About the Author

William Shakespeare began his career as an actor, writer and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’ s Men, later known as King’ s Men, in London. Often regarded as the ‘ Bard of Avon’ he is one of the world’ s pre-eminent dramatists. Most of his known works have been produced between 1589 and 1613. His plays demonstrate the expansiveness of his imagination and the extent of his learning. A Midsummer Night’ s Dream, is one of his most delightful creations. Romeo and Juliet is his most famous romantic tragedy of sexually charged adolescence, love and death. Shakespeare’ s sequence of great comedies continue with Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and Twelfth Night. Until about 1608, he mainly wrote tragedies including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth. Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus— his last major tragedies, contain some of his finest poetry. A true genius, Shakespeare’ s popular characters and plots are studied, performed, reinterpreted and discussed till today.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Written Word Cannot do it Credit

A.J.C. · November 11, 2019

Some plays of Shakespeare are meant to be read. Few patrons of the arts are able to truly enjoy the full four hour production of Hamlet. Moreover, many of the soliloquies are more powerful in the reading and rereading then in listening to them on a distant stage.A Comedy of Errors is not on one of them. It’s not just that it lacks the sublime quality of Hamlet or Lear, it’s that most of the laughs are in the slapstick humor of two sets of identical twins being confused with one another. The humor depends upon the actors displaying increasing frustration and perplexity leading to a spontaneous release of joy when the errors are revealed. The written word cannot do the play the credit it deserves. So while a good edition can help one sort out the major characters and wordplay it doesn’t make for a completely satisfying experience. Recommended with caution.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable dramatization

T.R.F.K.a.K.J. · January 4, 2013

This set of two CDs contains a really great dramatization of Shakespeare's classic play, The Comedy of Errors. Arkangel brought together a battery of great actors (including David Tennant - the 10th Doctor Who), who really brought the story to life. The production is very good with the manhandling of Dromio being accompanied by humorous sound effect.I really did enjoy the play and had no problem following what was happening to whom and why. Yep, I found this to be a very enjoyable dramatization, and I do not hesitate to recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow start, great finish

When performing <The Comedy of Errors> on stage, you obviously need two actors for each set of twins (or you get into bad trouble at the end when they all meet). A recording needs no such casting, and yet the Arkangel set gets roles for two extra men. Fine with me. This recording starts with the long tale of the Father recited to piano music, thereby causing instant confusion as to the time frame of this production. (The "All's Well That Ends Well" has a locomotive pulling into a station!) Also a good deal of the humor is removed from the speech, which is indeed a spoof on the genre. But when we hear a good old fashioned Laurel and Hardy metallic clunk to let us know that one of the Dromios has just gotten a konk on the noggin, we know where we stand. Between the older Harper set [see the review on this page by a Reader from Florida] and this there is little to choose castwise, except the sound on the Penguin tapes is naturally much better. Since both are available, you might almost toss between them. But on its own terms, this is a fine production of a very silly play, the likes of which Shakespeare wisely chose never to repeat.

Entertaining but SimplifiedThe Comedy of Errors is fun and full of classic Shakespearean humor, but this edition felt a little watered down. While the story is accessible and easy to follow, some of the clever wordplay and wit that make Shakespeare memorable are missing. It’s entertaining for a casual read, but it doesn’t capture the full depth of the original play.Good for beginners or younger readers who want to get a sense of Shakespeare’s comedies, but I wouldn’t rely on this version for a detailed study or deeper appreciation of the text.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comedy of errors is not a fun reading experience

A.C. · February 2, 2023

This is the one play by Shakespeare that I can honestly say I did not enjoy reading. I assume it is better on stage though I doubt it. I have not read the complete works but I'm trying to. I may be scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point. I only have the 3 Henry VI plays, Merry wives, (and the two he co-wrote very late in his career, which I might skip because I don't consider them a part of the cannon). I tried Merry wives and quit after an act because it's pretty bad but I made it through comedy of errors, which was not easy at all. It's pretty awful. It's brevity saved me.

Nice Book 👍👍👍
