5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent unit for Kaleidescape

    p. · May 8, 2025

If you are a Kaleidescape owner and want to start the process of checking which of your DVD or Blu-ray's you can buy for less via the digital offers, this unit is for you. Works flawlessly. The unit does come with a power supply cable, so you don't have to buy one. using it is fairly easy. Just put the disc in, it gets read, and then the drawer opens waiting for your next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snappy, pretty quiet, durable

    a. · October 12, 2014

This is a really high quality build that plays Bluray video quickly. The included Cyberlink software is very out of date, so you have to buy an upgrade, but the upgrade is cheaper than buying a retail license, so you save some money that way if you need Bluray player software.Works great over USB 3.0 -- my previous external Bluray player only supported USB 2.0, and it took ages to start buffering the video playback. This one is much snappier thanks to the greater throughput. The physical dimensions are of course quite large, but this is understandable: it takes technology a while to miniaturize. Since BDXL writing is state of the art right now, there are no slim form factor drives that can do everything this drive does, and as fast as this drive does it. If you were looking for a slim form factor device that isn't the size of a laptop and doesn't require external power, look elsewhere, but be aware that it will be slower and less capable. That is the tradeoff you must evaluate when buying an optical drive. The unit is solid and seems difficult to break, unless you dropped it out a window on concrete or something. The hard plastic shell feels like something you would expect out of a decent laptop build. You can definitely hear some noise when the disc starts spinning up and seeking, but once the drive is streaming your video or burning your disc, it's basically silent. You won't have to worry about hearing this drive over your movie, that's for sure. During playback, all you'll hear is the whirring of a small, low-speed fan -- a couple decibels at most.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Replacement

    A. · February 1, 2024

My other burner/player worked great until I had to build a new PC with Windows 10. And when I tried to install the old unit, I found it was not supported by Windows 10. So went to my favorite shopping center to look for a replacement and after about an hour I found the BUFFALO Media Station Desktop 16x External Blu-ray Drive and I compared it with 2 other units and I decided this was the unit I wanted. It works great, plays and burns like a champ. But there is one small issue, there is no power off button! It does turn off when I shut down the PC, but I would like for it to be powered off when not in use. Other than that, it's a great unit, and it's exactly as described online!

1.0 out of 5 stars Spent days trying to get it working...ended up returning it. It never successfully burned a BD.

    J. · December 17, 2013

Did research before buying and went with Buffalo because of two big items: the enclosed software and the unit's stated burn speeds. However, this turned out to worse on-line purchase I have ever experienced. Both the software provided and the unit itself fails. I spent hours of time over multiple days, using multiple options but without successfully burning even one BluRay disk. (Made about 10 coasters though!). First the software: the overhead on the video is terrible. Have 7 gig of video? The final rendering of this results in over 22gig on the BD disk (if it actually successfully burned). I am guessing if you upgrade the software it shrinks the overhead, but wasn't going to even take that chance. The software DOES successfully create DVD's and I was successful burning a (smaller) video to my internal DVD writer using it. Also, the calculation of available space on the Blu-Ray is flawed. It stated, that the video I had created was going to need 21g for the BD, but when I burned the rendering to my harddrive the total was over 23g, which was too large for the Sony BD's I had. So you need to plan to TRIPLE whatever your current video sizes to estimate how many video clips you can burn to a BD with this software. (Another video editing software I have did not have near this much overhead or calculation poblem.)The Buffalo Unit itself: tried it with 2 laptops, one running Windows 7, the other Windows 8 (< eight months old). Neither could successfully write to the BD disks either with a very small BluRay video from the included software, or via Windows Explorer. (Also, tried using another Video authoring software tool, but it failed to burn to the unit as well.) On the Windows 8 laptop, I received "HW encode errors" during rendering, so turned hardware encoding off, and it took over 2 hours to render a file that would not burn.Note: I purchased the specific Sony BD's that Buffalo's website states provided 16x speed, so brand should not have been a problem.Very disappointed. Returned it, no I'm just out the cost of the BD discs and shipment box/packing purchase. Finally decided BluRay is not really necessary. Just going to play videos directly from laptop to TV via HMDI or Wireless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Bluray but has trouble with DVDs

    L.1. · September 11, 2025

I bought this drive to use with my laptop since disc drives aren't standard on laptops anymore. It's easy to install and plays Bluray excellently. The write function is great too. The only issues I have with this drive is:1, Playing and writing DVDs is a 50/50 gamble. Some times it works, sometimes it doesn't. All the DVDs I've tried are the correct region with no scratches or defects. Many of them are brand new and still won't play. It occasionally happens with Bluray as well.2, Sometimes the drive won't spin up and I have to disconnect the drive from my laptop and the power source, then restart my laptop and re-set up the drive to get it working again. This happens roughly every other day. There's no power issues since the drive is plugged directly into the wall and the USB ports on my laptop are in great shape since the laptop is new, so power and connection aren't the problem. All I can think of is there may be an issue with the DVD drive sensor.Still, I don't regret the purchase even if its sometimes troublesome to use. Luckily, I'm a very patient person and use it primarily for media. If I had to use it for work, it'd be a different story.

    Great product

    K.S. · November 14, 2022

Easy to use, quite and well built.

Excellent product that worked right out of the box

    S.Y. · January 9, 2024

I had recently tried a different external DVD/CD drive (purchased from another company) with my Mac Mini and was disappointed that the unit did not work at all. After troubleshooting with their tech team and arranging for an RMA on it, I went with the Buffalo Blu-ray model from Bolo and have been very happy with it. It works on both my Mac Mini and Windows machine through a KVM switch with a USB 3 hub so I can access the device on either machine without having to disconnect and reconnect the drive between computers. It reads every kind of media I've thrown at it and I've been able to burn gigabytes of old photos to DVD archives without a problem in both computing environments. I love the fact that the drive has its own power supply so using it with the powered USB hub and KVM switch combo is a breeze without creating a power load problem for either computer. Would definitely recommend this for anyone needing to add an optical drive to their computer set up.

    Gerät ist für US Markt

    P.S. · August 30, 2023
