There are two schools of thought on transmission fluid. One is to use only factory, or OEM, fluid. The other is to use one of the current and readily available multi-use synthetic fluids. The problem with the latter in my case is Ford does not recommend their Mercon LV (for low viscosity) as a replacement for Mercon V (for 5). Also, neither does Ford recommend Mercon V as a replacement for Mercon LV. My conclusion is Ford has a reason for this. In the case of Mercon V it did replace Mercon and this is found in service and technical bulletins. But again, Mercon LV has not been specified by Ford to replace Mercon V. My concern is that although I would prefer to use a full synthetic I am reluctant to risk an expensive transmission on a fluid being both a "regular" viscosity and a low viscosity simultaneously. I am leery of "suitable for" and "recommended for" on labels. Suitable for says who and recommended by whom? The fluid manufacturer but not the transmission manufacturer? Engine oil that is, for example, 0W-20 is not a replacement where 10W-30 or 15W-40 is specified. When a label has "approved by" the transmission manufacturer (not the fluid manufacturer) or better yet "licensed by" the transmission manufacturer and has the license number on the label, then I trust it. This is only my opinion but it is based on the opinion of some top notch automotive technician teachers and instructors. For these reasons I bough this Mercon V. I did consider a one size fits all miracle juice until I read some reviews of it. There was sludge in the bottom of one buyer's jug of new fluid and two other buyers found metal shards in their new fluid. I'll err on the side of caution. This Mercon V was my best and safest bet.

I recommend drain and fill. typically you only get like 40% on a drain and fill but do your first at like 50 thousand and a second drain and fill in a year or 15 thousand miles. I actually have transmission temp guage on my mustang and noticed an average 0f 20 degrees lower temps as well as it takes a bit longer to even get to 180 or 190 degrees. I changed the Filter too and cleaned the pan and magnet. Well worth the preventive maintance. Time and heat will kill your trans fluid. If over 5 or 6 years Its time to change it...
