Description:
When a freak accident wipes out an entire royal family, an exhaustive search reveals a distant relation: Ralph Jones (Goodman), a good-natured, down-to-earth Las Vegas entertainer. Immediately, the rude and crude Ralph is given a crash course in royal manners by his new private secretary, the very proper Lord Willingham (Peter O'Toole). But while Ralph's uncouth behavior delights the public, it fuels a fiendish plot by the evil Lord Graves (John Hurt), who's out to oust the new ruler. Now, it's up to this lowborn lounge singer to redeem himself in a manner befitting a king in this warm-hearted comedy romp.

It was a modest box office success grossing $52,487,045 against a production budget of 25 million. The basic premise is that John Goodman's character Ralph Hampton Gainsworth Jones, who is a Las Vegas lounge singer recently fired from his job, unwittingly becomes the king of England after the entire royal family is electrocuted in a freak accident during a photo shoot. While not a great or original film by any means, it is a lot of fun particularly for fans of John Goodman. The supporting cast includes Peter O'Toole, John Hurt, Camille Coduri and Richard Griffiths.Mill Creek Entertainment brings "King Ralph" to blu-ray as part of their retro VHS slipcover collection.The 96 minute film is presented on a single layer disc in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio utilizing the AVC codec at a solid bit rate often hovering in the upper 20's and low 30's. Universal Studios provided Mill Creek Entertainment the HD master for this release which while obviously being an older one, still looks decent overall. Detail is average while the colors, while not vibrant at any point, look good & not washed out at all. I did not own this film previously on DVD to compare, but for a budget $9.99 release as of the time of this review, it does the job.Audio is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 2 channel sound. Overall I thought everything sounded clear with dialogue being blended well with the musical score. English subtitles are included for the hearing impaired.No extras are included on this release, not even a trailer."King Ralph" is not original in any way and the plot is easy to predict at every turn. It is funny in my opinion and John Goodman fans will find a lot to like here. The movie can still make me laugh over 30 years later and it is nice to finally have it on blu-ray. It is an amiable comedy overall and fans should not hesitate picking it up at such a bargain price.

This movie with John Goodman and Peter O’Toole is lost in the knot distant past. We seen it three times and passed it to friends. It’s simply a showstopper. Speaking of stopping the show you don’t stop the video when you get to the end. You have to go through all the credits to see the funniest thing of all Once in Buckingham Palace… Always somewhere nice.

Good Fun With a Stellar Cast
This film is a great bit of silly fun for the entire family. The entire British royal family is wiped out in a freak accident and the next heir to the throne appears to be a rather less than mediocre American singer/entertainer played by John Goodman. He is brash and unsophisticated, and upon his arrival lin England it falls to Cedric Willingham (Peter O'Toole), a secretary at the royal court, to prepare him for his royal duties. Along the way, King Ralph falls in love with a working class girl with a heart of gold.The cast of the film is quite stellar. John Goodman sticks out like a sore thumb among the distinguished British actors surrounding him. But then, that's the whole point of the film. Peter O'Toole is quite wonderful as the very British, very aristocratic courtier, as is John Hurt as the villain of the piece and a rival for the throne. Richard Griffith, Leslie Philips and James Villiers appear in supporting roles as members of the royal household and the British government, and Julian Glover and Judy Parfitt are the king and queen of Finland on a state visit, with Joely Richardsen putting in a highly enjoyable performance as their husky and haughty and utterly unromantic princess daughter, come to be betrothed to the new British king.Highly recommended if you're looking for light entertainment with a feel good factor. The performances are very good throughout, with none of the actors taking themselves too seriously in a film that never set out to be more than a family friendly comedy.
