Piper Laurie, what a great actress, she could hypnotize me acting out a scene of her watching paint dry. A hammy piece of sleaze is sometimes all we're asking for...I'll always think twice whenever I get a soda out of the truck stop machines!
1.0 out of 5 stars "Ruby" Is No Gem
A cheap, derivative, poorly written, poorly directed little horror film. The only thing it succeeds at is totally wasting two Academy Award nominees - Piper Laurie and Stuart Whitman, as well as a very good turn by Roger Davis. Though this is set in 1951, the majority of the generally terrible supporting cast's clothes and especially hair is either late 50's/early 60's or just straight out 1977. The major compounding of stupidity is that film's "drive-in" is showing "Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman" which was released in 1959. Sadly, not enjoyably bad.......just stupidly bad.
5.0 out of 5 stars Ruby runs blood red !!!.
A great horror film from 1977. After a great performance in her role in Carrie, Piper Laurie excels in her role as the mother of a possessed deaf daughter. I feel sorry for Piper Laurie. Having one daughter with tele kinetic powers and one possessed must have a strain on one. No wonder she seemed happy to die in both films!!.
3.0 out of 5 stars 70s Drive-in Nostalgia But With Audio Issues!
Classic drive-in movie from the 70s. Low budget, but atmospheric and fun. Problem is the audio in the streaming version is terrible. It is out of sync throughout most the movie and in several spots it becomes distorted or muffled. I tried pausing, rewinding, fast-forwarding, even uninstalling and reinstalling the app with no success. All other videos are fine so it must be an issue with just this movie.
4.0 out of 5 stars A great 70's horror film
One of the better supernatural horror films to come out of the '70s, thanks to finely tuned direction by the late Curtis Harrington and some great sequences that takes place at a drive-in. Why this film doesn't get the love it deserves is totally beyond me. If you have never seen it, I advise you buy the DVD. It looks flawless, the best it has looked on DVD in any version released for the home video market.
