The Diary of Anne Frank

Description:

A diary discovered in the attic of an Amsterdam factory reveals the plight of a jewish refugee family that lived there in hiding for two years during the Nazi occupation.

Amazon.com

George Stevens (Giant) directed this 1959 film adaptation of the hit play based on the writings of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl from Amsterdam who hid in an attic with her family and others during the Nazi occupation. As Anne, Millie Perkins is something of a milky eyed enigma and--in retrospect--too old for the part; but she is surrounded by an outstanding cast, including Joseph Schildkraut as Anne's patient father, Ed Wynn as a cranky dentist who moves into Anne's "room," and Shelley Winters as the loud Mrs. Van Daan. Stevens turns the many overlapping dramas of the caged characters into the foundation of Anne's growth as a young woman, ready for life and love just at the moment the dream comes to an end. Beautifully shot by cinematographer William C. Mellor, and written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett from their stage production. --Tom Keogh

A deeply moving and powerful book. Anne Frank’s words are timeless and offer a heartfelt perspective on hope, courage, and humanity during difficult times. A must-read classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite movies, period

This is one of my favorite movies, period. I know a lot of people view this and say, 'Things were much more dire than what they show in this movie,' and they're correct. Since this movie was released, we've seen a movie such as Schindler's List come out and it paints a more realistic portrait of what happened to the Jewish community during the Holocaust. However, at the time The Diary of Anne Frank came out, people would not have been able to handle the "realistic" portrayal of Anne and her family and friends. The Diary of Anne Frank is a movie that should not be ignored. As a young person when I first saw this movie, I had the opportunity to read The Diary of Anne Frank in school. Between reading it and seeing the movie, I felt the immense sorrow and pain this particular group of people had to endure at a very horrific time in the history of mankind. To stay in hiding 24 hours a day; limited resources; seeing the same faces day-after-day; wondering about your future, daydreaming of a better time, or if you'd come out alive.I suggest you take time to read the book. [NOTE: Not the book that has updated information in it. I'm appalled that the main focus of the company who re-released it points out that Anne 'explores her sexuality.' No-no!!! Read the classic and ignore the newest version.] Then, try to see this movie. The Diary of Anne Frank is safe for children ages 11 and up. In fact, this would be a good introduction for a younger audience about the German occupation and Nazi Germany. Also of note: after seeing Anne Frank, I recommend seeing The Hiding Place (also the book of the same name) about the story of Corrie ten Boom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Watch!

I saw this movie years ago when I was younger. I remembered watching it but it not having that great of an impact on me. We just returned from a trip to Amsterdam and we visited the Anne Frank House. An unbelievably moving 2 hours of my life. Shelley Winters' Academy Award was on display. When we returned I wanted to watch the movie again to see the docu-drama of what happened in that fateful house. It was difficult to watch. NOT that it was a bad movie, or had poor acting. Just the opposite. It is an outstanding movie! It is just so hard to believe that 70 years ago there was truly a mad man that led a country into such hatred for real human beings to try and make himself the most powerful man in the world. It was hard to believe that I was JUST in the house where this movie was "filmed." It was a REAL place with REAL people living in hiding for THREE YEARS! Hopefully see what really happened just a few short years ago, to human beings by human beings, and we NEVER let history repeat itself for ANY PEOPLE! A MUST SEE!

I watched this as a kid with my parents. THIS IS A TRUE STORY of the MOST FAMOUS JEW put to death by Hitler in WWII. The movie shows the "blossoming" of a pre-teen girl into a 16 yr old young woman. Millie Perkins and the rest of the cast brought this to life and meaning that we all can understand. The story ends as her family is found and taken to the prison camps, so you don't see that part of history. The end is a "verbal review" of what happened during that time by Mr. Frank as he discovers her "diary" back in the loft where the families existed for 3 years before being found by Nazis.Heart wrenching but endearing. I have watched this over and over. Those people wishing to "delete" the holacaust from history should watch this movie and actually READ the diary!

This is an exceptional Blu-ray. Picture and sound quality are wonderful, and there are enough extras to make any film fan happy. Making of the film, pieces about the stars (Millie Perkins and Diane Baker are interviewed, as is Shelly Winters in an older interview), and George Stevens, Jr. provides lots of insight into his father (Jr. worked on the film, too). There is also color footage of Stevens, Sr. during WWII and in the death camps. There is also a commentary track by Stevens, Jr., and Millie Perkins.Highly recommended!

The Fox Studio Classic DVD release of THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK was outstanding and featured both a commentary track and excellent extras. So is the Blu-ray worth the upgrade? YES! The transfer of the film is beautifully done and all of the extras from the DVD are still here, but the additonal NEW material is worth the price of upgrading all by themselves. The section featuring Millie Perkins and Diane Baker sharing how they came to be picked for the film and their experiences working with director George Stevens moved me to tears. The Stevens World War II footage that he shot in 16mm Kodachrome has much more material then we have ever seen before. Steven's Jr. experiences on the film are very interesting and the section in which he shares letters that his dad sent and received are touching. Alfred Newman's composer sons (David and Thomas)discuss their dad's work on his magnificent score for the film. If you are interested in classic films and/or Anne Frank then this Blu-ray edition will be treasured addition to your libray. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

DVD….Diary Of Anne Frank……

B.H. · February 12, 2024

…..the 1959 version…..purchased having read reviews stating excellent depiction, script, cinematography, actors taking part, and especially actor taking the part of Anne Frank. The narration by the actor reading from Anne Frank’s journal diary reveals the insights of a young girl gradually maturing whilst in hiding from the Nazi soldiers, her teenage feelings and conflicts with others, especially her mother.Having a rapport with her patient wise father, endevouring to encourage his oftentimes rebellious daughter to consider kindly towards her very frightened anxious mother.Having to share her bedroom with more than middle aged local Dentist, competing for space with him for writing. The mores of other neighbour guests, especially the mother of young teenage boy, Pieter, who was obviously embarrassed by his mother’s attitudes and chattering.Anne, who develops a teenage crush on Pieter, who then later reciprocates.Ane has great respect for thie helpers, bring food and News from “the outside”, keen to hear about “normal life outside”The real tension and anxieties, of being caught, keeping the strict self imposed rules of keeping quiet, the fright of hearing people inside the building, burglars. No use of the toilet and flushing during working daylight hours, the actual unblocking of the one toilet literally by hand, her father doing the worst job imaginable. The longing for fresh air, going outside for walks, a self imposed prison. The generosity of Mr Frank, accepting other people joining them for protection and safety, his kind and logical persuasions of his own family and the other “guests”.Than the ultimate betrayal.Found, arrested, and the separating of all their ways, the different outcomes for all, Mr Frank the only survivor. His grief, and initially reticent about any publication of his daughter’s diary journal. This included in documentaries over the years.Having watched two film depictions of Anne Frank’s Diary, both are worth watching and learning from.Anne’s final words, paraphrased by me, “ I believe that people deep down are good at heart”.This film, 1959, very moving, creates empathy in the viewer, is educational and thought provoking. As an adult, put yourself in Anne’s shoes, and in the shoes of all the people involved at the time.Being a Jew, the one crime the Frank family and their guests had ever committed.Breaking the Nazi laws of Jews in hiding from the Nazi imposed laws.

What more can be added to all the words written about Anne Frank, the diary, the books, films, television series, documentaries.... Not a lot. A wonderful film of a truly heartbreaking story, beautifully acted, and so evocative of the time and place. The film really captures the clautrophobic environment of the attic, something you really appreciate after you've visited the house, and captures the hopes & dreams of Anne,to become a famous writer, dreams that were never to be fulfilled in her lifetime, but in death, gave her a fame that will live forever.
