Son House & the Great Delta Blues Singers

Description:

Son's insistent guitar with it's thudding bass and articulate slide would sell his records to blues fans by itself but coupled with his mighty voice, one of the most passionate in the music, it forms a combination that is nothing but sublime. Rediscovered and feted in the 1960s as the greatest surviving Delta blues singer, Son House had made three two-part records for the Paramount label in 1930 that are considered classics of their kind. These are solo performances with the deep-voiced House brilliantly accompanying himself on guitar, using a slide to produce that special Mississippi Delta sound. The supporting cast here lives up to the standard of Son House's playing, and the songs other than those by Son House offer an insight into lesser known individuals of the Mississippi Delta blues style. All have voices rough enough to cause abrasions as they sing about the concerns of Mississippi blacks in the Twenties to a series of accompaniments that form the very sinews of the tradition. From the harmonised field hollers of Joe Calicott to the relative sophistication of the otherwise unknown Jim Thompkins there isn't a track here that isn't prime.

5.0 out of 5 stars The legend of legends

Great vintage delta blues!Being a Son House fan, I have to comment that all of his recordings found on this were superb, albeit marred by the inevitable crackles from deteriorated circa 1930 vinyl. The three tracks that were particularly good to me were "My Black Mama," with its fantastic rhythm and slide ringing throughout. This song was the forerunner to what later became House's signature piece, "Death Letter.""Preachin' the Blues" is incredible, with House expertly weaving his guitar in and out, with that unmistakable field holler bass voice."Walking Blues" is wonderful and features a second guitarist, almost certainly none other than Willie Brown. Both Willie Brown tracks are good, but "Future Blues" is especially good, standing right up next to those from House himself. The other bluesmen found on this CD were very good, but I bought this for Son and Willie most of all, and their songs are truly worth it for a blues fan. This is also - I believe - the CD to get if you want the complete Grafton, Wisconsin Paramount Records sessions. For an even bigger treat (19 tracks!) for a Son House fan, get "The Complete Library of Congress Sessions, 1941-1942," found here:The Complete Library of Congress Sessions, 1941-1942Also, the one record of Son that had not been found turned up only back in 2005.You can find the two songs from it (along with lots of other extreme rarities) here: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

i think son house said it best in walking blues,' the blues are a low down shakin chill, if youve never had them, hope you never will'. yes, it wasnt robert johnson who said it first in his preachin blues(not on cd). luckily houses walking blues is on this cd(it was unissued and lost until 1985). but two songs unissued and lost until 2006 sadly are not on the cd(clarksdale moan and mississippi county farm blues). the cd also contains all 4 songs from garfield akers, 4 songs from blind joe reynolds, and a slide guitar gem from jim thompkins, and more.

This album is raw down and dirty Blues as it started out just folks singing from their hearts about the woes of living life in the south as black folks. I listen to this album several times a week as I study the blues and where it all came from and research some of this artists lives thank God someone had the sense and nerve to record them and document this important part of our American heritage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best recording

B.F. · March 11, 2024

I'm going to deviate from the crowd on this one. The recording isn't that great; that's one thing. But I also think Son House's playing is better on subsequent albums. Compare the version of death letter blues here to what he recorded in the 60's. This one is still of historical interest. But if you just want to enjoy the music of this great bluesman at the top of his game, I think you will like the later recordings more.

This is more of a question than a review. I discovered the Delta Blues over the last few years and can't get enough of it. Of the 30 or so CDs I've purchased I ocasionally get one where the recording is scratchy and the sound quality is less than good. This CD is one of those. I've read the reviews and no one talks about this. The other Son House recordings I have purchased have good quality sound. The question is three fold. First, why is the quality of the sound not mentioned in any of the reviews? Second, how can I know before purchasing future recordings that the sound quality will be good? Last, the cover of the CD I received is not the cover shown. This CD has the above title but also says 1928 ~ 1930 is black and white, and has Son sitting in a chair in front of a microphone. Why the different cover? Looking for help from Long Beach, Mississippi.Jeff

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection with the roots of the great american music

J.B. · April 19, 2002

Son House is certainly the king here. But all the other performers here were also top-notch delta blues performers of the 20's-40's. Son House is leading of this collection with his classic Grafton, Wisconsin 1930 recordings. Incredibly powerful, magic and enduring music that set the stage for things to come. That voice is just stupendous! His slide guitar is a killer too. Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters were avid followers of this man and incorporated some of Mr. House's songs, and way of playing in their music. The first 6 songs is from 3 officially released 78's in 1930. 'Walking blues' was a test recording, that ironically was not recorded for official release, though being one of Son House's theme songs. A great song anyway, and you can hear the inspiration that influenced a lot of blues artists up to this day. Another seminal figure here is Willie Brown. He used to travel around with Charley Patton and Son House in the delta, being a superb accompanist and guitar player. His two only recordings are masterpieces of the genre, powerful and classic stuff with strong lyrics. The other performers on this CD collection are all great performers in their own right. Blind Joe Reynolds was a more engimatic figure of whom little details are known, but his songs are great with fine guitar playing. Ruby Lacy was an influence on Son House and his two songs here are typical of classic delta blues. He became a Reverend some years later. You won't find much better blues than this anywhere.

Kid BaileyはWillie Brownか?

P.C. · September 14, 2019

Make Me A Pallet On The Floor
