The 150 year Ortega tradition all started with Maria Conception Jacinta Dominguez Ortega, or as we like to call her, Mama. Mama Ortega. Mama's memorable cooking did more than just bring her family together. It was in Mama's kitchen that her 11th child, Emilio, established the Ortega Chile Packing Company. Emilio's fascination with chiles began when he moved to New Mexico in 1890. Here he encountered the state's popular big red chiles. When he returned home to California a few years later, he brought with him chile pepper seeds and many recipes for dishes he had grown to love while in New Mexico. Back home with his family at their adobe house in Ventura, California, Emilio planted the chile seeds. Those chiles grew extremely well in the temperature climate of Ventura. Soon Emilio had so many chiles he had to give them away. Everyone loved them! That's when he knew he had something special. In 2003, B&G Foods purchased the Ortega brand. Like Emilio Ortega, B&G Foods has a long tradition of commitment to quality. So today, when a family picks up a can of chiles or a box of taco shells, they know they are getting the very best. These are very well seasoned and flavorful beans. The jalapeño flavor in it is a good amount, not too spicy, but a nice amount so it is obvious there is jalapeño in the beans. We have used them alone as a side, as well as with rice, pasta, huevos rancheros, and a few other dishes. They compliment so many things, with the spiciness and flavor being great for us. Easy to use right out of the can.

Beans in general have been part of my diet as far back as I can remember. I was born in Havana, Cuba lived in Venezuela and Spain before making the US my home now for more than half my life,that said in all these yrs and all the different foods I've tasted I just bought this product for the first time a few days ago and can't believe I've never even heard of it before,not this particular one with these ingredients. I read reviews , and even though wasn't 100% sure I would like it decided to buy the 12 can deal and am very happy I did! I knew the beans were going to taste great as soon as they started to heat up and my kitchen filled up with the wonderful familiar aroma of Cumin, and other spices the only difference is that they ard a little sweeter than the traditional Cuban/ Puerto Rican style black beans . As far as heat level I don't mind heat but don't like my food to be overly hot spicy,I read a couple of comments saying they were too spicy , I didn't find these spicy/hot🔥 at all. Hope this is helpful

I like these but they taste very sweet to me, even though the label says 2 grams of sugar. They are not hot at all, and I would have been challenged to find a jalapeno pepper in any of the 7 cans I have used so far of the 12-can set I purchased. Might buy them again, but might also look for beans that work better for me. I am used to soaking and cooking black beans from scratch, so may have to go back to doing that to get beans I really like.I make black bean soup with the recipe from the Silver Palate cookbook. It is amazing when done right. Do include all of the mile-long list of ingredients, and be advised it takes two days to prepare.
