Other reviewers have more experience, so I defer to them for details of effectiveness. By the way, the thickness of the tube is ~the same as a cigar tube, and it is 5.5" in length. The instructions advise placing it in the center of the humidor.There is perhaps some understandable confusion because the instructions could be written better, and that is why a few reviewers had problems with leaking: "Some evaporation may occur while sitting on the shelf. Remove wrapper. Add plain tap water to the Fill line. Put perforated cap on tube and wait for water to be absorbed. . . . A mixture of Propylene Glycol and water has been specially formulated and initially charged into the crystals."When you receive the Drymistat, pop the cap and take out a crystal. You'll notice it is moist. This is the "initial charge" referred to, and the amount of moisture will depend upon, as the instructions say, how long the item has been sitting in inventory. The instructions mention that the tube has microscopic pores which permit moisture to pass thru; this is why there can be evaporation. All that's required is to add a small amount of water - if necessary - to the fill line and then leave the tube upright with the second perforated cap on, until that water is absorbed by the crystals, which is pretty quickly. Turn the tube upside down and gently shake it or very gently squeeze it, and any excess water will come out. Now place in humidor and there won't be any leaking. The crystals will shrink as the water transfers to your absorbent cigars or whatever. Refill when crystals shrink below the lower line on the tube. That's all there is to it.

This stuff works like a charm. Your humidor has to be seasoned first and these things will keep the relative humidity between 65-70%. I will be using these passive humidifiers as a back up to my active humidifier, i.e., the Le Veil DCH-12V1 Auto Digital Cigar Humidifier in my larger Prestige Glass Top Cigar Humidor which matches (in style and color) my smaller The Elegant 25-50 Cigar Glass Top Humidor which only has these passive tubes in it. These drymistat tubes will last at least 10 years if you re-charge them with 25% PG solution in 100% distilled water (as opposed to re-charging with either tap water or 100% distilled water). If you use regular tap water you will discolor and contaminate the crystals and shorten the life of the tube to a year or less, AND on the other hand, if you re-charge with ONLY distilled water you won't get the tightly controlled relative humidity you need for cigars (65-70% RH) since the PG will eventually break down into water and carbon dioxide resulting in only water in the crystals (in the tubes) resulting in an inability of the drymistat tube to re-absorb water from the air when needed. Anyone complaining about leakage of the tubes doesn't know how to follow directions and anyone complaining about not keeping the correct relative humidity level doesn't know how to season and/or seal up a leaky humidor.

I am by no means a cigar connoisseur or a cigar master. I honestly don't even have a hydrometer.This tube works wonders for my humidor of about 20 cigars. The cigars stay soft and don't dry out, they still smell good and fresh.After unwrapping all you have to do is1) take off the plastic cap2) fill with water up to the line (some folks only used distilled water)3) put on the cap with holes4) let it rest for a minute or so (so the crystals can absorb the water)5) and viola you put it in the humidor and enjoy fresh cigars!I noticed that I need to refill the tube about once a month. Then after 2 years or so I just get a new one.this has no odor and the crystals wont hurt you if accidentally spilled.I took away 1 star because sometimes it takes some time for the crystals to absorb the water, otherwise there are no negatives.So if you are a beginner, or don't feel like messing with hydrometers and thermometers and whatever else, this tube will be a great purchase. I have friends who have 50 cigar humidors and they use 2 of these and say it works very well.Cheers and happy puffing!!

Does exactly as it says- keeps a constant humidity. I've been using it for about a month now with 0 problems. My hygrometer keeps a 24 hour memory of the highs and lows in humidity and temperature, and in my 20 cigar coolidor the humidity never varies more than 1% (assuming I kept the lid shut). Even if I leave the lid open a while, within 20 minutes it will bounce back to the proper humidity. My hygrometer always reads 68%,69%,or 70%, depending on what I've added, what the outside humidity is, etc. but I'd believe the meter could be less accurate than the humidifier tube. Either way, I'll definitely buy more as I expand my collection. I love that I can keep it right next to cigars in the humidor because there is no chance of physical contact between the gel and the cigars, the vented test tube style humidifier looks and fits great. A month in there is no sign I'll need to recharge it soon (it came charged, but tells you when it needs it and is very simple). Would recommend for a small Tupper-dor, herfador, travel humidor, or coolidor, or you could probably use a couple in a larger humidor.
