Description:

Young Gunz: Young Chris, Neef (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Jay Z, Cam'Ron, Chingy, Beanie Sigel, Denim, Juelz Santana, Sparks, Freeway. Producers include: Bink, Chad Hamilton, Just Blaze, Scott Storch, Ruggedness. Young Gunz: Young Chris, Neef (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Jay Z, Cam'Ron, Chingy, Beanie Sigel, Denim, Juelz Santana, Sparks, Freeway. Producers include: Bink, Spunk Digga, Chad Hamilton, Ryan Press, Just Blaze. Recorded at Sony, Baseline, Quad, New York, New York; Homebase, The Studio, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Young Chris and Neef, the Philadelphia duo who make up Young Gunz, are just emerging from their teens, yet the pair betray hip-hop wisdom far beyond their years on their highly anticipated debut, TOUGH LUV. The two were showcased as part of Beanie Sigel's State Property crew, and managed to stand out in a talented crowd, scoring a most-deserved hit from the excellent STATE PROPERTY VOL. 2 with the playful "Can't Stop, Won't Stop." TOUGH LUV contains a fun, funky remix of that song (featuring Chingy), along with 16 other lyrically skilled tracks of varying styles and shades. The tag Young Gunz, while seemingly reflecting the violent world in which the duo grew up, is actually a reference to basketball, a fact revealed in both their lyrics and rhyming style. While the words are aggressive in a fun-loving, freewheeling manner, their rhymes are passed off from one to another in easy and inviting flows. After opening with a few modern R&B-infused anthems, Young Gunz kick back into a pitch-perfect old-school throwback on the beat-box propelled "Friday Night," before flawlessly sampling fellow Philly natives Hall & Oates on "$$$ Girlz." When label icon Jay-Z drops by on the commanding "Never Take Me Alive," the die is cast, and Young Gunz have scored an impressive debut.

Note to the Young Gunz: before you declare yourselves the future of the Roc you might want to release a debut album that actually supports such a wildly boastful claim. Tough Luv is not that album. Sure, Tough Luv offers up adequate hip-hop. Songs like the R&B-inflected "Grown Man" and "$$$ Girlz," with its retro-'80s, sample and start-and-stop tempo changes, will easily satisfy young rap fans and the legions of Roc-A-Fella devotees. And there is, of course, a nice little cameo on "Never Take Me Alive." (Despite the next wave's best intentions, the Roc will never be the same without Jigga.) The Gunz may have a decent delivery, but the beats and lyrics leave something to be desired. We already know what the past looks like. If you truly are the future you've got to give us something new. --Rebecca Levine

Young Chris and Neef, better known as Young Gunz, have made small appearances on numerous Roc-A-Fella recordings over the past few years. But what really got them some shine was last year's runaway hit "Can't Stop, Won't Stop" (although it still didn't get anyone to pick up that second State Property album). And now the fellas brought us their official debut, Tough Luv. Let's see how they did, shall we?I can't exactly say that I "luv" this album. Because although Chris and Neef scored that hit last year, they don't really have what it takes to carry a whole album (especially an album that's 73 minutes long). Songs like "No Better Love" and "Future of the Roc" are decent and all, but the rhymes don't make the duo stand out in the crowd or anything. And there are a few missteps on here, too. The bonus track "Problemz" is full of, well, problems ("If you cheatin' on your man tonight, holla (Oo-ooh! Oo-ooh!)"), and "Friday Night" is one of those songs that you'll dance to in the club, but you really couldn't find yourself bumpin' in your ride. And then there's the poor-use-of-a-sample-in-the-chorus example: "$$$ (rich) Girlz" uses Hall and Oates' "Rich Girl", but whoever sampled it needs to clean off their LP because the sample has skips in it. (But the song features Juelz Santana, so it wasn't that interesting to begin with.)Another problem has to do with Young Chris' rap style. Before I listened to this album, I wasn't quite sure if I could distinguish between the two rappers, but then I discovered that Chris has the lower voice...or so I thought. Sometimes he does, but other times we sounds exactly like Neef, and I'm like, "Man, who's rapping?" Speaking of that, Beanie Sigel's performance on "Roc U" was kind of hard to swallow because he sounds completely different (can we assume that's what prison did to him?).If you're updating your Roc-A-Fella collection, then add this album to it. Otherwise, just listen to your friend's copy.Anthony Rupert

The Young Gunz were a well anticipated duo of mine well before they even spoke of dropping a CD. Their most attractive quality for myself, was the fact that they went head-up with another relatively known rap squad from North Philly: Major Figgaz. I was extremely impressed with their chosen approach to the battle, undermining Major Figgaz' insistent embarrassment punchlines with witty story/logical delivery...ultimately outlasting the on-slaught of Major Figgaz, moving on to their own business--making CDs. All the while, the Young Gunz continued to make subliminal (and at other times not so) tracks aimed at their "phoes". The most invigorating facet of the group is Young Chris's voice and delivery...it is most ear-pleasing for myself.Which brings me to the album...Sadly, I feel as though the album would have been better served if Neef approached it with more emotion--hunger, if you will. I do not feel the passion nor dedication from him as much as I do from Young Chris. This is apparent throughout much of the last three hundred and sixty-five days with the release of Chain Gang Vol 2 and Young C's track "94 Bars"...that fellow is truly enjoyable. I think that Neef--although he admits to providing the lighthouse for Chris as far as rapping goes--needs to step up his game and do justice with Chris. I often find myself awaiting Neef's closure so that I can hear Chris or another featuring artist, like Freeway on "Parade", perform with their passion...displaying their pride.I hope that whatever is ailing Neef, he gets over it, because he could single-handedly bring the Young Gunz down...Chris, I am sure, will provide a reluctantly falling foudation though. The CD is worth buying, if for Chris alone. He is truly a young protege of Jay-Z, whom, although I prefer Nas over him, is extremely entertaining and has founded the reference of lyrical delivery and confidence.Enjoy. The Young Gunz "Tough Luv" is more like a "Hard Luv" but it's still "Luv"...Be sure to check out track number eleven...Chris is rhyming on beat in the beginning no matter what you think...although if anyone can help me with this I would gladly appreciate it:What does he mean, "Your digits ain't rising fam; it's like you're lactose tolerant...?"I've tried to get the underlying meaning of that for a small while now. Does the insertion of milk prohibit baked goods from rising?:-)Gen
