(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I just rescued 4 pair of black jeans with RIT dye and the dye fixative. I've used Rit dye a few times now and I'm happy with the results I've seen each time. My jeans were all about 4 years old and 3 were just evenly faded after repeated washings while the 3rd pair wasn't that faded but for some reason one knee was weirdly faded more than the rest of the pants. Other than the color all 4 pair of jeans were in good condition with hardly any wear. After dying them, they all look like new.The only caveat I'd like to bring to people's attention is that this is not some 15 minute process. It took me about 3 hours to go through...........1.) The dye process2.) A rinse process3.) The dye fixative process4.) Another rinse process5.) And finally a quick wash cycle to get rid of the excess dye that hadn't bonded to the fabric.I did it outside using the pot method. Actually a galvanized steel tub that was big enough to dye everything at once. You'll need to fill the container with water at least 140 deg F. I used a combination of tap water (about 120 deg F) and water I boiled on the stove to get the temp of the water to the desired level. You'll also need to add a cup of table salt to the hot water and a tablespoon of liquid dish soap before you dump in the dye. I'm no dye chemist but I'm assuming the soap is used as a surfactant to help carry the dye into the fabric and the salt (Sodium Chloride NaCl) must be facilitating the chemical bonding of the dye to the fabric as NaCl is a highly reactive chemical. So just be aware, to do it right you're gonna kill off the better part of a Saturday afternoon. But it is sort of fun and your clothes will look like new.Full disclosure, I've only done this with blue or black denim so, dark colors. I've never tried cotton dress shirts or t-shirts and no lighter colors so, I don't know how that stuff would work.
5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good.
It is too early to give it a real legit rating but so far so good.I have been waiting at least 8 months for Nautica Men's Relaxed Fit 5 Pocket 100% Cotton Denim Jean Short to RESHOCK but holy shoot it never did.I just like the quality of the denim. It feels premium instead of just a thin paper feeling you get from other denim shorts. Anyhow, I decided I am just going to dye it myself and have it restore. The dying was very simple to do, It dyed the shorts to its color, it isnt jett black which I wanted but it is the color of the mixture of water to dye ratio.I did not wash it yet and time will tell how long the dye will last.So far it dyed the denim black. How long will it last ? First wash ? 2nd wash ? 3rd wash ? who knows. Will edit if the dye doesnt last at least 10 washes.
5.0 out of 5 stars Black Rit Dye
I found a suspicious "bleach looking" stain on a favorite velour top. The instructions said it may not cover bleach stains but it DID! While I was at it I threw in an old pair of black faded jeans and a pair of black faded shorts. All three came out great. Note: I dyed them in a Lowes plastic bucket in the back yard stirring constantly with an old broom pole for 1 hour. This is not for the faint or sloppy. I have a new washer and was not going to dye in it. Rinsing till clear is another not fun task. I went to the chiropractor later in the week after this.
4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing how you can recover old jeans with this dye
Amazing how you can recover old jeans with this dye. I dumped hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and used this. It looked okay for the first wear. Then washed it and now it is looking more and more blotchy. I also used retayne to reduce fade. Amazingly the dye has not bled into anything. So this is good newsI think the best method is to:1. First thoroughly clean and wash the fabric. You may use dye remover to remove dye to achieve a more accurate color. For jeans, it may help to use a brush\scrub them by hand and then put them through the wash.2. use some fabric softerner and detergent mixed with salt, hot water, and the dye. and placed in a flat basin to lay the fabric flat. The detergent and fabric softener should reduce the surface tension of the jeans such that the dye is more readily and evenly absorbed, and should help to counter act the shrinking effect of hot water. You need hot water for the dye to be absorbed as well. Then let it soak for an hour or more, mixing\rotating often. Then you drain and wash out the extra dye. Add retayne in a bucket of water and let the pants sit in that for some time. Then wash in a cold cycle. let it hang dry\dry in low heat. This should give the best results.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great dye!
To preface the picture: these are the exact same pants in color, cut, and style. They are my favorite jeans, but I wanted one of them to be black, so I can wear them to work. That's where Rit came into the equation. I researched how to dye denim, and Rit was mentioned the most in tutorials. As you can see, it worked out amazingly! I was shocked how well the dye penetrated the denim. Also, it's interesting that it only dyed the denim and not the stitching. Evidently, the stitching is a different material and didn't absorb the dye thus making it look like it was manufactured that way. Very cool! Highly recommended!
1.0 out of 5 stars Not very black
It does not get your clothes very black but will make the color look more uniform at best
3.0 out of 5 stars Color does not stick.
Color does not stick' NOTE i followed all the direction...
5.0 out of 5 stars Works great
My daughter wanted several of her blue jeans black and this did a great job. It's been months ago and tons of washes later and the color has completely held up. We did the project outside in a big tote bringing hot water out one large pot at a time and she stirred with a stick then we used the horses and a hose to rinse off, it was like a witch brewing🤣. Fun and effective.
Good 👍🏻

Revived my black jeans!
Worked as expected, 1 bottle is good for 2 pair of black jeans. Came back like a brand new crisp pair. Would recommend for sure.
Don't know if this is how it should work
It ok but the color is not permanent at least it should stay for 3 months but at 6th wash ..It's restored itself .Seems like we always need to repeat the process after 6th wash.Compared at this price its of no use.
Five Stars
Needed this to dye back my 10 pair of Black Levi's
