5.0 out of 5 stars Canterbury Classic
Caravan was a popular band when I was at high school in England in the early 1970s. This record brings back happy memories. It is a combination of folk, jazz and rock. It also has distinctive Canterbury style vocals and strange lyrics. Musically, Caravan was a tight band and the music still sounds good. I was raised not far from Canterbury so my school friends and I had an affinity for this type of English eccentricity and whimsy. This was Caravan's third album and is usually viewed by rock critics as their best. Mojo said that In the Land of Grey and Pink was "the quintessential Canterbury album." It is now generally regarded as a prog rock classic. In 2015, Rolling Stone listed the album as No. 34 on their list of 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time.Caravan was formed in Canterbury in 1968 by Pye Hastings (guitar/ vocals), Dave Sinclair (keyboards), Richard Sinclair (bass/vocals) and Richard Coughlan (drums). The album was released in 1971. It was critically well received but was not a chart success, which led to frustration within the band. Nevertheless, it has remained in print and sold steadily over the years. According to AllMusic reviewer Dave Thompson, the album is "one of the most beloved, and eccentric prog albums of them all" and "probably Caravan's finest hour".Dave Sinclair decided to leave soon afterwards and join Robert Wyatt in Matching Mole. Dave had contributed a 22-minute long suite of songs and instrumentals, to the album entitled “Nine Feet Underground.” an allusion to the basement flat in Canterbury where it was composed. Dave was to return to the band on several occasions over the years. HIs cousin, Richard Sinclair, wrote and sang the title track, "Golf Girl" and the epic "Winter Wine." Richard left Caravan in 1972 to form Hatfield and the North. He too also returned to Caravan and was also a member of Camel. There are five bonus tracks, included are three songs which did not make the original album and two alternative versions.
5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
Here is one fantastic album from 1971 by Caravan. It is a 3 disc set. The music on this set is a mixture of psychedelic, classical, jazz and rock. This band hails from Canterbury in the UK and have an almost "fairy tale" type sound. I once had the original vinyl in the 60's and loved it back then. The tune entitled "In the Land of Grey and Pink" is nothing short of fantastic with it's classical overtones. The two singles that appear are "Golf Girl" and "Love to Love You( and Tonight Pigs Will Fly)". This group has a way of being in dark humour in the tunes on their albums and as I mentioned they have a fairy tale way about them in their instrumentals and a sort of folkish style in their vocals, sort of reminiscent of Fairport Convention or Lindisfarne. There is one really jazzy tune called Nine Feet Underground and is also rather lengthy at 22 minutes. I really love this group's music and sound and as they say they are not afraid to admit that they know more than 4 chords. The first disc in this set is the original album plus 3 bonus tracks, the second disc contains album session recordings, BBC Sessions for "Sounds of the Seventies" and John Peel Sessions as well. Disc 3 is a 5.1 surround version of the album and 2 videos from Beat Club TV Session 1971. This truly is an amazing set and should definitely not be overlooked as it is FANTASTIC!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great mix of quality pop and progressive rock
In the Land of Grey and Pink seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. Don't get me wrong, its an excellent album, but its not what you would expect from a progressive rock group. Nine Feet Underground and Winter Wine definitely fall within the latter category and Golf Girl and Love to Love You is definetly catchy pop tunes. The title track falls somewhere inbetween. While I normally prefer progressive music, on this album the pop tunes really shine. Winter Wine is also an excellent song, but, as with many progressive tunes, you find that you like some parts of it more than others. In this case, the first half is far superior to the second. I normally like extended tracks, but Nine Feet Underground doesn't impress me that much. The title track grows on you but I think the surreal lyrics are much more interesting that the tune. Overall, its a good, if flawed album. It has some moments of brilliance and other moments of mediocrity.

Caravan's greatest album. My teenage kids also like it !!
What do you know... this album is already known and loved by my teenage kids and we hear it on long car rides. (The 5 track original album without the 5 bonus tracks)If one day some of them will grow to like Prog Rock like me, it will be largely thanks to this relatively catchy great album. The 2001 remastered edition I bought lately contains 5 more tracks running over 30 minutes. These are my insights regarding this edition:Since I have no high end equipment to play CD's I cant comment on the technical sound quality, but to me it sounds very good. The bonus tracks are nice to have but not essential. They are all previously unreleased, with only the first one (track 6 - I don't know Its Name) being a "true" unreleased track as it appears nowhere else but on this release, and may be considered as a link between this album and Waterloo Lily, where the first 3 minutes have an ITLOGAP sound and the second half a much more Jazzy sound that aptly fits Waterloo Lily.Track 7 (Aristocracy) although labeled as "previously unreleased" is an early version of a track with the same name on Waterloo Lily.Track 8 is an early instrumental version of track 2 (Winter Wine)Track 9 is an early version of track 1 (Golf Girl) with some different nonsensical lyrics (not that the final words are much better - but still a fine song).Track 10 a new mix for part of track 5 (Nine Feet Underground) which I found quite unnecessary. As far as my kids are concerned - the first 5 tracks are more than enough...All in all no serious Prog collection should be left without this album!

Caravan machten mehr als ein hervorragendes Album, um einmal nur die zweite LP ('If I Could Do It All Over Again '') oder die fünfte ('For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night') her zu nehmen, das titellose Debütalbum nicht vergessen. Robert Wyatt, jawohl!) 'Moon In June' heran.
