5.0 out of 5 stars door latch shifting from summer expansion and winter contraction

    R. · August 5, 2025

what a great invention to allow for minor adjustments of the door latch movement from summer expansion and winter contraction. If you live in a traditional house in US and Canada, you know your house would "shift" during the seasons, this allowed my door to latch again!! awesome.easy to install, unscrew your existing plate, and screw this one that in to the same holes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually solved my door’s problem

    A.C. · June 25, 2024

I installed a new garage entry door about a year ago. Had it set perfectly and it closed smoothly. But as sometimes happens, something shifted recently and the latch stopped engaging the catch. Only way to get it to “click” closed was to pull very hard and fast upwards every time I’d close the door. I estimate the latch was off by about 1/3”. Sometimes had to do this several times to get the latch bolt to find the hole. Was going to try and fix this by shimming the hinges or grinding out the strike plate myself. I was not happy about that idea. Then I saw this product. I was very skeptical but I ordered one anyway. It installed using the same screw holes as the original strike plate in about two minutes. The unique shape of this product lets the door latch snap past, and yes, it actually made my door work like new again! Ten bucks for a strike plate is a lot, except it saved me a lot of monkeying around, and I didn’t end up ripping the door out of its pocket either!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked for me - Done in 2 mins!!! Easy Swap of Old Plate to Gator = Done and Fixed!!!

    C. · May 17, 2025

Door wouldn't shut - wasn't latching. In order for my Kwikset Plate to work, it needed to be lower, moved back a bit, and shimmed (to fill in the gap between door and wall). Instead of trying to do all that, I decided to go with the Gator Plate. I looked at David O. Kubiatowicz's review which had the picture of the Gator Plate compared to the Kwikset. Gator hole was bigger and lower. Not to mention, the extra plate helped shim the gap between the door and wall. The Gator Plate was the perfect solution to my problem. I did NOT have to make ANY adjustments to the existing screw holes at all. Used the same ones. Did NOT have to chisel any wood away either. Gator Plate same height as the Kwikset. This was simply an easy swap of plates to fix my problem. Hopefully yours too - Hope this Helps!!!

We had a terrible strike plate on a cheap entry door. It had a weird design with an extra sliding plate underneath that never seemed to be in quite the right position, so you always had to push on the door to get it to latch. And, it was installed just slightly too high. I futzed with it here and there, but it never improved.I finally stumbled on this thing, and somewhat to my surprise, it just totally worked. I think there really is something to the shape of the opening? At least in my situation, the screw holes were naturally a little over a 1/4" in towards the interior, compared to the holes for the old strike plate. This was enough that I was able to drill a fresh new set of pilot holes.Maybe it's expensive for what it is? But, I've rarely had something "just work" like this, without any messing around!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great but a bit "hacky"

    B. · December 13, 2017

First and foremost, this fixed my issue. I had a door that used to have a deadlatch that kept it closed tightly, but when I purchased new doorknobs, there wasn't a deadlatch available for what I needed. So to closure was loose, and it cause the deadbolt to have a lot of friction when trying to close it. I have a Kevo SmartLock, so this actually caused it to not close fully most of the time. This product narrowed the hole for the latch and the door is now holding in the perfect position to remove all friction from the deadbolt closing. That said, the reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because it feels a bit hacky. I thought the inner plate might be adjustable to narrow the hole, but it's actually static. You narrow the hole by sticking a small screwdriver into the tab and bending it, basically creating a "hump" that sticks out into the opening. It works, it just doesn't look as nice as I imagine a sliding back plate would. But how often do you look at your latch, right? Well, the other thing is that I can now here three distinct latching sounds. The first between the outer plate and the inner plate, the second between the inner plate and the elongated part of the tab (where you bend it with the screwdriver) and the third once the latch gets past the hump. If you close it quickly you only hear two, maybe one, and it's not that big a deal, just not what I expected.I actually had tried to do something similar with a standard plate, bending the tab to narrow the gap, but unless you bend the tab all the way out (which made my door TOO snug), you're going to be at risk of the door flying open since you have to bend a traditional tab from the back instead of the front, which is worse than a boltjam! So I have to hand it to them, this is a product that's going to work in almost every situation, I just wish it was made a bit differently to avoid the two annoyances I mentioned above.
