5.0 out of 5 stars Eleven "Classic" Son House Songs - Recorded in 1965 in a Real Recording Studio in NYC = Original Delta Blues at it's Very Best!!

G.C. · July 1, 2012

The songs on this CD are 11 of Son House's best. They are a very good representation of his brand of Original Mississippi Delta Acoustic Blues. What makes this CD different than "A Proper Introduction to Son House" CD, is that the original Son House Songs on "A Proper Intro..." were recorded back in 1941 & 1942 by Alan Lomax (for the Library of Congress), on a portable recording machine, on site in the Mississippi Delta. Son House moved from Mississippi to Rochester, NY in 1942, and became somewhat "retired" from the Blues. However, during the Blues Revival of the 1960's Son House was "re-discovered", and he returned to performing & recording, and the songs on this CD are songs that were recorded in a "real" recording studio back in 1965, in New York City. So, the quality of these recordings are much better than his original ones recorded back in 1941 & 1942.Son House was a "Southern Legend" and also an "American Music Legend". He walked a thin line between being a Baptist Preacher, and a "Juke Joint" Bluesman. His spiritual side really shows in the song "John the Revelator". As many other reviewers pointed out, Son House was very influentual to many other Blues Artists, especally Robert Johnson. How I became aware of Son House, is from the Lynyrd Skynyrd Song "Swamp Music", written by the late/great Ronnie Van Zant. In the song, it states:..."I'm going down to the swamp, gonna watch my hound dogs catch that coon...When the Hound Dogs start barking, they sound like "...Son House singing the Blues..." I did some research and found out that Ronnie Van Zant & Lynyrd Skynyrd were very influenced by Son House, and they really admired his music. This particular CD contains 11 of Son House's Songs at their VERY BEST!!! I highly recommend this particular CD. Thanks and I hope this review has been helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The REAL Blues

L. · July 11, 2018

A lot of blues has more than a bit of braggadocio to it, but not Son House. It's the REAL real thing. If you can get through the end of his1965 version of "Death Letter Blues" without shedding a tear, check your pulse. You are probably dead too. Same goes for the rest of all Son House's later musicThere is no Howlin' Wolf belting out a tune or John Lee Hooker celebrating his anger (don't get me wrong; I love all of them). There is just The Blues. One of the greatest musical artists of all time period (and quite a good person)Get the complete 1965 sessions on Columbia Legacy here if shelf place permits it. It has plenty of outtakes that you won't want to be without. The entire 1965 session I do believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Delta Blues And Sound Quality Too

I.J.K. · October 24, 2012

I love old folk and blues music, especially Delta blues, so I was thrilled to see a compilation of an artist who unfairly missed being listed among the greatest Mississippi players in history- Son House. Although this record was recorded in the 1960's, House plays and sings real, pre-commercial folk blues and gospel music mostly from the pre-1940's era. The selection is excellent, giving a hint of the scope and breadth of folk and blues through a wide variety of subject matter, tones and moods, and styles of performance, from the sly Preachin' Blues to the rhythmic a cappella gospel of John The Revelator to the classic blues of Death Letter and Levee Camp Moan. The best thing about this compilation, and what would cause me to reccomend it above many other Delta and House albums (especially to those new to folk/blues music)is the quality. Not only is the packaging nicely done for such a compilation, the soud quality is excellent- no different than listening to a new album made in a mid-range studio here in the 2010's. For those who regularly listen to old folk blues, this will be an obvious bonus. Most recordings of great artists from this era range from tolerable to unlistenable, sometimes requiring effort to appreciate the music and ignore the pops and hisses that make it sound as though your record is being played through a tinny AM radio. No so here, and as such I reccomend this record both to devotees of American music and those who want to begin listening without having to get used to bad recording quality just to hear good music.

If you are looking for a well produced, smooth, polished blues collection, then this is not for you. If however, the sound of soulful, unadulterated, rhythmic and heartfelt wailing is what you are after, this CD delivers in spades.Son House, Robert Johnson et al. are the primary originators of the Delta blues genre and this particular Son House CD demonstrates the blues very well. It should be in any self respecting blues musical collection or showcase.Other great Blues CD's to add to you collection would also include (not a definitive list by any means)Sonny & BrownieComplete Recordings

This is an amazing album, I love the style and I love the songs. I am learning fingerstyle blues guitar...To the joker talking about Plagiarism. You gotta be kidding everybody. If I understand correctly This album is a reissue of the album "Son House - Father Of The Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions" which means 2 things 1)the album was recorded originally in 1965 and 2)the songs were created way before 1965.Led Zeppelin on the other hand recorded their first Studio Album in 1969.
