Description:
The two mightiest monsters of all time battle in the thrilling adventure classic, King Kong vs. Godzilla. When an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island to steal King Kong for advertising purposes, they get more than they bargained for when the gigantic ape attacks an unsuspecting village and an enormous octopus. Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. I could barely contain myself waiting for it to come to a theater near me. Unfortunately, it never did make it to my hometown, or at least my parents chose not to tell me if was showing in our area, probably wanting to spare themselves the ordeal of sitting through another dumb monster show with me!Then this wonderful DVD presentation was made available and I snapped it up. Ironically, now MY kids dreaded sitting through another dumb monster show with dad! This is the ultimate goofball Godzilla movie, from the serio-science gobbledygook from the UN headquarters to the Japanese sidekick Taco (is that actually a name in Japan? ) complaining that his corns always hurt when he is near monsters, to the (hot) island mom and her small child menaced by the giant octopus, to the ad company president shouting "banzai" while being dropped onto the deck of the ship bringing Kong to Japan, there is just a great, good natured feeling about the whole show. As the sixties progressed, the series became more and more juvenile but this one struck just the right balance of humor and special effects, with the monsters played straight for the most part. For baby boomer Godzilla fans, this is a must have for your collection.

This film is bonkers and I love it for it that is why I had to have the english version even though I already have the Criterion Godzilla set. I love Godzilla and King Kong, but am I in the minority to think that the red octopus is the real star in this film? I thought those scenes with the octopus were pretty cool and done very well. It is a fun film and if you like Godzilla, definitely check it out!

I loved these old kaiju movies with my dad when I was a kid. Now I get to enjoy them with my own kids. My oldest love Godzilla as much as I do (YAY! Nuclear Lizards rule!), and my youngest is a Kong fan (boo... dumb munkey). We had so much fun watching this together -- obviously the old costumes the actors wore to duke it out in mini-sets are not as refined as the CGI we have today. This was such a fun old movie and I got to tell my kids how the film making back then differs from today and how the storyline was so much more detailed than the reliance on special effects.I highly recommend this and the other Kaiju movies from Toho (especially the Godzilla flicks!)

東宝版とは違うアメリカ公開版です・・・！！ いきなりユニバーサル映画のマークが！！国連本部にいるアメリカ人キャスター（？）、解説の博士と、日本のスタジオ？にいるレポーター？がテレビモニターで、日本でのできごとを見守るといった感じの構成になっています。特撮の見せ場は、ふんだんにあるものの、日本のドラマ部分はだいぶカットされて、衛星中継での両者のやりとりでつないでいます。音声も英語吹替えのみ。タランティーノやティム・バートンたちは、これを観ていたのかなあと思うと興味深いですが、東宝版のブルーレイ化を安価で入手したいという期待で購入したので、ガッカリしました。アメリカ版を初めて観ることができたのは収穫ですが、何度も観たいとは思いません。 画質は、ブルーレイとしては、物足りないが、悪くはないといった程度です。映像特典は、ありません。英語字幕は、難聴者のためのものなのか、ゴジラの鳴き声や、ヘリコプターの音までが、出てきます。
要注意
単純に吹き替えただけ、と思ったら怪獣王ゴジラみたいにあちらの俳優さんによる再編集版でした。ちと残念。Blu-rayではあってもブラッシュアップなどは一切無し(むしろ悪くなっている？)なのでお勧めしません。まあ価格が安いので同好の士と酒の肴にするのは良いかも知れません。
