Forty Guns is the most rampantly sexualized Western ever made, and the most outrageous of Samuel Fuller's late-'50s B movies. Fuller's original title was "Woman with a Whip," referring to the hard-riding range baroness--Barbara Stanwyck, sporting silver hair and (most of the time) black, skintight man togs--who's "the boss of Cochise County" and a law unto herself. The forty guns are an army of pistoleros who accompany her just about everywhere, and Fuller misses no opportunity to exaggerate their macho assertiveness in black-and-white CinemaScope, whether thundering along the horizon or formed up on either side of a preposterously long dinner table with Stanwyck at its head. Barry Sullivan costars as a Wyatt Earplike gunfighter who both threatens Stanwyck's empire and awakens her lust for something besides power. As one of his brothers, Gene Barry (soon to star in Fuller's mind-blowing Vietnam movie China Gate) enjoys a passionate liaison with a gunsmith's busty blond daughter (Eve Brent) whom he romances down the bore of a rifle--an image Jean-Luc Godard would memorialize in Breathless. In the relentlessly double-entendre dialogue and the blocking of scenes, everything takes on sexual overtones: power and impotence, political advantage and exclusion. Fuller and cameraman Joseph Biroc capture many sequences in single, minutes-long takes that often end in a death--and in one perverse instance, the revelation of a death that has occurred midway through without our knowing it. (It's a T.S. Eliot moment, though we won't insist on it.) Style is all in this movie, which will leave you either astonished or aghast. More likely, both. --Richard T. Jameson

Love this movie Stanwyck and Barry Sullivan are wonderful in this movie. Love Standwyck's character. She is so strong and wonderful on that white stallion. Love story between a lawman and the lady who runs Cochese county. Stanwyck's brother is always in trouble for messing with the girls, and just being a spoiled brat. Stanwyck falls in love with Grif, but her weakeness is her brother who she is always bailing out of trouble. Wonderful movie. Standwyck's horseback riding skills are beautiful with the white stallion.

Outstanding performance by all the cast,especially for Ms Barbara Stanwyck,as she was 49 years young in this movie and did her own stunt work! Even in B/W this movie had good direction by Mr Samuel Fuller,good shots,angles and Mr Fuller,later on became a director to follow and learn from,which to me personally is the highest honor any other director can give to another...Great 1950's Western genre flick with a good story,enough action to keep you interested and not bored,for the '50's good camera work also. I highly recommend to any Barbara Stanwcyk fan and also a 50's Western fan too.

The DVD version I purchased has the widescreen and full screen version on both sides of the disc. I don't like this on a disc because experience tells me that these discs with A and B sides get damaged very often. Although not a Blu-ray, the image is quite clear.The western is interesting. It has a tough woman played by Barbara Stanwyck and the Bonnel brothers who come to Tombstone to make an arrest on behalf of the federal government. Jessica Drummond, played by Stanwyck seems to control the town and she's supported by forty guns, including a crazy young brother. There is a lot of atmosphere accentuated by a beautiful cinematography, some dramatic gun fighting, a romance between tough guy and tough gal highlighted by a sudden tornado, and a pair of beautiful songs that add to the plot's development. At the least, the film did not bore me. It just seemed that the plot had a few holes here and there. One moment, Jessica is all powerful and the next moment, she is in a fragile position. The romance between Jessica and Griff was a strange one. Wonder how they got together at the end and how Jessica gave up everything so easy to go off with Griff. However, Fuller deserves good credit to attempt to deliver an interesting western film.

If you want to be entertained when you decide to spend 90 minutes or so watching a film, I suggest viewing this one. Even if Westerns are not your bag.
Captivating western
Whilst flawed and in parts dated (a singing cowboy makes several appearances) this is a unique, surprising and captivating western. A quite breathtaking opening scene is an indicator that we are in the hands of director who uses his craftsmanship to unusual effect. The camera work is at times stunning for a film of this time. Long tracking shots of huge open vistas and big close ups of the main characters which must have influenced Sergio Leone.There are several unusual aspects to this film which make it feel different to most other westerns. The style is a combination of a traditional western (with very authentic looking locations) with Film Noir; there are lots of low and high angle shots and Barbara Stanwyck is the ultimate femme fatale The dialogue has moments of sexual innuendo that are very risque for the time. Special effects are used in a quite remarkable scene that takes place during a tornado. And the violence is sudden and brutal, foreshadowing later westerns.This is a must-see film for fans of westerns, film noir, Samuel Fuller and quality cinema.

A movie that trys to be everything... and falls short of the mark.
Some movies get made because the driving force , the one with the money , wants his or her vision made. This movieattempts to be a western , with Southern Belle tragic love on the plantation which is now a huge ranch instead , and evenhas some ballads where none are needed. Barbara S. is the owner of the ranch , and rules the area with her 40 rangehands. The local lawman is in her pocket , and shes in his head/heart. She is not evil , but her younger brother , theprinceling , just can't stay out of trouble. The supporting cast is extensive and includes Dean Jagger, Barry Sullivan , and Gene Barry. When some strangers show up in town Gene Barry falls for the local gunsmiths daughter. Most classic line of the movie ;Gene Barry talking about the gunsmiths daughter - She is built like a 44-40; I'd love to clean her guns! ( Note : 44-40 isa large caliber rather powerful rifle / The Rifleman uses one too. ) Tragedy follows as Gene Barry is murdered at hiswedding when he kisses the bride , he dies in her arms. Eventually Dean Jagger hits bottom and leaves the action.Barry Sullivan will dispatch the brother bad guy , and he and Barb ride off towards California.I am a searcher for old movie gems , but let me say that I don't find Gone with the Wind to be a movie of any realimportance ; indeed I have never managed to watch the whole thing ; frankly Scarlett your movie is a big stupidspectacle. Forty Guns seems to be an attempt to make a western that echos Gone with the Wind. It doesn't make it.I am a big fan of Barbara Stanwyck ; she took on many different roles in her career , from comedy to drama , andshe does an outstanding job , but she can't save this one . Recommended only for fans of the western genre and/orfans of the various actors involved.
