I own this machine myself. I bought it as a bridal gift because it has been such a workhorse for me. The bride is just learning how to sew and will need this. I have referred this machine to my sewing students as well.

I learned how to sew in Jr. Hi., many years ago, in the days when most of us girls made many of our own clothes. Today, fabric and patterns are so expensive that it's not practical, anymore. These days, most of my sewing is mending, altering or refashioning, so I don't really need a very expensive fancy machine. My computerized Singer One broke and having it repaired is so costly that replacing it made more sense. This is my first Brother machine and I must say, I'm impressed, I received the machine yesterday, opened and set it up today,to ensure that everything worked. There will be a bit of a learning curve to use the needle threader, etc. but, thus far, I'm very pleased with my choice.

Love this machine! Had to replace the "J" foot to an older style, but that's just preference. Very easy to handle.
