There's nothing terribly complicated about the Fratellis' debut album, Costello Music, but that's by no means a criticism. Rather than inject their songs with complex chords, or steep their lyrics with their political and social agendas, this Glasgow trio have instead focussed on writing 13 songs that are pure, unabashed entertainment. And it's a pace--and an attitude--that doesn't let up, from the jumpy opening bars of "Henrietta" to the groupie-reminiscing of "Ole Black'n'Blue Eyes". In many ways, Costello Music sounds like a return to the hedonistic rush of early 1990s Britpop, with its exhilarating guitar riffs and arrogant swagger--"Chelsea Dagger" somehow applies the attitude of early Oasis to the pop catchiness of Great Escape-era Blur. But the Fratellis also know their history: the ska-punk of "Cuntry Boys & City Girls" and "For the Girl" has the Fratellis sounding like the cheeky offspring of the Clash, or a less-irritating Madness. But all this analysis kind of misses the point of Costello Music: this is music for dancing, not for contemplation. It's loud, fast and in-your-face, exactly what you'd expect from three young men with guitars. --Ted Kord

But.....Wow!!! Each and every song seems to draw off something from a different era and in a good way. It sounds influenced not recycled. Jon's voice is an awesome throw back to the British Invasion (although he's Scottish) and more than half the songs on the album make me think to myself "the Beatles might've written this if they were just starting out today". Ok maybe most of the lyrics are about girls but they're still clever and original the way they're written. There isn't one song that makes me want to hit the skip button. Costello Music is instantly one of my all time favorite albums. I hope they come back to New York because I'd love to see them live now that I'm actually aware of them. Damn!! How did this band fly under my musical radar for so long?

Fun! Fun! Fun! Three guys with guitars! Say what you will otherwise about this CD, but when it comes down to it, this thing is 100% pure unadulterated fun. I heard one song on the radio (#4, Chelsea Dagger) and had it stuck in my noggin after that- it was very annoying! The next day, on a hard-fought whim I finally bought the album at Best Buy. I have never regretted this! Really it was out of desperation, since all the music out "all sounds the same nowadays". Come on... you've said it too. It's not just that you're old- 99% of what's out there right now sucks a$$.That's certainly not the case here. This is the very, very rare album that's actually worth buying. There's not a bad track on here. When's the last time you said that about a CD? Buy it... you will not be sorry!

The album that fueled a million commercials. The songs on this album are so catchy that everyone used them for advertising, much like Moby's Play. I don't know what happened to this fire because every album since has been worse than the last. I've seen them live 3 times because of these tracks, which they still play for the faithful.

A great CD with a sound that reminds me of the Beatles in their later years; great harmonies and innovative style. An older sound that has been modernized for these newer times. It is refreshing to hear a band that isn't trying to sound like every other band that is currently trying to make a name for themselves.

This truly is an outstanding debut album. The writing is first rate; the best pop tunes are always hook-laden and fun and that's what is here. This is the most refreshing and exciting pop album in a very long time, in fact. If you like the energy of the early Beatles and the catchiness they had, this is for you. Every song is a lively, exciting pop confection. The band sounds like a cross between the Beatles, the Kinks and the Who and I say this as one who grew up with these bands. Bravo!

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up Costello Music. I had heard the songs in a couple of TV commercials and been to the Fratellis' myspace page. When I got the CD I was blown away. The lyrics aren't that special, but the music is amazing. Upbeat and catchy with interesting tempo variations. This is great music to turn up and blast on your iPod while working out or in your car while driving down the highway. A pure adrenaline rush!

Costello Music in a nutshell; Fun, bouncy, good music. Everyone knows one song from the Ipod commercials, but the rest of the music is great on this album too.I listen to it whenever I am either driving or doing housework, because it makes the more mundane tasks much more fun to get thorugh. It is really bouncy, moving music - and I can't help but to feel good and dance about whenever it is playing in the house.

Frage mich, warum ich die Band noch nie bemerkt habe
Ich bin durch Zufall auf die Band gestoßen. Im Grunde war mir das Riff von Chelsea Dagger schon irgendwie im Ohr, aber weder kannte ich den Namen des Titels noch der Band. Wie ich auf YT gelesen habe - das bekannteste unbekannte Lied der Welt. Passt! Aber nachdem ich den Titel durch Zufall mitbekommen und dann auch auf YT gefunden habe, habe ich weitere Lieder von der Band gesucht und was soll ich sagen - einfach genial Mucke. Geht tierisch ab und verdammt witzig und melodiös dazu. Musste sofort die CD bestellen und das ist eine der ganz wenigen CDs, bei denen ich wirklich alle Lieder gut finde. Klar gibt es Highlights wie eben Chelsea Dagger, aber auch der Rest steht dem wenig nach. Gerade überlege ich, welche der neueren CDs ich mir noch anschaffe. Die Band liefert bis heute immer noch genialen Stuff ab. Es ist unglaublich, dass ich die bisher nicht einmal wirklich bemerkt hatte ...
