Who's the Boss? was a standard sitcom--turned on its head. Sure, there was a mom, a dad, two cute kids, a house in the suburbs... and a live studio audience. But Angela Bower (Judith Light) was a single advertising exec with a son (Danny Pintauro) and Tony Micelli (Tony Danza) was a widowed ex-ballplayer with a daughter (future Charmed star Alyssa Milano). The Connecticut mansion belonged to Angela (along with the big '80s hair and shoulder pads) and Tony wasn't her boyfriend, but rather her housekeeper. Then there was her mother, Mona (the incomparable Katherine Helmond). The sexed-up, slightly cracked grandmother is a primetime staple, but in the former Soap matriarch's hands, the character was a cut above (and usually got the best lines). As Angela complains to her in the pilot, "You've sent me a man for a housekeeper!" "Oh, don't be sexist," Mona replies. "A man can do meaningless, unproductive work just as well as a woman."
"Meaningless, unproductive work" is what Tony does for the Bowers--and does well--but he and Samantha (Milano) also become part of the family. Angela and Tony go on a number of dates with other people, but there's an obvious sexual tension between them. The show would continue to exploit that tension for eight seasons to great success (even inspiring a British version called The Upper Hand, with Honor Blackman as the "Mona" character). Helmond, meanwhile, would garner an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her efforts. Highlights include "Mona Gets Pinned," in which Mona takes up with a younger man, and "Angela's Ex, Part I," in which Angela reconciles with her estranged husband--who proceeds to fire Tony. Guest stars include Betty White (Mary Tyler Moore) in "Eye on Angela" and Danza's Taxi co-star Jeff Conoway in "First Kiss." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best "Feel Good" sitcoms EVER... We Need ALL 8 seasons!
Who's the Boss? has it all. This ensemble cast and writers created a show that is timeless and feels so true to what life was and should be. It teaches kindness, life lessons and doing the right thing even when it's difficult, all with comedy. I fell in love with this show when I was young and whenever life becomes a bit too much, this show lifts one's spirits and never fails to make one laugh or smile. -- We all need this in life no matter one's age. :)I know this show airs on Hulu, but I needed to purchase a physical copy of this gem of a show should it ever disappear. It's only one season, but something is better than nothing. -- SONY, Bolo or ANYONE: PLEASE acquire the rights and release the ENTIRE SERIES on DVD. There is an entire massive generation waiting to purchase the complete 8 season DVD series for themselves and purchase another set as a gift for their kids and grandchildren. That's how important this series is to so many of us who cherish a time when people exemplified kindness, love and treating people with respect. Please make this happen. Thank you.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Brand New Life Around the Bend.
I have always loved Who's the Boss, and I love Tony Danza no matter what lots of other people say. It's corny, hokey, very 80s, and everything I miss about TV sitcoms to this day. Tony Micelli is my idea of a real man--ALL man, sports loving and rough around the edges, yet a downhome romantic who isn't afraid to take on nontraditional roles like being the housemaid to a single mother. It's yuppie meets the Rockie of the baseball world to some extent, which leaves the show plenty of open doors for good comic plots.Alyssa Milano is cute and funny as Tonys semi-sassy daughter Sam, but Danny Pintauro as Angela Bower's son Johnathan is just a bit stiff and annoying at times. I love the difference between Judith Light's proper Angela and her mother, the wild swinger Mona played with great natural humor by the always likeable Catherine Helmond. Without her presence, the show wouldn't work quite as well. The chemistry between Tony and Angela is also as appealing as that of Fran and Max on The Nanny, so you may notice many similarities in the two shows, except the writing of the Nanny is sharper. My favorite episode? By far, Angela's First Fight. I laughed so hard, never having seen it before, that I watched it over a few times. I also love the theme song which was co-written by smooth jazz great Larry Carlton. If you love corny sitcoms that bring back great memories without apologizing for it, get the first season of Who's the Boss. Now, as another reviewer said, where's season two, because I want them all!
5.0 out of 5 stars Release the other seasons please
I was 14 when this show premiered in 1984 and watched it here and there when it was on tv, but never paid much attention to it as back then sappy "family" sitcoms weren't my thing being a hip, cool teen and all. But now that i'm middle aged and horrified and disgusted at the garbage that passes for entertainment on tv today, I cut my cable cord and am revisiting all those wonderful sitcoms of a less crude era."Who's the Boss" is one of those gems and it's an entertaining and wholesome family show with lots of heart. The middle aged me can finally appreciate what I didn't during it's original run. Everything about this show, from the characters, down to the setting of the country colonial they live in is just warm and comforting. It's disappointing that only the first season is released on dvd to enjoy. I am halfway finished with this set and have enjoyed every episode so far and really want to see the following 7 seasons now. So if the studio somehow reads this review, please consider a release for us who want it! I for one, promise to buy the entire series!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Love This Show
I grew up watching Who's the Boss and this DVD has brought back wonderful memories. This is a great show for the whole family. It's very clean and there is no worry about negative behavior, dialog or situations that you may not want your children to see. It's full of love and positivity. These are some things missing from what children are exposed to on TV and online today. I wish they would release the rest of the series on dvd.
5.0 out of 5 stars Who’s the boss
This show brings me back to a time when television shows were well produced, and intensely memorable! And the opening theme (‘A Brand New Life’) is so soothing that it makes me want to crack open a bottle of Pinot Noir and enjoy the show. They don’t make shows like that anymore.Yes, please release the rest of the seasons!!!
4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it too
I remember watching these as a kid and now I've just watched them with my 10 year old son. He laughed constantly and couldn't wait to watch the next episode. I enjoyed it too, but it did open up a lot of conversations about sex. Thankfully that was a topic my son and I have already covered. There was a lot of sexual tension in every episode. The pilot was about Angela sleeping with her boss to get a promotion. I'm just hoping that most of it went over my son's head like I'm sure it did when I was a kid.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great show!
This show is so much fun! I used to watch this years ago, and the music always makes me calm and happy. The show, themes, clothing and decor, all take me back in time, like a time capsule, and it's a feel-good wholesome-ish show with an edge. Not sure I'd want to watch it in mixed company, due to the numerous mentions and innuendos about sex, but it's not too racy. They need to release the complete set!

Thanks for all the wonderful memories, and for the everlasting enjoyment with shows like these. Cannot comment if that will be the case as to longevity yet. Just got it. No problems or disappointments "thus far" with the quality.
