As his Holiness Pope Leo XIII said, “ Civility and urbanity in customs strongly predisposes minds to attain wisdom and follow the light of truth.” This admirable book covers various customs such as addressing our superiors with great respect, dining with civility, speaking with amiability, sitting with proper posture, dressing well, and men practicing chivalry by pulling out chairs and carrying heavy loads for mothers and sisters, ETC. Modern man has a notion that these are “outdated” and “ stifle spontaneity”. Does the Blessed Lord praise spontaneity, or does he not rather praise those who pick up their crosses and deny themselves? The courtesies that used to be common were born of a Christian civilization that treated self and neighbor with dignity, and sought to make life pleasant for those around us. These books have blessed us beyond measure. How much sweeter it is for the wife when her husband is a gentleman, and visa versa. These old customs are a fabric on which to weave a virtuous family life. If we are constantly doing whatever we feel, and not subordinating our actions to reason and good custom, how shall we ever gain victory with the Cross?

This book was so inspirational for me as a Catholic mother and wife leaning toward traditionalism. The goals are perhaps loftier than many of us can achieve within our own families, but there are so many little things than can be applied to improve the overall quality of family life. It is a book that will fly in the face of what most contemporary theories are on what is appropriate within family relationships, but the explanations of why these age old customs were once the norm is so convincing that one is likely to develop a greater respect for them. The book has inspired my husband and me to make some subtle changes in how we handle and interact with our own children. I have no doubt that everyone in our home will benefit from what we have learned and especially what we actively apply.
