  • The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 electric trailer brake controller is a small device with a big responsibility. As one of the most popular and most trusted brake controllers on the market, this proportional brake controller utilizes primary sensor technology to provide a smooth braking response in any stopping situation. The Prodigy P2 has an easy-to-use knob so you can effortlessly set the power output to your desired braking power, a boost feature that lets you apply up to three levels of additional braking power, especially when hauling heavier loads, the choice of electric or electric over hydraulic braking, and manual override to help you brake safely when an unexpected stop pops up. The P2 also has an LED digital display so you can monitor your settings and trailer braking activity and a power-save mode to reduce battery drain when not in use. This intuitive brake controller can easily be positioned on top of or under the dash, with your choice of a mounting bracket or mounting pocket and is self-leveling when mounted within a 90-degree vertical range, so there’s no need to adjust the unit once it’s installed. When you’re done towing, the P2’s snap-in dash mounting clip, Plug & Play port for two plug adapters, and removeable electrical connector allow the unit to be quickly stored. The Prodigy P2 truly is a complete trailer brake controller kit. It works with trailers with 1-4 axles, comes with all the mounting hardware needed for installation, and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, Easy to see and works great!

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I really like the easy to see display and big easy to use controls. The new high end model from Tekonsha has an LCD display and many small buttons, maybe good for techies...but I just want my trailer to stop. This model has nearly the same features in an easy to use package. My trailer has two axles with brakes and the unit setup and works great. In the mountains, I find that on the fly adjustments are easily accomplished with the large screen and large wheel. There is also a boost feature (that is adjustable also) on this model.Installation wise, the unit is roughly the same as any other controller, four wires and similar dimensions. However this unit (like many available now) is auto leveling, that provides more available angles for increased installation options. I would order a wiring install kit or the adapter wire if available for your application...makes life a bit easier.I installed mine in a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Hemi and Factory Tow Package. I needed the circuit breaker and controller power wire for installation. Under the dash as part of the factory tow pkg, taped up to a harness near the left side fuse box, is a dark green (??..yes green) pigtail wire that goes to the trailer 7way plug for the trailer brakes. This connects to the blue brake output of the brake controller. Convenient since there is no plug adapter available for this application (yet anyway). My factory tow package has the 12v and reverse lights already operational in the 7way plug, so adding the brake control was the last step for me to be able tow with this vehicle.I have been using the unit in the mountains now for several months and it has been flawless and settings remain where I set them. Overall, I am very pleased with this unit and I trust the Tekonsha name and reputation when it comes to my brakes.Remember that when you need to stop, your brakes are PRICELESS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Brake Controller

    H.A. · September 20, 2011

After reading up on brake controllers I ended up going with this Prodigy P2 controller. My setup consists of a 2011 Jeep Wrangler 2 Door pulling a 2011 Rockwood Premeire A126 Hard Side A-Frame Pop-Up. After adding the Mopar wiring harness myself I picked this up at a pretty good price on Bolo.Installation is easy but does require some extra parts for the Jeep Wrangler as it is not pre-wired for connection into a towing system with brake controller like most modern trucks and larger SUV's are. Adding on some heavy gauge automotive wire, butt connectors and a scotch lock connector to tie into my brake control wire under the dash I had everything I needed.I ran power wires through the firewall grommet that the brake control wire from the 7pin towing harness came through and brought wiring over to the drivers side of the center console foot well, connected up the plug that came with the controller and located the controller in the small cargo netting under the HVAC controls in my center console. When not in use the wiring for the brake controller is coiled up and tucked under the center console foot well out of the way and the brake controller is stored safely out of sight. The setup of the controller is easy, and the controller can be in any position (except totally sideways) allowing you to mount it wherever you would like, and at virtually any angle. I followed the instruction manual to make the initial adjustment and after a few smaller adjustments was dialed in and pulling away with my new camper in tow.Braking is smooth and consistent based on how hard you are braking and the manual control is easy to operate in the event you need to apply trailer brakes without tow vehicle brakes (such as severe sway conditions). From a braking standpoint, I would hardly tell the camper was back there.Great product and worth a few extra bucks over cheaper controllers. Hopefully this will last me a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This unit ROCKS !

I can't believe how great this unit works. It was extremely easy to set up. I replaced an older Tekonsha, a non digital unit. This is so much nicer. Very much worth the money. I just returned from a trip and one feature that I realized is... Braking power starts arounf 2.0 when the brakes are hit. If the unit does not sense slowiing down much or angle change, it actually releases to .8 to 1.2 or so. This keeps you from dragging with the trailer than you really want to. I set my unit up so when the brake pedal is pressed, the trailer starts to slow the vehicle down slightly. If I do not brake much, it will lighten up. If I begin to brake harder, the braking power to the trailer increase proportionally as needed. It will go to 6 if it needs to. This is a very smart unit. I really like the feature to hold the button down when brake is engaged to go into reverse mode. This disables the brake controller for a set time for manuvering without brakeing at the trailer. Very nice.I highly recommend to anyone wanting electronic brake control.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes a bit getting use to it

    Z.A.R. · August 4, 2013

Took me a while to dial it in as inititally it was applying way to much braking force and the trailer would stop dead and my Armada would start dragging it. The dials are pretty easy to reach and adjust but took me a while to get it dialed in how I like it. First trip out was from PA to Maine (Acadia National Park) with our Armada towing our brand new 31', 7000lb travel trailer. Highway driving and cruising it works great. Stop and go traffic takes some getting use to as in slow speeds it still, IMO, applies to much braking force if you just slightly apply the brake. Mashing them seems to work better for some reason. But very good directions, easy to use and took maybe 5 minutes to install. Took longer to find my metal drill bits than to install it.

The dealer said it wouldn't work!

    R.s. · September 14, 2015

Installed in seconds, works well, based on use of only a couple of hours of towing. Contrary to what the Jeep dealer said, it works perfectly with my electrical system, and complements the factory installed towing package on my 2015 Cherokee.

    Very easy to install.

    D.G. · August 5, 2018

Excellent controller.Very easy to install (15-20 min.) and works perfect. Dealer said they would have to hard wire the controller in (3-4 hrs.) and anyone can do it. Only tool is a philips screw driver.

This is a very good brake controller
