Description:
How perfectly charming: a Cairo guide named Jamil has returned Diana Standing's (Myrna Loy) lost Pekinese. She doesn't know that Jamil stole the dog so he could get close to the beautiful tourist. Writing in her biography (co-written by James Kotsilibas-Davis), Loy recalled: "Every woman's dream of heaven in the twenties was to be carried off to an oasis by Valentino, Ramon Novarro or any reasonable facsimile. Well, that's just what happened to me in The Barbarian." Novarro plays the rakish Jamil, who traverses the desert dunes -- with captive Loy in tow -- in this exotic pre-Code romance made even more exotic by Loy's famed sequence in the flower-strewn waters of an oasis bathing tub.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss the old musicals
Ten stars! Very entertaining screen play, love the music. Didn't understand all the words in the song so we sent for the sheet music and was surprised to be able to get it. Myrna Loy and Ramon Novarro were really good together. Too bad they didn't make a sequel! we play the DVD over and over again just to hear the music and see the acting. Ramon Novarro really did a beautiful job of singing Love Songs of The Nile. Wish I could find an old record of Mr Novarro singing that song somewhere. Also heard some of the melody from Temptation in the background which is my favorite song. Had the sheet music for years. Still can't believe I was lucky to get a copy of this great video! Thank you.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great romance
Pre-code romance drama with the always superb Myrna Loy and Ramon Navarro. I'd never seen any of his movies, only knew he was the silent Ben Hur. Very dashing.
1.0 out of 5 stars DOES NOT PLAY!
This disk does NOT PLAY!! Very disappointed!
5.0 out of 5 stars Very good Novarro/Loy teaming
Myrna Loy plays Myrna Loy pre-Nora Charles here, that is to say sexy but cool even strong, this time it is her leading man doing the vamping. Ramon Novarro, who was the most convincing gay guy playing straight in the 1930s is as usual convincing for us to believe that he CRAVES Myrna physically, of course what man, even a gay one, wouldn't? The subtle almost feminine masculinity of Novarro is evenly paired with the Loy's defensive yet strong nature. Not quite Garbo's androgyny, which worked best for Novarro and Melvyn Douglas in his comedic incarnations, but Myrna proves that she can stand her ground (no pun intended) here, she has a "backbone of steel" and it is needed to offset Novarro's character and personality. It comes off wonderfully, the acting, the setting, and the music.
4.0 out of 5 stars Early 19th Century Romantic Fantasy
What I liked most about this film was the look of the black and white photography. You can't find this kind of lighting in color film anymore. And it is beautiful, especially the nighttime scenes shot in desert locales. The story is a good example of what women from that time period (20's and early 30's) thought was the height of romance, to be swept away by a desert prince into the wastes so he could have his way with them. Rather incomprehensible to modern people. But the film is shot so beautifully and the dialogue and sets are clever and well written, you could almost be persuaded. Performances by Myrna Loy and Ramon Navarro are polished and entertaining. Worth seeing if just for the rather fascinating peek into a time period that no longer exists.
5.0 out of 5 stars Ramon the Magnificent !
Fun to watch but not as nice a guy as in The Pagan. But hey, that the character, not Ramon. Good story. A remake would be GREAT !! Only sad Ramon can’t be in it...
5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!
I've watched it over and over and over. All the acting is excellent. I loved all the little comical scenes in this otherwise serious screenplay. I can't believe this movie was filmed 87 years ago!!!!!!
3.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's me, I found the so-called hero to be creepy
Maybe it's me, I found the so-called hero to be creepy. I see Novarro as a brute and a savage. An American tourist catches the eye of a disguised Arab prince who decides to kidnap her, then try to win her love.Myrna Loy, looking exceedingly beautiful here, is the primary reason to see this movie. The film is gorgeous. The cinematography and costuming is incredible and made Myrna Loy (often the "nice girl" in films of the 1930s) into an incredibly alluring figure. Her bathing scene is simply one of the sexiest scenes in screen history. We are supposed to believe that Myrna Loy's character (Diana) loves Ramon Navarro's character (Jamil), but we are never given any valid reason as to *why* she might feel this way about him. Jamil is a creep, through and through. Not a charming cad. Not a dangerous bad boy, just a creep. If you have to have all things Myrna Loy then buy this movie. If you found this review helpful, please click on the link below.
