5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Show Cancelled Before Its Time!

R. · June 3, 2018

“Tremors: The Series” aired in 2003 on the Sci-Fi Channel and picked up where “Tremors 3: Back to Perfection” left off. The series continues to focus on Michael Gross’s character Burt Gummer as he and his fellow residents of Perfection Valley co-exist with the albino Graboid El Blanco. In maintaining continuity with the film series, the character Tyler Reed acts as a foil to Gummer, having purchased Desert Jack Sawyer’s tour agency from the third film. Jodi Chang continues as proprietress of Chang’s Market, though Lela Lee replaces Susan Chuang. Nancy Sterngood and her daughter Mindy also appear, though, like Jodi, new actors take their place (Marcia Strassman for Charlotte Stewart and Tinsley Grimes for Ariana Richards). Finally, Robert Jayne reprises his role of Melvin Plugg, who appeared in both the first and third “Tremors” films. New leads include Gladise Jimenez as Rosalita Sanchez and Dean Norris as Department of the Interior Agent W.D. Twitchell. Christopher Lloyd also makes a fun appearance as Cletus Poffenberger and Michael Rooker appears as a mob enforcer. While the first few episodes deal with Graboids and their offshoots, the show went beyond the format of the original films, introducing new monsters and an Area 51-like secret lab that served as the site of their creation. The show was fun in a monster-of-the-week style and, had it been given a greater chance, it could have developed into something like “Eureka” or “Warehouse 13.” Interestingly, the show features a surprising amount of gore for television, but it’s in keeping with its horror film origins. Unfortunately, “Tremors: The Series” failed to garner the ratings of “Farscape,” whose timeslot it took, and Sci-Fi cancelled the show after 13 episodes. Worse, the episodes were aired out of order, which led to the need for introductions to explain the continuity. This DVD set shows the episodes in their original order. The fourth film, “The Legend Begins,” was produced at the same time as this television series. As a prequel film, it did not directly relate to the show except for some geographic and character references. This and the fourth film were series co-creators’ S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock’s final involvement with the franchise. The Shriekers have also not appeared in the franchise after this television series. Interestingly, Burt’s survivalist videos and his Bullseye Brand Cactus Juice Marinade from “Tremors 5: Bloodlines” appear to reference parts of this show. The overall effect is the same goofy fun and loving homage to classic monster movies that has endeared the films to their fans. If you like the movies, you will like the show.

4.0 out of 5 stars So much fun and highly silly

H. · January 18, 2016

So much fun and highly silly. Love the guest star appearances from Christopher Lloyd (always enjoyable) and the crazy and inventive ideas the writers come up with to keep it fresh. The first episode was good, though the character Rosalita was over the top slutty and we are being force-fed introductions to new characters, but by episode two everyone settles into their relationships (Rosalita calms down the belly wiggles and looks less like El Blanco fodder). Overall, it keeps will with the movies and watching Gummer being his usual antisocial, paranoid, anti-government Graboid 'protector' and Perfection savior never gets old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe those OTHER reviewers got a different version than what ==> I <== received!(?)

It's relevant to my comments:I have a 55" Sony TV.I'd rather watch something in the original aspect-ratio --- regardless.I hate it when something is altered to fill a TV-screen, when it just loses picture information.I bought a big TV because even if it IS in, so-called full[TV]-screen, it's still 37" on my TV.That said, and NEVER having seen --- or HEARD of --- the, ten-year-old, TREMORS (13 episodes) TV series, I bought it.Like I said, I don't know ANYTHING about specially-edited, rearranged airings, or any of that other stuff some of thereviewers have made negative comments about. Here's MY opinion of this cancelled series:==> 1. I enjoyed the series.==> 2. I saw the entire 9 and 1/2 hours of programming over two days.==> 3. Having a HD-TV, I also watch DVDs through my Panasonic Blu-ray player: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PICTURE.==> 4. The DVD slip cover says Full Frame 1.33:1 ; English Dolby Digital 2.0; English SDH subtitles.I never SAW it on broadcast-TV. I saw it on the equvilant of grandpa's 36" glass picture tube TV, and I noticed nothing cutor squeezed to fit a 4:3 aspect ratio. It looked just fine. The picture through my Blu-ray player was comprable with, say, the HD-DVDs from The History Channel. Again, NOTHING WRONG WITH THE PICTURE.==> 5. There are absolutely no extra features.==> 6. The only disappointment I experienced is when the last episode was over; I wanted MORE. Ten years later, thereprobably won't be any more episodes, or movies. A shame! There are, most likely, worse movies that go on for five ormore sequels.==> 7. I am very disappointed in the nay-sayers that --- in the words of people younger than this 63-year-old ---"dissed" this series and/or the video quality of the product.==> 8. If, indeed, this fine series was broadcast in some bizzare sequence [other than I saw it on DVD], then itwas the network's fault it was cancelled.==> 9. This series is/was no better, and certainly was no worse than the theatrical film and its three sequels.==> 10. Buy it!

This is sadly only a short series cancelled before its time. I'm sure if you are familiar with the original movies This will be right up your street. For me personally I enjoyed this more than the movies and it's a shame so few episodes were created. All I can say is it's a quirky fun little universe well worth watching.
