Description:
Collecting the straightest "blues" songs Jimi recorded, the emphasis here is on tradition rather than any type of LSD-fueled astral travel. Blues affords fans a good look at the way Hendrix was able to work without gimmicks, expanding the boundaries of blues music at even his most unflashy (esp. The acoustic "Hear My Train A-Comin'" that opens the album).

5.0 out of 5 stars Jimmy at his finest, a must listen
If you’re a Hendrix fan, this album deserves your attention! Mellow to rocking and songs I’d never heard!
5.0 out of 5 stars Alan Douglas was a genius
I bought the original 1994 pressing second hand because I didn't want to buy the Janie Hendrix copy. Janie Hendrix is only in it for the money and not to do Jimi's music justice. This is exemplified by two things. Janie Hendrix releases Jimi's demos and has not re-released the Alan Douglas era albums except Blues. The reason Blues got re-release under Experience Hendrix is because Blues is one of the best sellers.Alan Douglas worked with Jimi and guided him to explore new types of music in the latter years of his life. All of the posthumous albums produced by Douglas served Jimi's music justice. Douglas knew Jimi well and knew what he would've released. Jimi would never have released any unfinished work because he was a perfectionist. Douglas presented finished albums. These were endorsed even by Mitch Mitchell.Blues is a great album and shows that Jimi was a blues man after all. Alan made a great album out of the recordings left by Jimi.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hendrix shows depth of talent
This really shows another side of Hendrix! Notes are interesting too; I didn't know Red House was left off Experienced album--what a drag!
4.0 out of 5 stars Have Guitar Will Travel
Out of the albums which have the fingerprints from producer Alan Douglas all over the liner notes, this release near the end of his romp through the Jimi Hendrix vault of tapes actually makes sense. With the 1970s bringing a good dose of pop culture nostalgia to the stage, screen and vinyl -- "Grease", "America Graffiti", "Happy Days", "41 Original Hits from the Soundtrack of American Graffiti", "Pin Ups" by David Bowie, "Rock 'n' Roll" by John Lennon, Capitol Records releasing the "Endless Summer" compilation of hits from the Beach Boys, the covers on "15 Big Ones" by the Beach Boys -- it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Hendrix would have recorded an album to salute the legendary blues artists which helped shape his sound.Compiled by Bruce Gary, drummer for The Knack and ace session musician, the 11 tracks feature six that were previously unreleased and the remainder not as readily available (in 1994) to the general public due to albums bouncing in-and-out-of-print. And even where Douglas does a slice and dice to create "Voodoo Chile Blues", the final product is a cool jam. The instrumental rendition of "Born Under a Bad Sign" is jaw-dropping filthy. The presentation is wrapped around "Hear My Train a Comin'"; an acoustic version to kick things off and an extended live electric jam as the closer.Instead of trying to convince everyone with ears glued to FM radio that he was a mystical Svengali who could channel the ghost of Hendrix by twisting a nob on the mixing board and erasing musicians on master tapes with Nixonian glee, Douglas allows the music to do the talking.....You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover, indeed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hear My Train A Comin'
Blues was originally released in late April 1994 and was one of the last releases with Alan Douglas in charge. The album opens with the acoustic Hear My Train A Comin' that appears in the 1973 movie Jimi Hendrix and ends with the electric version from the soundtrack to Rainbow Bridge. In between, there's a great instrumental version of Born Under A Bad Sign. Voodoo Chile Blues is edited together from two different takes during the Electric Ladyland sessions when the song Voodoo Chile was being worked on. Steve Winwood and Jack Casady both play on the song. The version of Catfish Blues on here was recorded for a Dutch tv show in November 1967. Jam 292 has a cool swing to it and Electric Church Red House features the original Experience with Lee Michaels sitting in. There isn't a bad moment on this cd and the performances are all top notch. If you keep your eye out, like I did, there's also a version of this that comes with a 30 minute documentary called the Blues. Look around for the cd/dvd combo from like 2010.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hiding in plain sight: Hendrix
Bolo has been the source of lost songs and new jewels since the early 2000’s. I just discovered both in a 2014 Sony release of Jimi’s ‘:BLUES’. The familiar and the unique, tighter, without an overpowering sound bring out his roots in the blues. A great booklet that is easy to understand enhances the why’s and how’s of this experience without getting bogged down in details. I waited almost a decade to hear these cuts from 50-some years ago. And I always knew that Hendrix was a blues man. Definitely recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good
Good cd my husband love it
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album Exposing Hendrix Playing The Blues
Forget all the hippie-dippy stuff you've read about. The drugs, women etc. This dude was a hard-worker, a perfectionist who drove himself, his bands, producers etc. to make great music. He was a blues traveler. He called it electric blues, absorbing all that came before and transforming it to a new form. Brilliant.Get this album. It unlocks the key to the core of who Jimi was. The rest of his music will make more sense to you after you digest this album. A well-packaged blues assault on your senses! Enjoy!

I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite. This comes in a close second probably only ...
Between “People, Hell and Angels” and this book; I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite. This comes in a close second probably only because I’ve spent more time with “People, Hell and Angels”. The amount of pure guitar gold techniques in this book is worth it alone. This album is really Jimi at his best and this book is a faithful, top shelf transcription. I’d be content to have this (or People, Hell and Angels) as my only transcribed music book.
