About the Author
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was born to an upper-class Roman family in A.D. 121 and was later adopted by the future emperor Antoninus Pius, whom he succeeded in 161. His reign was marked by a successful campaign against Parthia, but was overshadowed in later years by plague, an abortive revolt in the eastern provinces, and the deaths of friends and family, including his co-emperor Lucius Verus. A student of philosophy from his earliest youth, he was especially influenced by the first-century Stoic thinker Epictetus. His later reputation rests on his Meditations, written during his later years and never meant for formal publication. He died in 180, while campaigning against the barbarian tribes on Rome’ s northern frontier.

1 STAR qualityIf your looking to read Meditations you definitely should it’s amazing and has stood through time just not with this copy. It’s the cheapest made book I’ve ever had.You see right through the pages of the words on the other side because of how thin the paper is.After just a couple times of picking it up to read the pages start to unbindThen you got gold dust on whatever it touches from the coverIt’s a great read just buy it from someone else
5.0 out of 5 stars A simply made and beautifully decorated book
A good looking book full of good wisdom from a long dead roman emperor. Very similar style and quality of writing to something like the book of proverbs in the king James bible.
5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful addition to my library
Beautifully bound for the price. The content of the book is ageless and should be required reading every 24 months for everyone.
5.0 out of 5 stars Much that was unexpected - not a fan of this translation
Focusing on the ideas and reflections by Marcus Aurelius, this is easily a 5-star book; the translation, however left much to be desired. The book is not at all what I had expected: yes, it is clearly "stoicism", but much gentler and introspective than I imagined - the notion that one go out of their way to be uncomfortable or mortify the flesh is not at all what Marcus Aurelius was concerned with here. Rather, many of his thoughts are related to what we in the 21st century call "being present" or "grounded". Recognizing the temporariness of existence and making an effort to live in and enjoy the moment. To be wary of flattery and to not take oneself too seriously. To "get in the mind" of a long-dead emperor and one who had such an impact on the classical world is another reason I recommend this book beyond its value philosophically.Unfortunate, then, that the translation leaves so much to be desired. (The irony of this, particularly in a book on stoicism, is not lost on me.) I get that the translator was attempting to capture the flavor of the original Latin. But the use of anachronistic language ("thee", "thou", "dost" and "art") got in the way of the narrative flow and I found myself "translating" into modern English in any event. Better to have dispensed with that to begin with.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great presentation for the price!
I'm shocked that a book that looks this nice is so cheap. The cover is great, the gilded edges and inside art is really nice. The only two complaints is that the pages are really thin so you have to be careful turning them and it makes them look a bit messy with the printing on the other side being visible. It's not so messy it makes the book unreadable in any way though. The other is that the barcode on the back is printed on the cloth, not a sticker. It's a little odd and takes away from the otherwise really classy appearance of the book. But again, not so much that it's really problematic.I'm definitely planning to buy others!
5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for a better life.
Every young man in your life needs a copy of this book. This world has run amok because we ourselves have run amok. Our thoughts shape our surroundings and we must care for them.Consider this a primer on how to conduct oneself. On how to focus while paying no mind to that which is not ours to contemplate. It’s about suiting up, showing up, sucking it up, and moving forward because if you consider the time before us and the time behind us there is no measurable difference between a lifespan of three days and one of 100 years.
5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for your own growth and development.
Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations is a timeless, introspective work that brings calm and clarity to a busy world. This hardcover edition is beautifully made and feels like it belongs on a serious bookshelf. The writing reads more like a personal journal than a philosophical treatise, which gives it an intimate, honest tone. Aurelius explores themes like duty, resilience, humility, and mortality with quiet strength. You can read it straight through or open to any page for a brief moment of reflection. It’s especially helpful for anyone facing pressure or making tough decisions. This is a classic that remains relevant, offering steady guidance for anyone who values thoughtful living and purposeful action.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
Received the book on time, but I haven't started reading just yet. Seems like a good read, tho.
Awesome artistic version.
There are so many versions of Meditations. Reviews of which version to get is hard sometimes because the photos were not matching the book I was looking to order. I do own another version that is annotated which I do like to help expand on some of the thoughts but THIS version is what I was looking for. Simple. A bit more artistic. Hardcover. Each page is spread out and the thoughts are spaced out. This is a type of book that one can enjoy in bite sized snippets to ponder and this book showcases that. The pages are thin but it makes it feel artistic. I love the fact this was written nearly 2000 years ago. If you are looking for an artistic version, you too will be happy with this version like I am for a reasonable price.
A nice hardcover.
Apart from the content in this book that I haven't read yet the product in terms of manufacture is the best that I've seen ever, fully justify the cost. If you are looking for it then go for it.
Horrendous paper quality
Absolutely horrendous quality of pages, the appealing book cover and pages style is just a facade of a book poorly printed. I recommend people to get other editions instead.
Gorgeous copy of a wonderful book
Highly recommended.
Love this brand of books.
Another classic book, and a great read, hard to understand some of it but I'm no philosopher. It's a great insight into the mind and some of the history of Marcus Aurelius. With regards to quality it's not the best oit ther but it looks good and gets the job done they are a great budget friendly book.
