5.0 out of 5 stars A strange and wonderful little disc!

B.T. · February 11, 2004

Seldom have I ever heard a more eclectic compilation album. I first came to know this disc in the early 90's thanks specifically to the Ken Nordine bit on track 11, and the Suzanne Vega bit on track 4; each of which got a fair amount of air time on "Variables" heard Sunday nights in Salt Lake City. Structurally, the 11-track disc actually contains many more pieces than one might first assume, as each track is usually composed of two or more sub-works, each blending into the next. Sometimes the blends work smoothly, other times they can be jarring. All in all you wouldn't believe this to be Disney unless you already knew some of the songs beforehand. Some of them, like the Tom Waits dwarf march, are almost the antithesis of Disney, which is appreciated. In addition to the Vega and Nordine standouts, I also adore part b of track 1, and track 2. But really, if the pool of your musical taste is wide, and you don't mind surprises, this is a gem of a disc that I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Stay Awake" is a revelation and lots of fun.

I originally bought this album on cassette, all of which I've since dumped. This is probably one of the most divers collections of music. Imagine James Taylor and Tom Waits on the same album...Aaron Neville and Sun Ra! Yet somehow this all works and provides fresh listening to songs we grew up with. The opening medley sets the mood with "Hi Diddle Dee Dee (An Actor's Life for Me)," spoken by Ken Nordine backed by circus asylum music by Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, followed by Natalie Merchang, Michael Stipe, Mark Bingham (music producer and Hal Wilner pal), and The Roaches. The medley closes with the best possible version of "I Wan'na Be like You" by Los Lobos."Heigh Ho" by Tom Waits sounds more like the real seven dwarves might have sounded like as they march off to work. Sinéad O'Connor sings "Someday My Prince Will Come" as if she has come to doubt he ever will. "Baby Mine (Dumbo song)" is sung by Bonnie Raitt makes me wish I were her baby elephant.A medley of "Pink Elephants on Parade/Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" will make you march around the house and act silly....until Harry Nilsson's funky "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah." The medley of "Feed The Birds/Whistle While You Work/I'm Wishing" by the unlikely combination of Garth Hudson, NRBQ, Betty Carter, and The Replacements really works, from the slow harmonica-drenched beginning and the bluesy "Cruella de Vil" to Bill Frisell's and Wayne Horvitz's version of "Dumbo and Timothy."The whole affair closes by coming full circle in a sense, with "Pinocchio Medley. "Desolation Theme" is spoken by Ken Nordine and backed by spacy music by Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, followed by Ringo Starr singing an sincere rendition of "When You Wish upon a Star."By the way, another great album of Disney music is "O Mickey, Where Art Thou."

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, unusual way to get your Disney nostalgia fix

K.A.B. · October 5, 2023

I ordered this as a cassette tape years ago, but there aren't a lot of cassette tape players nowadays. Various modern-day performers reinterpret old songs from your (older) favorite Disney movies. Bonnie Raitt does a sweet interpretation of "Baby Mine" from the cartoon "Dumbo." And my favorite is Tom Waits doing the creepiest version of "High Ho, High Ho" that I've ever heard. Sinead O'Connor does a sad, wistful a capella take on "Some Day My Prince Will Come." Nothing from the most recent Disney flicks, but it's worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing CD but the Wrong MP3s!

C.R. · May 3, 2013

I had this album when it first came out and then lost it somewhere between moving from my bachelor pad to my marriage house. Anyway, the versions of these songs are simply amazing. My favorite has to be Tom Waits singing "Heigh Ho." Finally, this song sounds like miners singing as they go undergound. However, BE AWARE! The MP3 associated with this album (and, thus, the AutoRip version) is *NOT* the album STAY AWAKE. It is a compilation called "50's Rock 'N' Roll - Rock 'N' Roll Is Here To Stay." (Hover your mouse over the MP3 link to see what I mean.) If you're getting this in the hopes of having the MP3 version, note that Bolo has yet to fix this. I have not been given a time frame to expect a fix and was told I could return the CD. AS IF!

We first bought this CD in 1985 for our kids. Once we heard it, wow, this is not to be wasted on the young. Not that the young won't like what they hear, but the depth of the interpretation of these songs will blow you away. This album is the aural equivalent of the best of Disney's animation.Los Lobos joyfully bouncing along with "I Wan'na Be Like You", Sun Ra stampeding through in "Pink Elephants on Parade", jazz great Betty Carter colors outside of the lines with a beautiful take on "I'm Wishing". Bonnie Raitt made my wife cry with her "Baby MIne". Garth Hudson, last of the Band, takes you into the quietest sanctuary with his take on "Feed the Birds". Sinead O'Connor, Natalie Merchant, Michael Stipe, Suzanne Vega, James Taylor, Harry Nilsson and lots more are featured throughout the disc. And it's all wrapped up, with a beautiful bow, by the one and only Ringo, singing "When You wish Upon a Star". Now that my kids have their own kids, we bought 5 more copies of this rare and out of print CD to share with their own broods.

Music nut here. I had this on cassette many years ago and needed it again! So many creative interpretations of Disney tunes from wide variety of artists across genres. Great for adults to share with their kids: Tom Waits, Sun Ra, Yma Sumac, Bill Frisell, etc.

Children and parents always love it.

cd con musiche Disney reinterpretate

M. · January 19, 2013
