Welcome to DVD, Mr. Kotter. Born of Gabe Kaplan's stand-up comedy reminiscences, this 1975 series stars the Marxist (as in Groucho) comedian as a teacher who returns to the tough Brooklyn high school of his youth to teach students who are as unmotivated and undisciplined as he was. If Ron Paillo, as "village schmendrik" Arnold Horshack was Kotter's class clown, then John Travolta, as Vinnie Barbarino, the dim leader of the Sweathogs, became this series' "Most Likely to Succeed" star pupil. He gets extra credit for graduating from Teen Beat idol to A-list movie star, and seeing him at the beginning of his roller coaster career is the main fascination. Not to take anything from the rest of the cast, including Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs as Freddie "Boom Boom Washington," Robert Hegyes as self-described "flim-flam man" Juan Epstein, the late John Sylvester White as curmudgeon Mr. Woodman, who remembers Kotter from his delinquent days; and Marcia Strassman (displaying an off-center Diane Keaton quality) as Mrs. Kotter, whose main purpose seems to be an audience for Kotter's jokes that open each episode. This collection contains six episodes from the series' first three seasons: "One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest"; "Father Vinnie"; "Sweatside Story"; "I'm Having Their Baby"; "The Deprogramming of Arnold Horshack"; and "Goodbye, Mr. Kripps," something of a Very Special Episode in which Vinnie blames himself for a teacher's heart attack. Welcome Back, Kotter is grade-A nostalgia, but points are taken off for lack of commentary or interviews with Kaplan or any other members of the ensemble who aren't John Travolta. It says Television and than a WB emblem and than Favorites.I am sure that if this one has the episodes with the original cast that it is also great.These are the episodes the one I have contains:One flu over the over the cuckoos nest, Father Vinnie, Sweatside story, I'm having a baby, The Deprograming of Arnold Horshack. Im soo glad I got this. I was a kid when this sitcom hit the airwaves and now watching this is much better than the tv of today which is mostly reality drama tv shows. This is a funny classic as I spent watching a marathon of it on Labor Day on Antenna tv. I may purchase more dvds in the future.... A++++++++++

I loved this show as a kid, because it had sympathetic characters, largely predictable situations which felt comfortable, and humor that was funny because it was cheesy, heavily echoing the classic days of comedians like Groucho Marx and Henny Youngman. Hell, Gabe Kaplan even looked like Groucho. (Nowadays, without the moustache and all the hair on top of his head gone, he looks like Harpo. Time can be cruel ...)I still love it now, because it reminds me of a time when both TV and I were much more innocent, and the world seemed like a simpler, more friendly place. And no one has their nose glued to a cellphone in this show, ignoring all around them in a pretense of "social networking" which really only results in increased isolation. Somewhat unrelated rant, I know. But not really.I sometimes miss being in middle school and hearing kids say to each other, "Up your nose with a rubber hose" or "What? Where?? How??" I feel old saying it, but things really were more simple in those days; no AIDS, no terrorism (at least in this country), no mass shootings ... well, tempus fugit. But I like this show because it makes me feel like a 12-year-old with a glass of milk, a plate of cookies, both parents alive and a lot less awareness of the cruelties of the world.

I have not seen this series since the 7o's. It the series as we all know launched Travolta's career. This is a funny and great series which brings back many memories of a time period I grew up in. Two of the actors are deceased. however there are memorable portrayals from the ensemble cast which marks this comedy series as unforgettable ; for me it has a lot of sentimental value.

Great to relive all my memories. What an excellent TV series. Please see John Travolta before he was cool so many years ago. Not your usual rom com. Basically, this show has a lot of heart unlike those that are popular in our new era. These days it seems that we live in a world with a lot more repression. Most of the jokes would probably be illegal now.

I always loved films and tv shows centered on the classroom, but this show was so funny it was surreal. Set in Brooklyn in the 1970s, comic Gabe Kaplan (Mr Kotter) and his hillarious under-achieving gang of students known as the Sweathogs, live and learn. Under Mr Kotter's all seeing eye and fatherly wisdom, each episode is a comical situation so many of us experience as teens, but not always with the care and guidance this teacher offers.Lots of laughs to be had as you sit thru this set of 6 episodes.

Welcomeback Kotter got better as time went on. It hadn't reached it's stride the first season. I loved the series but in season 1 it needed .....seasoning. :)
