5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You

B.D. · July 19, 2006

I always feel like I have to say "thank you" to the producers who give us quality films like this, knowing that various aspects of that quality will preclude commercial success. (But why the title "Prime," and why the sloppy graphics on the DVD case?)This is a movie that shows us two wonderful women from different cultures, and how they relate to each other. Uma Thurman is magnificent. The humanity (creativity, life, humor, passion, femininity,...) seem to shine out of her in every scene. What an attractive PERSON. Admittedly, I would be entertained watching her solve a rubix cube for an hour and a half, let alone star in a fun plot. She is a joy to watch.I laughed out loud at Meryl Streep's facial contortions as she learns more and more intimate details about her son, and as she and her husband hide in the furniture store! She's won more awards for drama, but I think she's very, very funny. I hope she does more comedy. The young male lead didn't have half the range of expression of either woman, but perhaps he was cast because of this, as a realistic young man, with at times great maturity (dating scenes, scene in elevator), and great immaturity (most of the rest of the time). The ending was difficult because like most "ugly americans," I want things all buttoned up at the end. I empathized with Rafi and felt sorry for her. But it was courageous to play it differently.Debate the details, everyone, but I'll always give five stars to quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Streep's uncanny performance overshadows the entire move

L. · March 22, 2014

If you purchased this movie and watched only one scene, the one where Meryl Streep has to listen to Uma Thurman's painfully explicit description of her sexual dalliance with her new boyfriend, who turns out to be Streep's characters son....it would be well worth the price of the movie. The legendary Meryl Streep, in this movie, proves once again (as though there were anything left to prove) that she can, indeed, do it all. Here, in the role of an Upper-West Side Jewish psychotherapist, Meryl gives a performance filled with comedic flourishes yet, at the same time, so human, so real and so wise, that she leaves me gaping at the screen in sheer, unadulterated amazement. I love her character here, vulnerable while strong-willed, serious while being hilarious to watch, a keenly drawn, magnificently subtle, performance of an ordinary well-meaning woman walking a tightrope of conflicting obligations and triumphing through the sheer depth of her caring, empathy and humanity, a truly virtuoso performance. The film is filled with great characters and memorable performances but, I'm sorry, Ms. Streep simply takes my breath away in this role and her ability to inhabit body, mind and spirit, yet another unforgettable character frames, yet again, her extraordinary genius.

3.0 out of 5 stars although the doorman/guard at our heroine's apartment building was one I enjoyed, but most of the humor didn't strike me ...

C.Z. · July 9, 2014

This one is not quite so humorous as intended. In spite of my doubts, the story kept me watching until the end. The chemistry between characters didn't quite work for me, although the doorman/guard at our heroine's apartment building was one I enjoyed, but most of the humor didn't strike me as humorous. I do not understand why our leading lady continues to visit a high-priced analyst with issues she is more likely to discuss with a close friend. The casting doesn't quite work. We are told there's an age difference, but we sure don't feel the age difference and the characters don't appear to have an age difference of more than a couple of years. The depth of the relationship between leading man and leading woman does not seem to go beyond sex and possibly an interest in art that is almost incidental. Yet as I say, the story kept me going until the final scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and touching, a great film to watch on a rainy Saturday night.

N.J. · January 23, 2017

This film is hilarious and yet poignant, as it focuses on a young Jewish man coming of age and falling in love with an older woman who is decidedly NOT Jewish and knows little of the young man's traditions. His mother is played by Meryl Streep and she does a terrific job of being an over-protective mother worried that her son may marry goy. There's a great twist to the plot that makes it all a wonderful, light-hearted look at what it means to become an adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyed this Film

A. · July 18, 2024

Meryl Streep is amazing in this movie. I thought the story was quite fun (and it's definitely not the standard rom-com) but what made it worth watching was Meryl's subtle expressions throughout. She is SO good!!!Uma Thurman was a delight as well. I recommended it to my gal pals and they really enjoyed it too. I watched it 3 times just to enjoy seeing Meryl Streep at the top of her game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Streep at her best.

B. · March 4, 2021

This movie is one of my favorite Streep films because it shows her ability to imitate real people doing real things. She is a marvel of mimicry as the Jewish matron who over controls her son and drives him crazy, just as they are required to do to satisfy some inherent cry from within that compels these mothers to over mother, in fact, over-everything! What a great film.

Delizioso, perfettamente recitato, delicato, Istruttivo

A.G. · January 20, 2022
