Halla Bol

Description:

This is not a story of death. It is a story of life. The luminous life of Safdar Hashmi, extraordinary in all its ordinariness. On New Year's Day in 1989, Jana Natya Manch - Janam - the theatre group Safdar was a part of, and which he led, was attacked while performing a street play on the outskirts of Delhi. He was only thirty-four when he died from injuries sustained during this senseless attack. Beginning with a record of the attack that killed him, this vivid memoir illuminates the life of Safdar Hashmi - artist, comrade, poet, writer, actor, activist, and a man everyone loved. But this is not a book about one man or one tragic incident. Halla Bol shows us, close up, how one man's death and life are intertwined with the stories of many people. For a generation that grew up without knowing Safdar Hashmi, Halla Bol renders his passion, humour and humanism into an intimate portrait. It also gives an understanding of resistance, and the strength to put it into practice. It shows the profound link between ideology and real-life struggle. The ideas that Safdar and his colleagues grappled with during a period of tumult and change in India are harbingers of the society we are today. Halla Bol, the play Janam was performing in Jhandapur at the time of the attack, is included in English translation as an appendix to the book.

The legend of Indian Street Theatrr.

S.B. · July 29, 2021

This book is really a tribute to Safdar Hasmi. He was the legend of "Street Theatre"🎭🎭 This book has three parts. First part is about the horrific incident when Safdar was killed by the goons. Second part and the third part of the book are about his personal life and about his theatre movement. At the end there is the the full play "Halla Bol".In this book, the writer, Sudhanva Despande has done a great job to recollect those beautiful nostalgic moments of Safdar and his dreams. The writer rightly says about Safdar: "Spartacus of the theatre"🎭🎭This great book is a must for theatre enthusiastics.

Fantastic book

Opens like an edge-of-the-seat thriller, and the second and third part give the backstory. Warm, funny, moving, infuriating, exciting, this book is unlike most biographies. It is the story of an era, not just of a person. And – most important – it is deeply inspiring. Great read!

Halla bol an excellent book.

At last a book is available on Safdar Hashmi. Must read for youngsters and old to know the life and last moments of a artist par excellence. Thanks to the author Sudhanva Deshpande for this gem.

A must read...

A vivid and lucid description of a life that inspired a whole generation and continues to do so. Though this is the writer's first book, I found his narration quite impressive.

Must read!
