Great camping, hiking, survival potable water purification method. 50 tablets makes 25 quarts (6+ gallons) of potable drinking/cooking/laundry/showering water - reducing bacterial infection possibilities. Small glass bottle metal cap keeps all items dry and safe, while compact size allows easy storage anywhere inside another drinking container, or go bag back pack.

Does the job after three months of use. Easy to do, two tables in the small sump pump tank. For the price a good deal as it keeps the majority of the buildup away. Never allows it to become a problem. No smells. If need be I add some water to the sump pump tank so it triggers the pump to remove the water. That way I can see it move through the clear discharge tube and know the tube is not clogged.

They work, and produce potable water with minimal aftertaste. I live in a hurricane zone, and if power goes out so does the water treatment plant. Though you can still get water it may no longer be safe for drinking. In addition to stockpiling both bottled and stored water for an impending emergency it's good to have ways of purifying water if you run out before having to go to a gravel/sand/charcoal filter, solar still, or filtering through cloth and boiling.Supplies of bottled water are limited in stores if a hurricane is coming. Empty shelves. So I have filtration straws and these as well. Clean, drinkable water is the most important consideration there is. You can survive for a month with no food but with no water about 3 days in hot conditions. Definately a potential lifesaver, I'm certainly not counting on the government.

... dipping your head into a cold mountain stream and taking a long refreshing drink is an experience that has basically vanished from the wilderness areas of America. With the increased use of the wilderness there has also been an increase in the amount of bacteriological contamination of backcountry water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that 90 percent of the world's water is contaminated in some way.Without getting too much into basic chemistry, there are two methods for water purification tablets: Iodine and chlorine. Iodine is the arguably more effective method, but it leaves an iodine taste. It is suggested the taste may determine how much or how little one drinks. So, how do you deal with it? In this case, Potable Aqua includes a second bottle with tablets you can add to remove the taste, OR, simply adding vitamin C (i.e. Tang), or adding a pinch of salt per quart, adding flavorings (e.g., lemonade mix, etc.) or you can also pour it back and forth between containers (again, AFTER it has been adequately treated). The other option is chlorine, Chlorine should be used for persons with iodine allergies or restrictions like persons with thyroid problems, are on lithium, are allergic to shellfish (they may also be allergic to iodine), women over fifty and pregnant women should consult their physician prior to using iodine for purification. Be aware that iodine is light sensitive and must always be stored in a dark bottle, once opened, it may need to be used within a certain time.The effectiveness of all chemical treatment of water is related to the temperature, pH level, and clarity of the water. Cloudy water often requires higher concentrations of chemical to disinfect. If the water is cloudy, strain it, add the tablets and swish it around. Splash some water with the chemical onto the lid and the threads of the water bottle so all water areas are treated. The water should sit for at least 30 minutes. The colder the water, the less effective the chemical, it works best if the water is over 68F/21C, if the water temperature is below 40F/4C, double the treatment time before drinking. Finally, iodine and chlorine will NOT work on toxic water (water that has dissolved chemicals or solids like salt). In that case, it MAY be safe/safer to add the use of absorbent filters (i.e. with charcoal), but the BEST advice is to simply NOT use toxic water!I always say you should have at least TWO options for water, fire and shelter. Here, tablets are one, the other is a filter like Sawyer Products SP128 Mini Water Filter (It has the distinction of being able to be used almost perpetually by simply backwashing it!). But the best method is boiling, some say you don't actually have to "boil" water to make it safe, that by the time water actually comes to a boil it is already safe, but I like to see bubbles for my own peace of mind!

Aaaah yes! The venerable, iodine water purification tablets. Short of hard-boiling water, this is the best way to render the water in your canteen, water bottle, camelback sterile. I personally recommend that every pack have a bottle. This pair contains one bottle for purification and another to neutralize the iodine and flavor.I highly recommend these tablets. Furthermore, I strongly recommend that anyone who may eventually use the tablets make sure that they are very familiar with their use and gain some experience. How many tablets, how to mix with a loose cap, how long to wait, and how to NOT confuse/misuse the neutralizing agent are critical to ensure that the water is purified. As is often the case, this product is proven effective but we have to make sure that we use it right.

Works as advertised. Used about twice for 3 day hike I was on. The only gripe I had with it was the taste of iodine when the packaging says “no iodine taste”

Worked brilliantly when I went hiking through the mountains. For days I was drinking water out of streams and farm irrigation pipes. I didn't get ill once. The bottles are tiny and easily fit into easy to reach pockets. The neutralizer was excellent - it wasn't like drinking bottled water or anything but it's definitely the best Ive tried.
