5.0 out of 5 stars Yet, another 5 star review...what more needs to be said?
Benjamin Britten must have had a deep feeling and understanding for liturgical music. The King's College Choir of Cambridge does an excellent job in bringing forth every layer of beauty that the music has to offer. While the Christmas carols "Ceremony of Carols" are, of course, the highlight, do not discard the rest. The "Missa Brevis" is especially lovely and moving.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording
Even though the recording was made 40 years ago, the performance and audio quality are stunning. I bought the CD as I didn't want a lesser quality MP3 recording of music as beautiful as this. David Willcocks gets it right!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great music - lacking a program booklet
The music is wonderful. The digital remastering is excellent. But, unlike other albums I download, this one did not have a program booklet. Had the same issue with a download of Vierne Symphonies a couple years back - also from Bolo. Possibly this is just the way Bolo does things. More recently most of my downloads come from Naxos which always provides a program booklet.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful recording
I heard this recording over 20 years ago, and it still sounds as wonderful as I remembered it. Very satisfied.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic work. This was a replacement CD since my last one was scratched and skipped
Arrive in pristine order. Very easy to use. Just insurr and play. Wonderful music to listen to, anytime. Very glad I found a copy.Bill

Britten composed an "angelic" piece of music, and the Cambridge Choir of King's College has produced a version which is heavnely

TWO KING'S COLLEGE CONDUCTORS PERFORM BRITTEN: Willcocks 1972 & Ledger 1974."A Ceremony of Carols" for treble voices and harp consists of nine carols of medieval origin preceded by a Processional ending with a Recessional. The performance of this work by Willcocks is totally excellent; the diction is clear and precise while the quality of the boy sopranos is crystalline. Unlike the later 1990 Cleobury recording in which the vocal quality was not 'up to par' and the diction somewhat 'muddy'. In addition, Cleobury's soprano soloist was ill-chosen for his tone was breathy to the point of annoyance."Hymn to St. Cecilia" very well might have been composed by Britten because he was born on St. Cecilia's day, so he wanted to write something for himself. Written in 1942, it is a setting of a W.H. Auden poem, the music reflecting the restrained intensity of the words. Quite an interesting work and well produced by Willcocks."Rejoice in the Lamb"(Festival Cantata) sets excerpts from an extended poem by the 18th century poet, Christopher Smart. Britten sets ten short sections, all dedicated to the glory of God. The cantata is scored for four soloists, four-part chorus, organ and (in this version) percussion. Here again Ledger's choir far surpasses Cleobury's 1990 disc."Te Deum & Jubilate Deo in C". The 'Te Deum' dates from 1935 and is written for treble solo, four-part choir and organ. the 'Jubilate', although composed much later, in 1961, is also in C, and forms a convenient comparison work. In these two compositions Britten eschews any banal display of contrapuntal writing so characteristic a trademark of countless shorter settings. Ledger's choir performed these wonderfully well, and I loved both of them!"Missa Brevis in D" for boys'voices and organ is a direct descendent of "A Ceremony....", in that the composer was moved to write it after he heard a performance in 1958 in Westminster Cathedral. Here again the voices are scored in three parts, but with organ rather than harp. It was well performed by Willcocks, but I didn't like it; maybe you will.I was most happy to see this reissue of this particular King's College performance.
alles schick.
schöne aufnahmen, gibt einen schönen überblick über die chorwerk von benjamin britten. die ceremony of carols sind und bleiben das lieblingswerk.
Ceremony of Carols is fab
Britten wrote these pieces for boys voices and it matters here. The purity, lack of vibrato and sense of fragility that one gets from listening to the Ceremony of Carols is essential to the piece. I’ve tried listening to ladies voices but it doesn’t work so well. This recording by King’s College choir may be quite old but the clarity of recording is good. It’s only available second hand now, sadly.
Britton A Ceremony of Carols.
Not so well known Christmas carols on this recording by B Britton, but I have been looking for a CD of it for many years, I had it on a music cassette, which was actually a recording from Classic FM, the quality of the cassette was not really good, but the sound quality of the CD by the King's College Choir Cambridge is EXCELLENT which I listened to during the Christmas season, (I through the cassette version into the bin). The other works on the CD are also very good, however, they are not Christmas music, I can listen to them any time of the year, overall, a excellent recording.
Four Stars
Love this and a wonderful festive CD.
Wonderful singing.
This is the very best recording of Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" - for its sensitivity, clear enunciation, superlative young tenors, and conducting. I much prefer it to the recording by the choir of Westminster Cathedral (1986). The most beautiful Christmas music ever written!
