Vocal Madness

Description:

Critics have described Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet as "vocalese at it's best"..."as versatile and entertaining as any vocal group you will hear"... 'electrifying'..."pure fun"..."sensational" ... "old school moving to new cool.' Reviewers, radio hosts, and listeners around the world have praised them as a standout for their creative originality and superb musicality. For more than two decades, this vocal quartet and their hot jazz band have built a loyal audience across five continents with their stylized arrangements of head-turning original songs and their original arrangements of American Songbook and jazz classics. Inspired by and often compared to The Manhattan Transfer, with their tight SATB harmonies and vocal sass, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet (UVJQ) has put their own creative signature on the group singing style that mixes great fun with great art. They have been highly celebrated for spotlighting and integrating original songwriting into a genre that is principally known for creative arrangements of existing standards. UVJQ's sparkling sound is delivered with the spirited elegance, lush harmonic texture, and popping sizzle of a 'vocal horn section,' punctuated by original melodies and lyrics bursting with wit, sentiment, and occasional flights of vocalese fancy. With the release of their 2012 'Hustlin' for a Gig' CD, which featured nearly all original songs encompassing a myriad of lyrical subjects and vocal jazz styles, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has been heralded as one of the most creative and captivating vocal jazz groups on the scene today. Legendary alto saxophonist Richie Cole first heard the DC-based UVJQ in 2012 and immediately declared them 'My new discovery, the whole package.' Cole, who has worked extensively with The Manhattan Transfer and been featured on their Grammy-winning albums 'Vocalese,' 'Mecca for Moderns,' and 'Extensions', instantly recognized the originality and vocal sizzle of UVJQ and the unique songwriting and jazz arranging talents of their leader, Ginny Carr. A lover of swingin' vocal harmonies and a prolific songwriter himself, Cole invited Carr to arrange his own songs for her group and collaborate with him on a recording featuring their collective original songs. 'Vocal Madness' is a collection of original songs by both Richie Cole and Ginny Carr, with arrangements by Carr. It's a high-flying and highly original performance by the power ensemble of Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet and their band, with guest Richie Cole on sax.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richie still has the madness and the magic.

I am compelled to write this review because of my sadness over Richie's death just a few weeks ago. I seem to have been effected by his passing more than I have been effected by the passing of other jazz legends. One reason may be that he always looked like a teenager even in later years. He obviously loved what he was doing. But life on the road is a rough life for any jazz musician, and doesn't make it easy to maintain health or stay away from alcohol and drugs, which shorten your life.Getting back to Vocal Madness, I am struck by how strong Richie's playing is on this recording. He has lost none of the verve and joy and virtuosity that he has always had. He sounds as great as he did on his classic 1970's recordings with his friend and partner, the great Eddie Jefferson. That's what makes this recording special. Richie has had a affinity for partnering with vocalists for a long time. He picked well when he decided to record with this group. They sing in the tradition of Eddie and Manhattan Transfer, and do it superbly. Group member Ginny Carr also wrote a few very good songs for this recording. The rhythm section is very good. If you love jazz in the bebop and hard bop tradition, be prepared to to be entertained. Thank you Richie for bringing me years of joy with your Alto Madness and I will miss you. I'll cherish your recordings, several of which I have reviewed on Bolo before. Bottom line: if you love modern jazz, you should get any and every of Richie's recordings. They are all great.

I feel this title is a misnomer... there’s such style in the vocals!!!  … The instrumental arrangement is in a different league... superb sax on ‘Now I have everything but you’... great guitar and a bluesy feel on ‘Vanna Bonta’ and ‘I got friends’!! The ‘doo-dahs’ give such a lift to the music, so do the scat vocals on ‘I love Lucy’... but the showtune style diction and short syllables on ‘He was the cat’ is top notch!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant method to this madness

This record is a stunning display of great jazz vocals! IT’S THE SAME THING EVERYWHERE, BOSSA NOVA EYES and D.C. FAREWELL, all have breathtaking work on the drums, piano and guitar, but the staccato vocals are really out of this world. A lighter, slightly poignant feel runs on SO YOU’RE GONE, a mood of collecting one’s self probably. VANNA BONTA with the 6/8 blues kind of feel is simply great!

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!

SONGS ARE EXCELLENT. WRITING IS EXCELLENT. HARMONY IS EXCELLENT. HOPING THAT THEY MAKE MANY MORE ALBUMS. I AM A FAN.
