The fact that Alive! is arguably Kiss's best album highlights the fact that they are performers first, musicians second. There's nothing wrong with that, especially when a live album sounds this good. Stuffed to bursting with classic tracks, Alive!, originally released in 1975, is a classic metal album. "Deuce," "Strutter," "Hotter than Hell," "Black Diamond," "100,000 Years," and especially "Rock and Roll All Nite" (probably the most well-known party song in existence)--they're all here, and wonder of wonders, they still sound fresh after all these years. The success of Kiss's 1996 tour shows that they've still got plenty of fans; Alive! is one album no Kiss fan should be without. --Genevieve Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars Still great 40+ years later
I bought this album for my son’s 54th birthday, along with a stereo turntable to play it on, which I also purchased from Bolo. My son Tony bought this Kiss album back in the 1970s using money he had saved. His dad and I had divorced, and his dad had remarried. When the new wife saw my son’s Kiss album, she immediately forced him to stomp on the record and throw away the pieces. She said that Kiss was a satanic group (which of course has never been true), and she would not allow the album in her house.I had never known about this until my son told me about it a few weeks ago. It broke my heart, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So, I decided to replace that album, even though it had been over 40 years since the original one was destroyed. I’m so glad that I did! Tonight I gave Tony the Kiss album and a turntable to play it. I don’t think I could have chosen a better gift. Tony was so happy! Here’s a photo I took tonight soon after I gave it to him.You know, it’s never too late to, at least partially, make up for a hurt or injustice suffered by someone you love and care about.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hard driving rock of 1975!!!
On an evening in the spring of 1977 my dad drove me to the Menlo Park mall in New Jersey. It was the first time I was ever in a real record store. It was dark and mysterious and my dad was going to buy me a KISS album - my first real album (not a 45rpm). I picked out KISS Alive! Double album that opened up, big booklet, so many songs. I was blown away. I was allowed to listen to a few songs on the turntable in the living before bedtime. My dad told me no one would be listening to the band in 10 years because they were just a fad. Winter came quick and I shovelled snow around my neighborhood to make money so I could buy KISS records. I haven’t heard this record in over 30 years and now I’m happy to have it on CD. This stuff is pure early 70’s hard driving rock. Thick, murky, catchy, and fun. If you love this record, check out “All the World’s a Stage” by Rush. It’s their double live album recorded in 1975 (recorded around the same time as Alive!). Both albums capture a perfect 1970’s hard rocking sound and have the same drive and feel.
4.0 out of 5 stars Looking back is scary
Once again people, keep in mind that this is music recorded in the studio and overdubbed onto live audience tracks. ITS NOT LIVE MUSIC!! Even though I think this is a good sounding album (worthy of 4 stars despite the deception), and I do give it a spin every year or so - I wish I would have started listening to different music in my youth. You see, I admit that I was a huge Kiss fan. But given how far I have come in the pursuit of 'real' music and good live music, its almost embarrasing to me that I liked this stuff. And I still like some of it. But I often wonder where I would be musically now if I had started off with say the Grateful Dead, Caravan, Camel, King Crimson, or a host of other artists back in the 70s. I think Kiss stunted my musical growth for a number of years now looking back. Real bands don't record in the studio then release music under the guise of a live album. When I found this out it only solidified the fact that I was in the wrong fandome way back. But hey, what's a 12 year old know.
Love this!
